I have to admit that the song didn't really grab me at first. But after a few listens it started to grow on me. Great analysis, RUclips finally recommended something worthwhile on my homepage.
You're insane...thank you so much for this. Your presentation is always so on point, ready to explain, but doesn't linger to the point of boredom. You're really good at keeping attention. I can't believe you did all this in 1 day
Interesting what we will see in the upcoming album. It's definitely have the classic DT feel and some cool musical and technical tricks! As always, thank you so much for your amazing work.
Man this just came out not that long ago I believe and you have it nailed. Amazing getting those chord voicings from the recording is really amazing to me.
I had listened to this song many times, but seeing your analysis makes me appreciate the intricacies and musical genius included in it, which otherwise would've gone undetected. Please keep doing these analysis once in a while, I understand they're very hard and there's not much of a return for you, but damn it's of so much value.
Geez, thats some fast work to nail this humdinger of a tune. Earned an instant sub for sure! I think it's not a bad first single from the album. Definitely better than expected. Is it safe? Hmm, sure it's nothing that we haven't heard from DT before but on the other hand it has a complexity and sound I haven't heard in a while. I give it an 8/10, thinking it might grow even more. Will be interesting to see if they play it live on Sunday and what it sounds like in that format.
Amazing work, especially so quickly after the song was released. Thank you so much for doing this. I'd love to hear you talk some time about how you go about figuring out fast sections like the three bars during the solo with "16:14" shown. I know that it's 16 notes played within a 7/16 or 14/32 measure, but how do you manage to figure that out while learning it? Is it essentially just slowing it down a ton, and thinking of one of the measures as a single pulse and then counting out the total number of notes? Seeing stuff like that in transcriptions always trips me up.
@@Rapterr15 Yeah I slowed down that section, and watched the music video for confirmation on the fingering. It’s basically just cramming a bunch of notes into those bars
This is such a great breakdown of this song. For real. Youre amazing at what you do. Id definitely be all ears if you do this with more technical songs in general. Its really cool hearing the actual theory behind it all. It helps me actually grasp theory a bit more than before. It's one thing to just talk about it and maybe show some riffs. (Which is still great. Dont get me wrong). But, when youre going over songs. It kind of brings it home. Rounds it around. If that makes sense. Always love your videos, man. Thanks! I vote you go over a Persefone song next. Youre favorite one. Man, i finally bit the bullet too. I got a 6 string guitar. (Played only on 8's the entire time because I'm nuts. 9 years). I cant believe how much i was holding myself back, as far as progress goes due to that decision. Reason i bring that up is because ever since i started attempting to learn stuff from your videos. I realized theres no fucking way i can play how Id want in the long run. Using nothing but 8's. Thanks for guiding me to that conclusion with your beast videos. ✌️
Hi, I'm not a guitar player... I only play synths really. But I was just curious about how you mentioned that there's no way you could play everything the way you wanted it to sound only using 8 string s... Like for example, if I don't have a full sized 88 keys, my only options on smaller key boards are trying to change tunings and transposing.... But I always seem to run out of octave range, and of course it may switch the fingering of everything..I was just wondering if you run into similar difficulties with using a 6, 7, or 8 string guitar or if it's just simply a matter of having all of these instrument's to use only making minor adjustments to grasp the feel of the new extended or restricted rangers being the main difference?? I hope that makes some sort of sense, like I said I'm a keys player so my knowledge of the intricacies of guitar player are quite limited.... Lol
@@rynknan I already have a bunch on the channel. I have one for Haken, Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation, Genesis and more. I do these at least semi regularly.
Thanks a lot for the great analysis; that was very informative! One short info: the scale used during the shred part is also known as the Algerian scale. I recognized it a bit because we use it in traditional music, but I wasn't sure. Thanks for confirming it.
Thanks for the video, I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis. I agree with your thoughts that JP is channeling Alex Lifeson and his eastern European influences. Others have already commented on the As I Am leitmotif, but there are some other examples of that in this track, including a little Liquid Tension Experiment as well. I call them DT Easter Eggs. I agree that this is a vanilla release (for 'the radio'...) and also hope that we see an album of evolution and innovation as DT 1.3 continues to push the envelope...

@@MrNatebain I transcribed most of this before he put out his transcription. But I did check his out to confirm a few things, he does the best DT transcriptions
Woulda been cool if you pointed out that the first riff in the instrumental passage is mostly minor chromatic mediants, which evoke a VERY specific vibe of evilness, instead of just planeing the chords. When they plane in semitones thats another modulatory vibe thats evil, or with the chords planeing in tritones, but those each are distinct demonic vibes in and of themselves. "Black metally chord progressions" if you will. And of course they can be planed in whole tones which is a diatonic sound. Different (less cool) vibe. Irregardless I learned that riff and the following riff on guitar today and theyre SUPER fun to play. Thanks for the harmonic breakdown and at least throwing the chords up there. Saves me the trouble as thats my fave part which is why Im mainly focused on commenting about it. Though I could tell with ear training its all minor chrom-meds so maybe I wouldnt have tried to do an analysis to see whats going on harmonically cos usually I put in the effort to do that when its a more complex form of constant dramatic modulation.
@@jamespeterson1630 I put this together very quickly so some small details like that got missed. Also it’s not all chromatic mediants, just mostly. But you are right that that evokes a very specific sound. I’ve talked about chromatic mediants before in other lessons.

It’s a typical DT song which if you are a fan than it’s not a bad thing and you don’t expect them to reinvent the wheel after almost 40 years as a band and getting their sound down pat.
