iPhone 16 Is Behind On AI, But That’s OK?

  • Correction: MagSafe board, not MagSafe logic board. 😅
Apple and consequently iPhone are behind on AI, which shows in how the iPhone 16 lineup has gone on sale and should be in people’s hands before the AI features present in Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” keynote are available on the devices.
Some of the presented AI features will be available as part of a beta test on iPhone 15 Pro’s and all iPhone 16 models starting in October, and that will be in most regions, except for the EU, while more AI features will be released later, in 2025 to my understanding.
Is iPhone behind on AI? Definitely, yes.
However, is it a huge problem? I would argue that it is not.
Many of the AI features aren’t big quality of life improvements, and Apple in general focuses on features that improve quality of life or provide real value, such as A-Fib detection with the Apple Watch, or providing a hearing test with AirPods, that has received FDA clearance.
Apple focuses on providing what matters most and does that well, and has also hopped onto the AI bandwagon as they’ve been getting negative coverage that they’ve fallen behind.
So they will be providing the “write an email for me” feature, the “tell me if I’ll be late for a meeting” feature, etc, however those aren’t as valuable nor as important as things Apple has already provided to iPhone users.
Other than that, companies don’t always invent features or even necessarily invent or make products from the beginning. Google didn’t found RUclips, they bought them, and Elon Musk didn’t found Tesla, he bought it. Now Google and Elon have made RUclips and Tesla respectively into what they are today, but you get the idea.
Likewise, if needed, Apple can continue partnering with advanced AI providers such as OpenAI, just like Google search is the default search engine on iPhones, or maybe they can acquire AI startups that have advanced models, if they find that AI will truly be useful to iPhone users in a positive life changing way, and the way they would have a work around for the fact that having advanced AI takes time, because it involves training AI models which takes time.
Anyway, in conclusion, Apple will probably be fine going forward. The core of what they do has not changed, which is their closed ecosystem that enables them to deliver high quality reliable products that last for a very long time. And as for the AI issue, that has the potential solutions I’ve already discussed. 🙂
    Thank you for watching!
