I moved here in Sept of 2000 and the mall wasn't that busy then. Weekends then were like during the week is now. All the floors were wood. I hated to see them replace those hardwoods with some carpet and tile in some areas. That Best Buy used to be a Circuit City. I don't like very close to that mall anymore.
The classic Mills aesthetic was one of a kind and easily identifiable (I'm most nostalgic about the design of Ontario Mills in California as part of my teen years, which in time has gone with neutral look since Simon took over). I think over time, both Simon and Westfield gravitated towards this neutral, bland look. It's the whole "clean aesthetic" that became hot in the mid-late 2000s. I don't hate it, but can see how its blandness can turn people off. Concord Mills definitely looks bustling, which is refreshing considering how some other Mills properties have done. What are the links to Rhys and Bathimers' channel(s)?
I went there back in 2015-ish. Doesn’t seem like a whole lot has changed since then. I visited the LEGO store there and snagged myself a Palace Cinema. There was an abandoned Quaker Steak & Lube nearby.
Simon owns Southridge in Milwaukee and I have filmed at Southridge a couple times and I agree with you the sterile hospital look is not visually pleasing
One of my favorites but only been twice since 2015. I made sure i took A LOT of pics and it was a good thing i did. Same thing for Katy Mills before it got redone too. I LOVE the theming of the Mills malls of the past.
I always loved going to that mall. I even remember when my dad took me and my sister there to see my cousin Gabi working at one of the stores called Bose.
Great video, very good quality I love this area of the Charlotte Metro, it has changed so much since I left Charlotte in the late '90s, so I shared it on my Facebook. I will be looking for future videos; thanks...
Excited to see this mall come up! I showed the video to my mom to reminisce over a trip we took to Charlotte a few years ago and went to this mall. Also excited to be seeing Northlake and Carolina Place for the same reasons! Have you gone to South Park also in Charlotte? It's pretty cool, all designer stores basically! Though I'd assume security would be way more strict with filming.
The Bed Bath & Beyond which was near the main entrance has since closed. A flyover allowing better access to the mall from I-85 recently opened. This should help alleviate the traffic in the area you mentioned which continues to be a problem. It can take up to 15 minutes just to enter the mall property and park on the weekends... Management has put a weekend curfew into place that bars anyone under 16 from entering without an adult on Saturdays and Sundays after 3 PM. Incidents of crime had been on the up-tick, usually blamed on fighting teenage groups. As long as they can keep a handle on crime, this mall should continue to do well.
The TGMaxx/Homegoods closed up shop and moved to the old Toys R Us across the street. Weird to see that section of the mall without an anchor now. Also, there’s a Bass Pro Shops in Cary, so not North Carolina’s only Bass Pro Shops :)
Katy Mills near Houston was changed to this look in 2018. I really dislike this bland look. The floors have all been changed except for the restroom areas. For some reason they did not improve the beat up restrooms with the mall remodel. I would think that is a no-brainer, but then again they decided this bland look is what people like.
TheL&TRetailblogspot BlogMan ive spent literally 8 hours at Katy Mills and ive glad i took a lot of pics. Katy had like a Star Family theme and I loved it.
@@MrJamieBattle I have photos from my old camera. I wish I would have gone back to get that area by the AMC that had all of the neon. The mall looks so plain now.
@Aimee Webber 😣 Exactly ! I haven't been to that dump since November 2017 and won't ever return !! Too many teens running wild and the security is so bad !!!
This mall is huge! Concord Mills seems to the most successful mills mall that's anywhere near close to me. I'd love to visit someday not just the mall, but Charlotte in general. Concord Mills, SouthPark, and Carolina Place seem to be the top three malls in the area. It'd be awesome if someday you'd film the small nearby Carolina Mall. Though a small town mall in configuration it seems to do very well. Its Sears lasted a long time before closing and the all features some of the best stores you'll ever find in a small mall.
Around 10:00 is when things start to get good. A Simon-esque ceiling over colorful walls and storefronts. A marriage of both ideas. I don't care for one look over the other, but I do like the synergism at play here.
Ah! Another mall I remember (vaguely) about during my short stay in Charlotte in ‘99! Also, Eastland mall (of course, that’s gone!) (SouthPark Mall is still awesome.)
I definitely agree that the Simon style is boring i much rather the more Nickelodeon/ PBS Kids styled ones where they were all kid friendly enjoyable for many shoppers. Thankfully I live in Georgia and we love going to Sugarloaf Mills and surprisingly it was bought by Simon but it’s still has a fair amount of its color left even the food court still is decent. They sadly got rid of the welcome neighborhood signs on the ceilings and I remember when it was called Discover Mills and it being super colorful. I’m honestly surprised the Simon never bleached out the mall yet, and I’m glad they didn’t. Trust me I saw old pictures of Concord Mills and I felt so bad for it. It looked like fun to go to. Anyways awesome video dude I hope Simon didn’t bleach all of the malls like this one.
I know, right? Whenever I have visited the particular mall when they were remodeling, I was furious at the destruction of what made Concord Mills a fun mall to shop and walk around at!
Unpopular opinion but if I had a choice between the old 80s aesthetic and the "quirky" aesthetics of the Mills malls I always preferred the latter. My local mall (Great Lakes Crossing Outlets) was originslly pitched as a Mills mall but was downsized yet it still has nice "neighborhood" aesthetic like a Mills though. :)
this past christmas shopping season was the first for me to notice that our mall didnt have every single space filled with some sort of shop, even the center walking areas would be back to back island booths with cellphone case shops or whatever. It was actually very noticeable , I also noticed that most days the amount of people there was not the same level as previous years...and this mall is in a heavily populated shopping hub... once the anchor stores leave I fear it will be a thing of the past
Is it wrong to be feel neutral about the mall appearance? Like I love the colorful kinda 80's/90's looks for the nostalgia childhood feels, but the modern more... upscale look many places are doing now doesn't bother me either. Look at Target stores. They've really tried to make themselves look more upscale and trendy than they used to be. Doesn't mean it changes the clientele, but it makes those that shop there FEEL like they're shopping in a more upscale business than they otherwise would. I hope that makes sense in a way. Really though, I guess it's a change with the times kinda thing. What looked good decades ago, does not for the modern shoppers and so on.
I enjoyed the video. I did not like the mall because I did not see any sit down restaurants which I enjoy. I hate food eating at the food court. I do think that the video should have had a walk thru in it since that seemed to be the only dining option available. The mall is not colorful or attractive at all.
At one time there was a Chili's Express at one end of the food court. It's long gone. Now there are some outparcel restaurants on the front side of the mall, but still no sit down eateries inside the mall.

