I grew up with the impression of golf as this super rich persons thing with stuffy private clubs. As a new player, the experience has been the exact opposite. Members have been super welcoming, every random player I've walked with has been great and the atmosphere is generally just awesome. The price of my golf membership is about as expensive as a regular gym membership. When I see these perfectly manicured walled gardens where you have to spend 5 years on a waiting list after being vouched for by a member I get the feeling that the club is more about status than golf.

    • @matthewtanner5127

i can't speak to where you live, but country club membership where I live is exactly the awful scenario you've described, and clublink is more of the same. I never thought I'd be a golfer but fell deeply in love a year and a half ago when the context suddenly made sense for me (walking in a park with friends doing an activity because men are bad at expressing emotions) but golf is expensive as fuck, and I go to equinox.

Another great film Erik! Played there a few times with mates that live in London, great track and with the walkers makes it more interesting! Had my most interesting shot and longest drive there.. the par 5 over the ravine nr the windmill.. fairway clear, I tee’d off.. ball going right, a lady with a long wax coat on came out of the bushes, ball pitched and went straight in her pocket without realising and she kept walking… I grabbed my bag, chased down the fairway, got to her… she looked at me strange when I said “you have my ball in your pocket”.. but she removed it and I suggested she just threw it back onto the fairway.. 400+ yard drive!

@@stuartstogdill2406 how are young people supposed to get 'in to' golf at a private club unless someone they know is a member or they have very rich parents? Council courses here in Scotland do a much better job of offering young people huge discounts, free lessons and free club hire, alongside a more welcoming clientele of honest, hard-working folks who actually want to see more kids on their course. Every time I played a private course as a teenager or young adult I was always made to feel inferior, or as though I wasn't supposed to be there, not exactly the kind of atmosphere that'll grow the game.

I play at this lovely course - Wimbledon Common Golf Club. On the whole the video shows the course off very well, but I would say it overstates the dog walkers issue - there are a couple of shots that makes it look like the place is overrun, when it really isn't. We have a code of conduct for dog walkers as well as golfers (not sure how many people have read it though!). On a Saturday morning, you can get a 4-ball round in about 4 hours, including a few 'waits' on the tee. Most walkers are friendly, a small handful don't want us there and go out of their way to obstruct, but the fact that golf has been played there continuously for 150+ years speaks volumes about our claim to remain there! After lockdown was challenging when the people of Wimbledon had spent 4 months having the whole course to wander over uninterrupted - many people had recently discovered it and when golf resumed they had no idea about golf. We had volunteer marshalls to explain and guide people and in fact many regular walkers said it was lovely to have us back.

I have played London Scottish often and couldn’t recommend it highly enough. They have a Winter Open that, in mid February, is for many in Surrey and the Home Counties is the start of the years competitive play, and is always at full capacity (around 100 entrants teeing off on a cold winters dawn and finishing in the brisk early sunset, followed by a hearty bowl of home cooked heaven served hot and generously and a well deserved pint of something restorative), is astonishing value - apply if you can!
With its fast draining, firm and undulating greens, and beautiful but highly challenging par threes, and the the quirkiness, welcome, food, atmosphere and character of this course and clubhouse, few would disagree that this is a special place in the hearts of those of us who are lucky enough to play this ancient links.

This is deff my personal Top 5! (The others being 96 holes in a day, that course deep in the woods i think that was NORCAL or Oregon?, the hidden old Old Tom Morris, and then the Northern most course in Norway was it?) I remember the Australian courses and cant imagine having to play on sand, but this here on Common land peaks my interest even more so. Take a drive and yell fore and hope a dog doesn't steal your ball.

I'd hate to play this club. Here in the UK almost all of our courses give certain points of access on the course to walkers and ramblers but this course(s) is just a nightmare to me and would disturb my main aim of having a 'relaxing' round of golf. I do love golf yet hate the stuffiness and snobbery surrounding it but I also love the peacefulness it provides. I don't see much chance for relaxing here. Hardly surprising given it's in London though. Get up to the North West of England as soon as you can Erik and visit the Golf Coast of Merseyside and Lancashire.

You should check out Braid hills in Edinburgh. 4 golf clubs share the course with the public. There used to be two 18 hole courses with a pub in the middle. Now the pub is gone and there is only an 18 and a 9 hole but it is actually the place where the Honourable Company were going to move before deciding on muirfield. The course is within the Braid hills and has the best view of the city from the 18th green. One of the clubs has had James Braid, his son and grandson as club captains and funnily enough the name Braid is merely a coincidence. Tommy Armour was also a member and a few other notable figures.

This reminds me of my club here in Christchurch, New Zealand, Hagley Golf Club. Has been in the very public Hagley park since 1873 (oldest club in the Canterbury province). Luckily not quite as many people as London😂. Japanese tourists do love to wander about in the middle of the fairways taking photos, completely oblivious to the fact that you’re standing there ready to smash a drive. Saw a guy who had pulled up a sofa next to one of the greens a couple of Sundays ago, and was enjoying a few beers in the sun (probably not the greatest spot to park up). Also had a lady walking her dog try to pick up one of my Pro V1’s to give to her dog (I was only about 30 meters away, thought it would be obvious that the ball on the ground belonged to the guy with the golf clubs walking towards it). Overall it’s not too bad though, there are about three holes that you have to be really conscious of pedestrians, but once you get deeper into it, you tend to forget.

I grew up in NZ watching the Wombles and could never understand why the theme song said wombles of Wimbledon common are we when in fact they were so elusive, it wasn’t till I grew up and moved to london to discover what a common was that it all clicked… I loved spending summer Sundays recovering on Wimbledon common, never did see a womble though…

Interesting to see more younger members at both clubs nowadays. Definitely wasn’t the case when I was a student member around 10 years ago so having an affordable price structure must be helping them attract young people which is great for the health of any club

I used to be a member of The Royal Epping golf club, in chingford north east london, which was established in 1888. Opened by Queen Victoria herself. And has the exact same atmosphere with members of the public everywhere except they've got rid of the "wearing red" rule.
Not gonna lie ,people having picnics in the middle of the fairway was annoying. 😂

ive played this course many times ( im from wimby) . fairways are fairly narrow. people walking around quite a lot you will start hitting golf balls near them you have no choice. didnt realise it was a more down to earth club. i always thought wimb park golf course was a bit snobby.

You should come to Saint Louis, Missouri. We have a Golf Course in Forest Park, home of the 1904 Worlds Fair and the 4th most visited park in the country.
Wait till the spring tho it sucks here in the winter

Royal Wimbledon GC really not coming out of this very well - but that's entirely due to their policy choices; you make your bed and you have to lie in it.
