I Built A New CNC

  • Some video clips of my new CNC build. This is a Pro4848 from Avid CNC formerly known as CNCRouterParts. I built this over several days working 2 or 3 hours at a time. The assembly is complete and everything is working great. Next I will be adding some MDF strips and tee track for a spoil board. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them in the comment section below.

    Thanks everyone for watching my video and taking the time to comment. I would like to address some of the comments/questions below. First of all, this machine is an addition to my shop. The Avid CNC is NOT replacing my Gatton CNC or any other CNC that I own. My Gatton CNC is a real workhorse and will continue to be. Getting the Avid CNC will increase my production capacity if needed but it is mainly for some R&D prototypes that I've had on the drawing board for a long time but never brought them to life. I have had a machine very similar to the Avid CNC designed on my computer for years but I just have never built it. So when I started thinking about adding another CNC machine to my shop I compared the cost of trying to source all the components myself versus just purchasing this kit from Avid CNC and it was a no brainer. There was absolutely no sense in trying to reinvent the wheel. This is a very well designed machine and as a person who has spent the last 30 plus years in fabrication I can really appreciate a well thought out design. This Avid CNC machine kit was an absolute joy to assemble. The assembly instructions were very thorough (all 314 pages of them) and easy to understand. I went with the Plug and Play Nema 34 CNC Control System and setup couldn't have been easier. If you have any specific questions about my new Avid CNC Pro4848 feel free to ask me during my next Saturday livestream. Thanks again.

      Hi Dave, I have a Gatton 5 x 5, and cncRouterparts 48x96 as well and its just a solid and robust machine. I've had it for 3 years now and NO issue whatsoever. I will be getting their new Rotary axis soon. Have fun with your new acquisition.

      I'm in the gathering phase of building my first machine (still waiting on linear guides from China), and something that not many (if any) videos for home-shop CNC businesses talk about is how much of their day they spend doing business functions. Sales, marketing, Etsy, Ebay, craft shows, etc. We all want to play with the machines, but some of us plan on trying to make them pay their own way. What do we have to look forward to? Besides 14-hour days, I mean.

    Good morning Dave, These are the machines we use in out business, Just as Jim said below, I started with your wooded machine and eventually built this 4x4 and extended to 4x8. That us what like about Avid/CNCRouterParts, the fact that you can make them larger later without having to purchase a whole new machine. After running for a couple years with standard Nema23s, I took a leap and upgrade to Teknic motor/servos. While Teknic was remotely turning my motors, he made comment that the vibration characteristics he was seeing looked as good as a lot of the industrial equipment he had tuned. They are great machines.

      There's a fan at the top of the spindle that pulls air in and blows it out at the bottom of the spindle. Without a dust boot, it helps move the dust/chips away from the cutter (and all over the shop). With a dust boot and dust collection (highly recommended), it helps stir things up -- making the dust collector more effective -- IMHO.

    • @richardfarwell6759
      @richardfarwell6759 4 года назад

      @Steve Gronsky, I'd say you're better off with a water cooled spindle. I have the 2x2' Avid CNC and use a PC 3-1/2hp router. My router's fan blows chips all over -- even with a dust shoe. It gets really hot in short order too. I'd get a water cooled spindle in a heartbeat, but I don't have 220v in my "micro shop."
      Of course, it might be that an air cooled spindle won't get as hot as a router.

    Helll Dave. Thanks for the video. I’m putting together a new wood shop. I was pretty set on adding an Axiom Pro. Then, I started seeing more about Avid. Do you have any experience with Axiom? Have you ever compared the two brands? Thanks, Richard

    • @DaveGatton
      @DaveGatton  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching Richard. I've never compared the Axiom with the Avid and I don't know much about the Axiom. Zach @ Southern Ginger might be able to answer your questions about the Axiom has he has had one for a while now. I felt like the Avid Pro4848 was a good fit for me since I don't mind putting it together from a kit and that allows me to get a bigger machine than the Axiom is.

    • @DaveGatton
      @DaveGatton  4 года назад

      I have another video where i tell how much I spent right down to the penny. If you are planning to design and build one from scratch as you say I doubt that you could do it for less unless you consider your time to be absolutely worthless. I value my time and am certain I would have spent much more trying to design a one off CNC.

    Now this is a CNC Machine. Something I should have bought originally. It has a truly plug and play setup and the Spindle is something you cant get from Chineese manufacture. This will out last any other CNC you have in the shop. This can do some really heavy duty activity.

      @@DaveGatton I'm interested in people actually welding stuff together and solving problems, like ToT's router series, not this. But the title makes it seem like this is that. It's not.
      I suppose from your pov there probably are no disadvantages to naming the video something it's not, it's gonna get you the views so you have every incentive to do so.
      I'm aware you're aware, but it took me a few seconds to realize what the video was (or was not). Seconds which I'm never gonna get back, so I figured I'd return the favor.

      @@DaveGatton just name your stuff appropriately. The internet is already a clickbait cesspool as it is, and machining/cnc is this one good corner.
      You do you. For an assembly video it's actually pretty good quality, pretty good editing, and you don't seem like a bad guy at all. All I'm saying is you'd have an extra subscriber if you named it appropriately and now you have someone who won't click any time they see your name.
      It's a matter of principle, not quantity. If someone screws me over for 2 dollars, I won't trust them with 2 cents and I won't trust them with 2 grand.
      I am one person though, I'm sure most people don't care the least bit. I'm giving you my grief, they'll give you their love. If half the youtubers out there are any indication you should be safe to keep doing this. Have a nice one.
