I went to this mall every Saturday 1976-1983, they were closed Sundays until '85. Fell in love here, got my heart broke, made life long friends here and fooled around in the overflow lot across the creek behind the mall. Good times back then, crazy times. The places to hang were the Orange Bowl , Chess King and the Sears had a video game room that was awesome. Thanks, great post.
Can't believe you mentioned Lake Crabtree. I worked there for nearly fifteen years. It's a county park open to the public. I actually started working there before the lake was filled. The lake helped some with flooding, but hurricanes etc were too much for it to handle. The park was closed for almost a year because of damage from Hurricane Fran. I didn't know Crabtree Mall was still open. I haven't been there in over twenty years. It was a great place to visit back in the late 70s on up.
From what I recall it was building equipment (forklift etc.) that made the sound of a gunshot and everyone assumed. I live in Raleigh and I go here quite often. I love Crabtree so much, so many memories.
I think someone yelled GUN!!, & stupid people fell for it causing mass panic. Far as the mall, it will be cool to see if and when the tower gets built.
@Aimee Webber Yep same type of F'tards who call in bomb threats to a school from an anonymous phone number, and think it's funny because it gets them out of school for a day or two until someone rats them out, and they get sent to jail.
I live about 15 min from this mall, prob one of the busier malls I've ever been to and I don't see it dying anytime soon. With Cary Towne Center on its way out, I suspect it will only get busier. About 2 years ago there was a flood during some heavy rain when the creek flowed over and it put the bottom parking deck under water up to your stomach. Unfortunately my car was down there and was totaled in the flood, but you live you learn :)
@@DoomieGruntVentures Luckily it covered natural disasters but I was still paying it off so they only paid off what I owed so I essentially just reset my vehicle loan after getting a new car lol
I used to go there with my wife and young children 2001-2006. We moved to another state, but I went back for a visit a few years ago. I always enjoyed this mall.
I love the interior of this mall! A lot of the aesthetics remind me of the Burlington Mall where the movie “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” was shot. Only thing that would make it better is if it had some fountains. Glad to see that regardless of the flooding and panic history it seems to do very well for itself. As for the 2016 panic, I’m betting someone called in a shooting threat that was bogus.
Moved here in 1974 as a kid and this was "bike riding" distance from my house. GC Murphy had a huge arcade in the 80s (and was the closest to the creek and would flood or nearly so during every rain). Upstairs from them was a Piano and Organ store, a Burger King with a cool 70s fountain with red lights, and an old school pet store - like with animals not just pet supplies. There was even a movie theater with two screens in that outlying building where Best Buy is (theater was on the far side next to the current Mexican restaurant). Schiano's pizza was the best in the area and always packed - Kanki is in that spot now. Dunkin Donuts had a location there too and you could get in really early in the morning even before the mall itself was open - it was really neat. The entire area looks completely different now. This place is in no fear of "dying" like so many other malls. Oh and the "gunshots" were in the food court. There's video on RUclips from as person filming their kid on a little kiddie ride when it happened. Just a popping sound then, because this is America, mass panic. A friend of mine was there, downstairs, and saw all the people running. So he went straight out then around to his car and got out before the lock down. Just another regular day in the US.
That Burger KIng was great, really out of the way back in those brick arches! Great magazine store. I knew the owners of Kanki's daughter. I think her name was Kelly. She was killed in a car accident coming back from the beach in '81 I think. Trans Am.
I remember when ground was broken for this mall. It was quite a undertaking and its placement next to crabtree creek questioned. Kid Brewer and a few others made some shady lands deals to make it happen. We had an unusually wet summer one year (it was around 1974 if I recall correctly) and the creek rose and flooded the first floor. The mall was closed for several weeks.
I live about 2 hours from the mall too. Seems like every time I have to evacuate from a hurricane, I make a stop here. After all, it has the only Steak Escape in the state. LOVE their chicken cheese steaks.
