- In 2022, Sung Yoo moved from New York to Santa Monica, California - into a 140-square-foot tiny home. She currently pays $1,600 a month for rent. Take a look inside the minimalist space, which is smaller than the average size of a parking spot.
Unlocked is a home tour series focused on how much people across the globe spend on their housing, what they get for the money and what they had to sacrifice to make it happen.

She works for herself, she’s bringing in a lot of money, while saving a lot too! She’s killing it glad to see that she’s not spending nearly $5000 on housing anymore!!
170K income isn't extremely high for a white collar professional in that area of CA but still a very comfortable income for a person without children.

Wow they are really glamorizing that tiny space. I lived in a tiny studio and was going crazy after some months due to lack of space. Things like cooking, or having guests over, were very difficult
It could work if you just eat out with friends
it's not for everyone .
A tiny house is worth it in Santa Monica, great location, lots to do, perfect weather. I live in a big house and the location is mid, not a lot to do and the summer heat has been awful.
Same. I live in a studio apartment and it gives me both depression and anxiety. I honestly don't like it at all. Small space like this is ridiculous after a while.
I think as long as it was nice outside, I would be fine.
So, we're just going to ignore that this person is 40!!??? 😍

I prob can't do it personally, but for how tiny the home is.. it is quite modern and more spacious than I expected. Great location too

I would totally build a tiny home in the backyard. And add utilities to it by the official route. And charge nice amount of rent.
LIKE WARREN BUFFET SAID, DIVIDENDS ARE ONLY GOOD IF THE BUSINESS YOU'RE INVESTING INTO CAN'T MAKE GOOD USE OF THAT CAPITAL. SO, IF YOU'RE TRYING TO INVEST IN BUSINESSES WITH ACTUAL GROWTH, LOOKING AT DIVIDENDS IS A WASTE OF TIME. WHY ARE YOU INVESTING into a COMPANY IF THEY'RE RETURNING CAPITAL TO YOU BECAUSE THEY THINK YOU CAN MAKE A BETTER USE OF IT THAN THEY CAN. IT'S NOT MUCH DIFFERENT FROM BOND INVESTING. THE WAY I SEE IT, IF YOU have a $1 MILLION AT SOME POINT, THAT'D BE ENOUGH TO CREATE A PORTFOLIO THAT WOULD PAY YOU
BETWEEN 50k - 70k IN DIVIDEND INCOME
Well, when we talk about investment, I strongly advise you against self trading, it's really dangerous and had brought so many investors down, you need someone with the knowledge and strategies, someone dedicated to the crypto currency market business, and I will strongly recommend Carol Brewster
Yeah honestly I have also experience her great work , she's really exceptional in her services, Carol Brewster is real.

Very beautiful space I could see myself living in something like this, but I would need a kitchen of some sort

She lives in my area. And that rent is a steal. Her place is either a stand-alone tiny house or simply an ADU. An ADU is an Accessory Dwelling Unit--a building (usually a garage or shed)--that got expedited permits to be transformed into a rentable space. It's a way the city government has motivated homeowners to build housing that could be used to ease the housing crunch. There are many of those being built. My next door neighbor just finished hers. And the neighbor two doors down just started a week ago. But one thing about her place: It's not protected by rent control.
Go visit her
It has no stove/real kitchen, so that probably does make it an ADU.
Love seeing people don't go crazy on spending while they can have almost everything they need. I love the brightness of the inside of the house.
The rent for it alone is $1600 per mo. That's over $19,000 per year flushed, right down that always covered toilet.
SMH. I am amazed, mesmerized and inspired by Sung. She has found her safe space, happy spot, where she can thrive and what works for her.
Stop trying to normalize this as being an acceptable and affordable way to live smdh
If you want to live in a very desirable and expensive area at a relatively low cost (for the area), then it’s one of your very few options. You’re not going to get a five bedroom mansion done to your exact specifications on the beach next to Beyoncé for a dollar.
It looks so clean and charming, and considering that she lives in a warm climate, she can be outdoors often. I think she should put some plants in her outdoor space, like against the cinderblock wall.
I can't believe we're really celebrating renting out a parking spot for $1600/mo.
Here in NY they cleared a parking lots next to a shopping mall and put in$3k+ a month apts... they were sold out before they were completed.
Yeah but it’s Santa Monica not some podunk town

