    Using Tulip kits, we always pre-wash the shirts and then tie-dye them while the material is still slightly damp. This way the dye doesn't bead up or roll off, but soaks into the fabric like a sponge. Tulip kits have yielded fantastic results so far.

    I can’t wait for the yarn dyeing video. I have a lot of white cotton yarn and a lot of tie dye kits.

      I'm hoping to get it out this week or next week, but the results of dying the yarn have been pretty neat so far!

    Great video. We have just had our first attempt at TD a number of t-shirts using the Tulip One kits. We learned that you really really need to soak the sections of the shirt to get the dye coverage that you want. in addition to this we found that the scrunch and spiral methods work best. We washed our shirts on a quick wash setting at 30 degrees celsius and the colour run was minimal to none but we did notice that the dye loses its vibrancy after that first wash. I agree that there needs to be more detailed instructions around the nuances of TD and their kits and how to best use them.

    If u don't have original tie-dye bottle, how much water do u use

      I just measured the bottles I have, and they were right about 5 ounces. My understanding is you can use less if you want a more concentrated dye color. So I would add up to about 4 or 5 ounces of water to the dye packets. Happy tie dying!

    Sorry if you mentioned this, I am reading captions as to not wake anyone up and I can't find my earphones. Anyways, in my tye dye experiences I've always heard to soak your shirts in vinegar water first for 8 hours? then start dyeing after you ring them out as much as possible, it helps it set in the shirt and uses less dye and doesn't drip off of the shirt. Since it is already wet it soaks in. The other thing is a soda ash soak before dye. You can make your own soda ash, cheaper and fairly easy to do. Other than the dye immediately going into the fabric and not dripping off, I'm not sure if either vinegar or ash helps the dye stay vibrant truthfully? Of course the type of fabric has a lot to do with it all too. Soo many things. Lol I do have some yarn and tye dye to try one day myself. I am curious to see what you did, how you you do it, and how it turns out.
    I think your shirts look great! My kids always love dyeing shirts for The 4th and Halloween. I always try to buy them 2 sizes bigger so they can wear it longer. Lol

      That might be worth trying! I've got some extra dye left over, so I definitely want to experiment with different techniques to see how much they change the results. The Tulip Tie Dye kit I used in this video already has the soda ash mixed in with the dye pigment, but I wonder if adding more soda ash in would change how fast the dye reacts.
      That sounds like a fun tradition, and smart thinking about buying a bigger size! I bought my shirt in a larger size too, not for growing into it but because cotton seems to always shrink when I dry it haha!

    I wonder if it would bleed less if you let the shirts dry before you rinse them and then just put them in a bath of apple cider vinegar and rinse them after that. Just my thought but I’ve never done anything like this before either so you did a really great job. Thanks for the video I’m gonna give it a try.

      I was wondering how something like that would work, too! I've got more dye left over, so I'm wanting to experiment and test different options. Hope you have fun with this project!

    Can I do this on hats ? And can I reused the dye after few days ? Thanks

    • @CraftersAutonomous
      @CraftersAutonomous  7 месяцев назад

      If the hat is made of a natural fiber, then yes! This particular tie dye does not take well to synthetic materials. The shirts we used are 100% cotton and held the dye really well, but the thread used on the hems must've been a synthetic material because it did not change color at all.
      As far as reusing the dye- Tulip recommends using any mixed up dye within 24 hours. They say the colors will lose concentration and turn out much duller. Hope this helps!