I have so many wonderful memories of Crabtree. My family and I would go there a lot when I was a kid. I remember the Thalhimers, Sears and when they put the food court in, as well as eating at the Piccadilly Cafeteria.
This was the last mall we hit in the Raleigh area on our recent trip. Of the three lively malls we visited, this was our least favorite. It was still very nice, but not up to the level of Streets at Southpoint ot Triangle Town Center. It's also only the second mall we've ever been to that has TWO Bath & Body Works, the other being Hanes Mall. I also have to mention the tile work in the intersections of the mall. Very nice! Oh, and my conspiracy theory on the "gun shots" is that someone from a competing mall did it to drive customers to their mall. Well, not really but the mall biz can be cut-throat sometimes! Thanks again for your hard work. If you ever need any scouting work in the Charlotte area let me know. My girl loves to shop and we hit our local malls on the regular. Take care Doomie!
I kind of wish that the expansion on the Sears site would include a relocated Saks Fifth Avenue, and a block of high-end shops leading up to it, as it's a better fit for this mall than Triangle Town Center.
The mass panic was in the food court area. They from time to time have plastic trash push carts that they push while collecting trash. An employee slammed one of the empty carts into a door or wall and an unsuspecting patron equated this to the sound of a gun shot thus sparking a bout of mass hysteria
I live 10 minutes down the street from Crabtree. This mall is not going anywhere lol. It's a zoo if you try and go on the weekends or after 5pm on weekdays.
My mom actually worked at Pottery Barn when the parking deck floods happened. Luckily she parked in an area that was not flooded. Crabtree is very active and lots of people go on the weekends. I don’t see Crabtree closing, unlike Triangle Town Center which is definitely going under soon. Also this information is all on Wikipedia!
Don't forget what happened with Build A Bear: your age determines the price. It'll be fun they said. THOUSANDS of people showed up. 10,000, I do believe. We waited an hour with 6 kids and determined they were going to run out of bears. We left. They did run out.
WE WERE THERE! I came to the same conclusion. I was there with 2 of my daughters and 9 kids. I said they gonna run out and we went to Leggo store, Disney, Claire's and the Food Court. Yes. It'll be fun they said! NOT!
Omg. The thing that stands out the most to me about this mall is that railing! It is absolutely regal! Just classy and gorgeous! I'm digging the skylights too. They're not overdone, but they're big and bright. Crabtree Valley has always been a good mall but it has continually improved over the past five years or so. All of the higher-end tenants are found here now and Crabtree Valley has become even better than the Streets at Southpoint in Durham. This mall is just under-anchored though, so those looking for department store variety will not find it here. I wish Nordstrom or Von Maur would open here. This is the top mall in the entire Research Triangle and it sucks that it doesn't have a true upscale anchor anymore since Lord & Taylor left yearrrs ago.

I remember when NC State won the tournament in 83. This place was like a packed arena with all the State goods and people. It was full of suburban life for the longest time. It has changed just like Raleigh has in terms of demographics. The new Durham. Now it is just dead.
Ah yes, my childhood Mall! I can’t count how many times I’ve been to this mall. Pacific Retail is doing a good job maintaining the mall, even though the mall was put up for sale a year ago. They did update Crabtree however, as all of the pendant lights in the mall are all gone now, making the mall more bland. They also shortened the name to just simply “Crabtree”.
My sister loves to go to Khanki for her birthday each year at this mall; BTW, if you want to check out a really dead NC mall, have you thought of checking out/making a video about South Hills?

If you could see how popular this place was in the 80s and 90s compared to now, you would see its dead. Even on Saturday mornings now days its empty. The riff raff customer base has made this place very unnattractive and it is basically empty. Sears has this big wing and its just an empty area now. It will never make it back.
Crabtree is great for Pokemon Go. Currently seeing if I can spot one of us regulars doing a lap or two there in the video. Community day always being on a weekend makes the mall as packed as ever.