Positive experience. Very free and independent. It was hard initially but you get used to it. I think she just lived in a small place because she chose to and not because she has to. New York is a place you want to be if you like to live in small crowded places.
@@georgemaximus694 Interesting, I think you hit the key - it's easy to live in a small dwelling if the surrounding area is the type of place you want to be. IF you want a city with all it has to offer - living in a small space in NY is fine. IF you want beach - living in a small space in Santa Monica is fine. And so on for mountain areas, desert, whatever environs you want. It's living in a small space in a dangerous area that is miserable.

The truth with this recent economy is to manage your spending so that you can maximize your savings. Then invest your money in a variety of different assets so that it's properly diversified for the long haul.
For some months now, I've been hearing about this woman and her good works, how can someone contact her please???.
This is really helpful to my situation!! Thanks, I will search her immediately with the provided user-name using the mentioned app, I'll give her a head start of $3,500, to start building my retirement savings account.
Wow! I'm also a proud beneficiary of her investment,I saw people talk about this Vilma Kim Arnold here too sometime ago, My husband & I had no other option than to give it a try with $4,500. We got our payment of $16,300 after some weeks, she's trustworthy and reliable..
No doubt!! Vilma's strategy is the best for newbies, I decided to back up my assets and property with her when we met at a conference here in California. I no longer depend on this administration because we're about to lose it all..
I love how she also has a small corner of the outdoors as well. You don’t even get that in NYC for $1600 😂 But tbh, it’s only possible living there as a single person. It’s hard to live a minimalist lifestyle as a family with a small child… Children need things to learn and play with.
There should be more "communities" (be it apartments , condos, trailer parks or tiny house villages) that have a communal kids play space for like every 4-5 small family dwellings.
for sure tiny homes aint for ppl starting a family, but for sure ideal for 1 or two ppl that prefer to live in a small house then a apartment that could be double that price or worst a rented room at that price. slowly tiny homes is more encouraged to just one or two ppl living in it since it is a ridiculous old idea of after college or similar is get good job and as soon as possible get a 3 bedroom house which is insane today unless your fortunate to afford it.
$1600 with yard space exists in outer boroughs, just not Manhattan. A growing child, no, but a baby could live there. They make really tiny cribs now and babies require stuff but they don't need much for development until they're a toddler. So might be a good way for a new family to save up for a couple of years.
It can be done if living in a warm weather outdoorsy place. We are a family of 4 plus a dog and moved to Hawaii and live in approximately 730sq. ft and thriving for the past 3 yrs. So much closer as a family literally and figuratively. Our place is thoughtful and minimal and it teaches my teens how to live more intentionally with less. It does make it easier that the weather is perfect year round and the beach is steps from our place.
There’s plenty of those for $1300-$1500 in non-Manhattan nyc
Hi! My name is Tamara and i'm from Argentina and I find it a super interesting idea to reduce your life to a smaller space and having less possessions because it really requires you to THINK differently.
Your way of life (which later we can ask how can be expanded to more people who may or may not want to live alone) is revolutionary in some way. It forces you to confront your needs, about what you actually use, there are no frivolous possessions. It is something that goes in a different direction from the consumerist programming of American life (and even more in a state like California) and on the other hand it seems to be something potentially great to help lower environmental impact in the coming years!
I think that as a culture we are still far from understanding that "less is more" but I seriously believe that what you are doing in part shows it. It is paradoxical that the more we free ourselves from things we do not need the more space we give in our lives to be able to think, create and have space in our mind! It is as if having fewer distractions leaves more space in our head, more 'empty space' so that different things arise: like thinking that it is possible to live in a small space.
I will be visiting California later this year! I will definitely continue to see how this community evolves! but I congratulate you and above all I share the love of what you are undertaking.
Thank you!
How nice of you to take out time to write such an encouraging and insightful comment.
I lived in LA for 35+ years and would say that's more the exception than the norm. With the recent push for more housing and for more ADU's, there will definitely be a push for more of these housing in the coming years. They will typically less visible though, since they will more likely be the backhouse.
Does she really have less possessions though? She rents offsite storage for $236/month ... that's alot of storage.
It's a cute little space. I'd probably take advantage of the outdoor space it I had this kind of housing.
I enjoyed this. Thank you. 😁😁
after living in NYC micro apts, this is a steal! 👏🏾
As someone that lives in a tiny house this is totally glamorized. Where are the extra bed sheets, and extra toilet paper and paper towels, socks and underwear, casual clothes, cleaning supplies etc. It’s almost as if this was staged and it doesn’t look lived in. But I guess that’s what people do online. My tiny house is nice but it is cluttered for sure.
that's why she has to pay 200 something per month for storage. she mentioned that in the video too
These are known as ADUs or Granny flats and they're usually less than 500 square feet. They're also built on the same lot as a single family home and back in 2018 the governor passed a law making it easier to build them as part of a solution to the housing crisis happening in California.

