I'd go for a Toyota 4 banger with a 5 speed, if you're having to totally do over. But going thru the engine was the right thing to do.

Those gouges in the piston could cause some spark knock, if that's a concern in this low compression engine. And, you know, it could be a concern if you were going to throw a turbo on it someday (foreshadowing).
