      I get a perfect pitch using the same method as you, just with a slight difference in how I think.
      I never thought about it as a triangle, I just pitch it so there is an equal stretch from where the pole is to each of the corners.
      I've done it on Zpacks Hexamud Solo and Lanshan 1p tent.
      I also use pretty much the same method for my Zpacks Duplex, just doing it from one long side first, then repat the same steps from the other long side, then the only thing left is to stake out the short side guy lines.

    I did pitch it another time since you mentioned that stuff to me a few weeks ago, and it worked out pretty well. Besides staking out the back corners first, you didn’t mention something else that helped me and that is leave a little slack between the back stakings, before propping it up. Staking out the back first with a little slack made all the difference for me. A tent like this, I think it will take a couple times to get used to making a good pitch. And I may or may not have had a couple beers when posting my initial rant.

    That triangle is called an equilateral triangle. Unfortunate I know that 😂 but I am a Geometry teacher in the “real world”. You got me eyeing that Altraplex. I picked up an Altaplex for my now cancelled 2020 AT thru hike attempt. The first time I set it up It didn't seem quite right. Then my lovely wife suggested the silliest thing a man can hear, "Why don't you read the instructions?" "Right Honey, thanks." Darwin - Finally a new idea for pitching the Altaplex. Question: The lines for the 2 back corners -- what angle do you use. Is the back of the tent AND the tent pegs all in a straight line? Or do the pegs go off at an angle relative to the back of the tent?

  • @tonyronco4040
    @tonyronco4040 4 года назад +6

    Old school reborn!
    That’s basically the same as the recommended sequence for pitching the Choiunard Megamid way back in the day: Stake the two far corners, set the pole up, check that your “triangle” is good, THEN stake the front corners. Finish with middle stake out points.
    No line-locs back then, no taut line hitches, just looped guylines for those Megamids👍

    • @brimstone33
      @brimstone33 4 года назад +2

      Hey fire up that MSR XGK with some white gas! No need for Line-locs, do it all old-school. Throw a separate tautline loop on your tie out and run your stake through that. Put a stopper knot on the end of your tie out so the loop doesn't slide off.

    Darwin, I just got my tent, and I took it out to practice this method you describe, and I had no room in my tent. I am 6' tall. I staked the back corners, got them tight. I inserted the pole and made the triangle, then went around and staked out the rest. When laying inside the tent, my head was just a few inches from the one end, and the top of the tent was touching my toes on the other. I got out and readjusted everything, trying to get it tighter, and the problem persisted. What am I doing wrong? I was so excited to get this tent, and now I feel like I've made a huge and expensive mistake.

    Now you just need to master the zero pole technique. Line from apex of tent to tree above! Useful when you break your pole or misplace them on the days hike...

    I'm having trouble with the 60" carbon fiber pole. It's almost too long. My front guy line almost goes straight down. Am I doing something wrong?

      It should. My Hexamid is a Tarp Shelter & it works perfectly for that every time!

      Nice, I have a Snow Peak Penta tarp that is a single pole setup that can use an oar or paddle. It’s my kayak beach shelter

    Great advice that I'll try with my new Lunar Solo. I do have a general question, though, about how to use rocks when the stakes don't work. I noticed you used rocks a lot on the PCT, and while I did pause and rewind the video to have a close look, I wasn't sure exactly what the concept was. Do the rocks just help keep the stakes in (something Ive done before on a freestanding tent), or do you use them instead of stakes? I know I'm going to like the Lunar Solo, but I am a little worried about having to pitch it in ground that sometimes doesn't cooperate. And I do have a specific trip planned that will involve camping on sand, and figure the Lunar Solo won't work at all for that. But maybe?

      I ain't no Darwin but hey, I have a bit of experience.
      My tent is a Lanshan 1.
      I have done both: I've used rocks instead of stakes, and I've used rocks to keep stakes in place. Using them instead of stakes can be a bit tricky, I tend to initially go for rocks that are smaller than what I need. But I get it done eventually.
      I have also hiked with a person who did not carry any stakes whatsoever and used rocks every night on any kind of ground. Their tent was different from mine but it was also a trekking pole tent.
      I did camp on sand one night. The stakes went in and held just fine. But there was hardly any wind that night.
      Another night I camped on very fine gravel. The stakes worked fine as well.

      @@fruity_hiker Awesome, thanks! That helps a lot. It's hard to test different ground conditions at home, and I really wasn't sure. But it sounds things will work out fine with a little extra work if needed with some rocks.

    When you were airing out this tent and the sleeping pad on your first AT video, was it because the tent took in a lot of water in that downpour?

    How do you break it down? Do you fold/roll or random stuff the Altaplex into the sack?

    • @DarwinOnthetrail

      I sorta do all the above. I fold it first, then Roll it, then stuff it in the bag. 🤙

      Take a look at the hexpeak and octapeak tents: www.luxeoutdoor.com/eng/catalog-topic.asp?selfpath=/173&selfid=173
      I own a hexpeak 6a, with a single person inner tent, but there is also a inner tent that will sleep 2.
      But it's not ultralite, mine weighs in at 4pounds (with 10 pegs and all lines)
