Sparkman & Stephens (S&S) are well regarded for their classic, sea worthy sail yacht designs and the Alpa 42 is absolutely no exception! Designed by S&S and built by Alpa Yards in 1977 in Northern Italy, this extremely well maintained bluewater ketch has been continuously upgraded, refit, and improved over the years for the utmost best in liveaboard and sailing comfort and safety.
For the beginner or novice sailor, the deep center cockpit design provides the best overall safety and comfort out of any leisure sailboat configuration. Additionally, the strong build and robust rigging of this boat are forgiving, while the ketch layout provides a large number of sail configuration, equalling safety and control in all weather conditions. Plus, a well maintained, completely rebuilt 80hp engine with only ~900 hours of runtime provides a reliable and safe way onwards through any conditions. Not to mention the bow thruster, which greatly simplifies mooring the yacht!
For the experienced sailor, this classic design is a true sailing boat. Designed and built to travel the world, the S&S Alpa 42 is a smooth sailor that can take anything you can throw at it. The heavy set, ¾ keel design means stability and comfort in even the roughest conditions, whether beating upwind or leisurely rolling downwind in a barndoor/butterfly configuration. Plus, the spinnaker and optional inner forestay for a hank-on sail provide even further sail configurations to ensure you get the most out of this beauty.
For the cruisers, liveaboards, and aspiring digital nomads, this Alpa 42 is well configured for the cruising and exploring life. Outfitted with all the major comforts required to comfortably live and work aboard, you won’t find yourself missing land life while anchored in a beautiful bay or cruising the open seas.