How do you know where this is located????? They don't tell you. It is somewhere that is 8 minute drive to the beach in Santa Monica.
I’m so grateful for seeing this 🙌🏽
I've lived in a small shoebox size home and now currently a big home and I cant say i'd go back. The whole living small just doesn't do it for me. I have a friend like her though who lives a tiny minimalist lifestyle and thats good if you can deal with the limited space.
Word.
I've been designing and building small spaces for a few years now and I have a few rules for tiny spaces that are absolutely required: No less than the space of a 40ft container, a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with shower, small storage space, bedroom that is NO LESS THAN 10% of the overall space, an open area that is no less than 50% of the overall space, AC and heating. Anything less and it is more like a prison than home. Humans are not meant to live in confined extra small spaces for an extended amount of time. I always tell people that if they want to go small they should AT MINIMUM be ready to build a connected 40ft container space AT MINIMUM.
Could you point on how to find designs based on area and weather? I'm looking for BUILDING a tiny house in a small land in a country oversees! So I would probably need to have blueprints, design matching climate and location, know what material I need (hard to import for that country) and make it SAFE!.
I'm not a construction person, but I know some regular friends who work in Normal construction in the US.
How do I start something like that? I'm all for natural light, minimal design, wood/white/plants etc..
I would also like that it cost less than$50k (depending of course on material prices in that country which I have no idea)
Also what's the gochas? Like your comment was really helpful bc it's a big gotcha to fall for the design then figure it's not really liveable.
Thanks!
@@espressoarabic Hello. That's a lot of questions. You're pretty much asking for a project scope with designs included. Those things cost.
Start with RUclips videos but be aware that there's much more to building tiny than just a tiny structure itself.
A big gotcha would be the roof on the container. It can be put on last and it doesn't have to be put on right away but you want to put a roof on ASAP for a few reasons, one mainly being to assist with climate control.

Seems similar space with living in RV. Awesome design and not using heat/cool is superb.
Good luck building a tiny house community in California. We so need it but I know when the county I live in northern California only allows ADU and has resisted communities. It doesn’t pay their pensions and perks. I lived in a 27 foot travel trailer for four years while building a house in 1989. It took us for years to build a house. We both worked full-time jobs and did 98% of the construction ourselves. It was a 2800 square-foot house so quite the undertaking. At this point in my life in my 60s, I long to go back to a simpler way of life that living tiny provides.

Classy lady, yes. Classy space, no.
Don't mean to be rude or anything. But, this design is not practical at all. No fully functional kitchen, no storage & have to pay at least 200 dollars each month for one, no proper air ventilation system and the list goes on. I think this design might work for a Muji hotel, but not a long term house.
I can assure you it gets hot AF in there. I lived in a so called tiny home for ten years and it was better than this crap, but yet, was hot AF in the summer, cold AF in the winter. And I was in East L.A.

