I’m a Phils fan, and it really sucks Acuna got hurt again. I really enjoy watching him play. Hope he bounces back like Frank Gore and has a hell of a career
IIRC, his 2021 injury was on a flyball off the bat of Jazz Chisholm Jr. and someone from the Marlins stopped Jazz at third base so it would 'only' be a triple instead of a homer, given that Acuña was hurt. Conversely, I remember when Charlie Culberson got his face broken by a wild pitch and the Nationals asked for a review of if he went around or not while he's lying on the ground pouring out blood in the batter's box
@@CrosbyBaseball I remember when chase utley injured dude at second and they realized he was safe and they were challenging. The look on chases face is so good
Now just add Laz Diaz and C. B. Buckner to the list and we’re getting somewhere. It is pure idiocy to have a profession where you can’t simply let go employees that can’t work to standard. Moreover, MLB needs to embrace tech calling balls and strikes. If not for every pitch, need to give both teams 3 challenges. Enough with the stupidity. Game. After game. After game, ad nauseum. “That’s not healthy for the sport.” Indeed. Well said.
I think they are embracing it, they are giving it a trial run in the MILB, they aren't going to just implement ROBO umps or whatever until they get 100% right down in MILB
Agree. Even though Manfred vetoed the use of the ABS system, it couuld still serve as a useful tool for the evaluation of umpires - at least, when it comes to the strike zone. You mentioned the challenge system. That's what we have in Triple-A. It's great, and often eye-opening. I've worked games where the umpire continually had ball/strike calls overturned, but I've also worked games where the umpire's calls were upheld. It really does separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to this particular skill. (In fact, our Opening Day was a doubleheader. The two plate umpires "hit" 7-for-7 when it came to having their calls upheld. In the first game, I recall that both teams were out of challenges by the fourth inning but I'd have to go look that up.) Bailey of Foolish Baseball did a video last year in which he rated the best coach at getting favorable calls with replay. If he can do that, certainly MLB could use it the other way to see which umpires get rulings upheld or overturned the most often.
@@fredreichwein2313 probably the umpire union not the MLB. Remember the MLB tried to fire him a few years ago, Angel sued them over racism, and the resulting investigation came back that Angel was just bad at his job. Good riddance to him.
I think what everyone misses in saying that Ángel wasn’t as bad as his reputation is that it was way more than just his balls and strikes. It was that his brain fart quotient was entirely off the scale. One forgotten example: in the 2009 ALDS, Hernandez completely missed a fair/foul call on either Texeira or Cabrera’s game-tying double. He called the ball fair; replay showed it was clearly foul. Plays in the field, there were some things that he would just inexplicably miss.
For Ronald, the hardest part will be his mental health. He’s spoken about the last recovery and the toll it took on him. Hopefully with this understanding, Braves org and him and stay connected and open communication.
Go to a Cardinals game. Every time an old player comes up they get a standing ovation. Last week when Tyler O'Neill came back. Everyone was cheering when he hit a home run on us. I was like okay the standing ovation is cool. But why are we cheering for his home run 😂
It's really interesting to look at the umpiring stats for all of the umps. I saw somewhere that with a two strike count and a pitch to a low corner, umps make the call accuratly only 45% of the time.
umps have a very strong union and that should be the case. they need to be immune from pressure to fix games or being given instructions to manipulate calls
Everytime MadBum came to SF we cheered for him despite being a DBack and seemingly hating it the more we did it but he still deserved it. Obviously a little different since hes an actual living legend for SF but we always wish him the best. Even now he should come home! Hope Cousell gets the standing O eventually
Was it piling on when it comes to Angel Hernandez? Maybe, but the fact that he decided to quit so abruptly....that is potentially one of the best 'bow to public pressure and criticism' in years, especially in sports. MLB should take that as a hint that adding 'accountability' for its umpire crews would improve things.
Maybe the takeaway this time for Acuńa will be that if he leads off the game by getting on base, he doesn't automatically have to steal. I know it's exciting and it pads the numbers but think situationally. Anyway, get well soon and go Braves.
Counsell isn't just a long term player who left a team. Counsell was born and raised in MKE. His dad worked for the Brewers. And the Brewers offered him the highest contract ever for a manager. Then went to the Cubs. It it betrayal.
People don't seem to understand this part. He became a Cub and talked about how excited he is to be a part of that org, it makes all he said when becoming the Brewers manager disingenuous. He becomes a two-faced liar. I wouldn't blame him as much if he just said the money and the payroll were too good to pass up, instead he's put on the theatrics.
Consider this, what is worse? An umpire that makes some bad calls here and there (admittedly more than others) but never goes on a power trip? or vice versa? As a player, I'm okay with some bad calls, he is human after all. It's the Ron Kulpa's and CB Bucknor's of the game that I can't get behind. They eject people unnecessarily with no feel for the bigger picture of the game and legitimately think they can do whatever they want.. much worse than the occasional flub on a frickin 98 mph pitch....
I blame the umpire's union. They should have done something long ago. 'Send him down' to AAA... have remediation courses. Something. The whole just sending the difficult umpires out there all the time is wrong. The lack of transparency is hurting them...
I'm mixed. I'm happy an umpire who was horrible is out of the game but I will miss angel. You always knew something was going to happen when you saw he was part of the crew doing your team's game or a Sunday night game
I don't feel the least bit sorry about angel getting crap online. Be better. The only reason hes gone is because MLB PAID HIM TO LEAVE. HES SO BAD AT HIS JOB THEY PAID HIM TO GO AWAY. Dude probably got more money to walk away from his job than what most of us will make in 20 years.
I read a study recently about umpiring calls in MLB. The focus of the article I read was on Angel Hernandez's stats compared to other umps. His numbers were right near the mean average, and the crux of the analysis was that he'd been unfairly targeted, considering that there were umps w/ many more egregious errors. Having a player offer their opinion on an ump doesn't override the statistical data.
Not to get overly political, but it’s hilarious to me that we’re having a conversation about combatting lifetime appointments of umpires before the Supreme Court 😂
As a Giants fan, got to say it's been a real downer watching a guy get paid 30+ million a year to have his spring training for the first 3 months of the season.

Lol no way acuna is out for the rest of the season and the biggest news of the day/title of the video is an umpire retired 😂 I wholeheartedly agree with that tho lol angel Hernandez had to leave
Angel wasn't the worst but some of the things he has done put the spotlight on himself. There is that infamous moment when he and a drunk Mongo were arguing.
9W in last 11 games, 2L when Webb pitched well but closers lost the Giants both games. And they never talk about them at all. Maybe if the Giants wins the series against the Phillies 🤷🏻