This brings back soooo much nostalgia
I love Concord mills. Glad to see it is still looking good.
Bad place to be, a girl was murdered there and I haven't been to that hell hole since Nov. 2017.
That mall has gone to the *dogs*
Until they stat shooting
Good night love and miss
Because the world was a little too small

Opry Mills in Nashville TN is a success.
Most of the Mills mall are the sole exceptions were St Louis and Cincinnati.
Nice mall.. The food court looked huge too. I wish you showed more of it... for some reason I'm curious to know what food places are in these malls 😂
Simon owns Southridge in Milwaukee and I have filmed at Southridge a couple times and I agree with you the sterile hospital look is not visually pleasing

Most of the girls walking around in this mall have nice legs. This mall will now be know as the "nice legs mall."
👌🤣
I always loved going to that mall. I even remember when my dad took me and my sister there to see my cousin Gabi working at one of the stores called Bose.

I think simon believes that bland look is elegant and upscale looking.
Excited to see this mall come up! I showed the video to my mom to reminisce over a trip we took to Charlotte a few years ago and went to this mall. Fighting teenage groups aka the usual suspects. They have turned a once popular mall where I am(Citadel Mall/SC) into a ghostown.
I love that mall been there a few times. But I have heard the crime there on weekends is bad! Have you heard that as well??
@Kristy Marie well dang that sucks. I get tired of the bad kids though
@Kristy Marie oh yeah. Concord Mills has all my fav stores when I come visit they need the curefew law there though
@Kristy Marie oh yeah I need to check out northlake when I come visit next month
@Mindful Relaxation
👍 Agree, I'm a former employee too and quit for my safety. The security lets these thugs run wild. Seen it *too many times*
It's improving now with increased security and youth curfews but... I have read that this mall remains a hot spot for human trafficking.
That Bass pro store front looks pretty awesome!
The TGMaxx/Homegoods closed up shop and moved to the old Toys R Us across the street. Weird to see that section of the mall without an anchor now.

Haven't been to this mall in over 10 years. Hopefully I will be able to revist it soon.
I went to this mall in October of 2023 with my best friend.
I absolutely love the early 2000’s mills designs. It’s a shame how Simon bleached and destroyed almost all the mills malls
This mall is huge! Concord Mills seems to the most successful mills mall that's anywhere near close to me. I'd love to visit someday not just the mall, but Charlotte in general. South park and Concord are def my favorite places to shop!
Nice job! The decor is not likable or hatable is kinda just there. The storefronts definitely stick out and pop with excitement.

I totally prefer the former colourful design, I hate it when Simon whitewash malls they acquire, it’s like they want a depressing look?
I know, right? Whenever I have visited the particular mall when they were remodeling, I was furious at the destruction of what made Concord Mills a fun mall to shop and walk around at!
personally I like the less colorful look...
Gurnee Mills in Illinois used to be hopping like this. I haven't been in 10 years, but I imagine it's kinda dead.
Gurnee Mills seems to be thriving. There's only one major vacancy which was the Sears
This mall used to be so much more colorful I have no idea what happened to it.
Now it looks plain and dead
Unpopular opinion but if I had a choice between the old 80s aesthetic and the "quirky" aesthetics of the Mills malls I always preferred the latter. i really like that colorful quirky aesthetics. I really liked the neighborhood thing as well sadly everything now looks whitewashed

Concord Mills opened in 1999 and remodeled in 2020 or 2019
R.i.p Best Buy.
Good video. Thanks.
Hello Nancy
How are you doing today?
They edited this mall sooo much

Hello Sherry
How are you doing today?
I have been to the lego store here 2 times!
Been there when I lived in Charlotte.
Did you like living in Charlotte
I like the Ninininininininick Nickelodeon look color and fun memories of good time
this looks ike opry mills in tennessee
Watch out for her bat wings.
Bleach Mills
Simon bleached it all, made it bland!
@Aimee Webber You are correct :D
Early 2000's was all about loud and vibrant colors. I miss the way it looked, kind of boring now.
almost every mall in charlotte is good if not all
I live in Charlotte!
Simon malls are great 👍

I would pick the simon, Its more nicer
Chambersburg Mall is a dead mall
You can't say bleaching Mills malls is all bad. The Technicolor vomit they started with looks pretty dated at best, and truly horrendous at worst.
Heavily agree
Hope ye are not filming Simon’s bleach and hulls hallways they are both boring I prefer Aesthetically pleasing malls
Agreed on the bleach & boring. Is why I try to spread those out if I can help it.
all the talking by Bathimers & Rhys in the background is annoying