It's embarrassing. Why not just invest your money so that you don't have to live inside of a shoe.
@@Blackfeet I do, with all the money I make from the tinyhouse and work I buy properties (going to my third now) and have quality life in LA which is a city I love. Besides all the travel I do every year.
Excellent article
I think there is a huge difference between what "we need" and what we want. Some people are ok with living in a tiny house and others just need more room, I would be one of those people. LOL!! Congratulations to you, glad you can make it work and are happy.
This space is so cozy and peaceful, I'd definitely live there
For that amount, you would live in a 7 bedroom mansion in Nigeria with a swimming pool.
Wow! What a beautiful lady and a beautiful place to live!❤
Her personality is incredible!
She looks fantastic for 40, wow… I want to be like her when I grow up😅
You want to be a 40 year old single woman living in a tiny home? Yeah I don’t think she’s who you want to be like.
Otherwise her looks aren’t shabby for a 40 year old.
dude i just realise she's 40 when i stumble across your comment, wow that is absolutely amazing i though she was about 28~29 she definitely stunning at 40
yeah but you have to have certain genes though
What? 40yrs is nothing. Are you serious? IMO 50-60 is when you even start to show signs unless you've been drinking, obese or had a pretty rough life
@@user-zh3ow4nh3p idk where you’re from, but where i am at people in their mid 30s dont even look remotely close as her 😅
She is 40 and looks way younger. ❤️
Well she is saving on average 25k a year, the question would be:
is it worth the compromise of living for the cash?
I used to live in a tiny home in East Los and while it seems like a good idea on some days, most of the time I hated it. You can't have more than one friend over, you can't really bring your date over either, landlord will hear everything and let's be honest, it's not as cute for a man to live in a so called tiny home. You can't cook, so I ended up effing up my health for a while because I had to eat out all the time. I mean you get used to it, and I would consider moving back to tiny home but not for no $1,600. I payed $500 a month (2013-2019) and it was bigger than this shoebox.
I live in a gorgeous tiny house in West Hollywood, huge garden /patio, back house . Looks like an elf cottage.thank you gods for rent control… been here since 2014. Paying 888. Had to flex. I also thought the Craigslist ad was bs 🤣
No storage unit cost either 😜
Don’t believe you
I love this one, and her energy! I move to Nashville this month (woo hoo) and am literally throwing away everything. I only want to bring my bed (a king), furniture, clothes, candles, and my plants. I'll have a lot more space than her, but she is so right about living intentionally. I don't even have a table. Lol! Anyway, this woman is right where she's supposed to be. Goals!
is Nashville rich like Beverly Hills? I am seeing all these videos about people driving lambos, ferraris, etc.
I love how modern it is. How much did it cost to build though?
Very nice tiny house. With impeccable timing I was fortunate enough to buy a 950sq ft. single family home about 10 min from the beach. My mortgage payment is considerably less than her rent and storage. I save roughly $2500 a month on 100k a year salary and own a beautiful home in a nice quiet SoCal neighborhood
I live in santa monica in a 450 sq foot studio which cost $2200 a month. Close to the beach
I would take this over my crappy 340 sqft studio apartment in SF. This is much more modern, has a backyard, right by the beach and nobody on top or below you. I lived in a horribly old studio apartment on the 2nd floor of an apartment. All I saw was homeless people screaming, pooping, peeing and vandalizing the property when they got kicked out.
Beautiful and smart! !!!
I would need more windows but I love the design.
She does not look 40.
East Asians don't age at the same rate as other races, well known fact.
I would love to find out what she used on her skin. I love her jeans too!
omg she looks amazing!!!!!! how are people are bothered when she looks like that?! she clearly is happy and not stressing about her life so why are we?
Miserable people
Who is bothered??
You must mean yourself
