It is precisely the discipline he imposed on his musicians and the confidence he had in his abilities that allowed him to be able to afford such musical sculptures... air sculptures.. One day you will have to listen to the Zoot Allures version! Nice reaction!
I think he uses something that in the seventies we called phaser, kinde of a Leslie machine swirling around. The hahaha at the end was a quote from O Superman by Laurie Anderson that he used often in the same show
in case you are wondering... or interested, that weird sound he gets at 2:40 of your video (that you mention) he is doing that by flickering his index fingerr's FINGERNAIL over the strings a bit like a Flamenco guitarist, but--- on a Strat. You can see him doing it on video during the of solo Any kind of Pain from Barcelona.
One of my favorite FZ solo’s. Saw that tour in Towson MD at Towson University. Huge band. If I’m not mistaken the band broke up that same summer. FZ was diagnosed with cancer shortly after. 😢
He’s always pushing his own capabilities every time he plays a solo. He does not repeat solo’s the exact same way. He plays with a freedom and on instinct to how he feels. Some of his guitar solos are up there with the greatest. Raw talent at its finest. Even the great Jeff beck would take a bow
Love that NY version to bits. It never gets put back in the shelf. It is always besides the player. Year after year :) Wife says i will be buried with it
ok... this is a little bit complicated to explain... but I'll try. Frank had this sound on his guitar ONLY when he played in theatres or auditoriums that had a space underneath the stage for another amplifier that would be pointed DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH FRANK'S FEET. This placement of the amp... combined with his direct to board output would create a sound that NO ONE else had. Because NOBODY other that Zappa ever placed an amplifier UNDER their feet hidden UNDER the stage. You can see him adjusting these effects in the Beacon Theatre rehearsals. A place where he LOVED to use this effect.
100% agree Act 1 : 40 minutes long Act 2 : 38 minutes long Act 3 : 37 minutes long This would be so cool Or even break up into side 1 through side 6 That would be only 20 minutes Rory I challenge you to listen to side 1 and then try not to go further
So I remembered my sister in law brothers name who was in Frank Zappa and The Mother's Invention his name was Jim Sherwood. I mentioned this in a different reaction, someone asked what his name was so I remembered. Frank Zappa was a incredible musician. I hope everyone has an awesome week 😊💓🤘✌️ Thank you Rory for sharing this awesome video.
@Laura Watters - Hi Laura, it's great that you remembered! Jim "Motorhead" Sherwood was one of Frank's oldest friends, the roadie for the band, played sax, tambourine and did other crazy things in The Mothers of Invention. He then came back and recorded his last work with Frank on the 1981 album You Are What You Is. He provided snorks on the song Beauty Knows No Pain, sax and snorks on the song Mudd Club and provided snorks on the last song on the album called Drafter Again.
@@Frunobulax74 well thank you!! It's a long time since I talked to my sister in law we were really close. Definitely some crazy stuff in the Mother's Invention. Thank you for responding and being kind I appreciate it. 😊💓🤘✌️

For me, i can only admire his music if i don't separate the instruments, i listen as a hole being just one, apreciating that what he himself disengages or outstands, could be the guitar, percursion, drums or the duck noise😂
Obviously, after a good meal, and the right company, theres is never any need for herb n booze or anything when you listen to Frank! Thats where i like to mess with peolle! Lol! They think theyre coming to toke some ziller hash, and ,.... Voila! I hit em hard with The Frank!!! And # hash tag everyone freaks out and has a fantastic time!!!!

@@chaosmos24 Les Claypool is a massive massive fan of Zappa as you will not be too surprised to hear, of course he has spoken about Frank in interviews stating his respect and high regard for the man and the artist that he was and for his absolute uniqueness. Frank Zappa has been a huge influence upon Les Claypool for many many years and so it wouldn't surprise me if Les throws a little bit of Frank into his performance to this day. The sound of Frank's guitar around the 8.30-9 minute mark is very "St Etienne" like.

All my favorite bands come from England. EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER, YES, BUT am DAM proud to have mr. Zappa as my countryman!!!!!
Scott Thunes goes absolutely insane. What a monster.
The live in New York version is incredible.

I'd forgotten about this album. Really an awesome collection of some of his best live music.
I Love this solo!!!
Have that cd. Later in his career. Still ridiculously good. Those bands were insanely talented.

This is good but listen to the version on You Can’t do that on Stage Anymore vol 1. That is the greatest as far as I can tell.
Frank Zappa, then Robert Fripp, then nothing then nothing, then God, then Steve Vai and perhaps eeeh. no... ;)
You have done 2 different versions of this but I think the Zoot Allures version is what you should listen to
Goddamn

To me it's like he is using a slap bass technique on a guitar instead of a bass.
I actually think there is a similarity in Zappa's guitar playing to the way Les Claypool of Primus plays his bass.

The original is so much better with background squealing provided by Frank's wife and her friend courtesy of Frank supposedly.
