oh my god, thank you. the “peeling” motion makes so much sense- i always used to just slam two stacks of cards together and hope that they slotted into the gaps in the other one- obviously, it hardly ever worked
I feel like such an idiot. XD I've been doing magic for 10 years and I just figured out recently that I've been doing the overhand shuffle backwards this entire time...
Thank you so much for this helpful video. I found it easy to assume the position for holding the cards and quickly felt more confident using this technique. Thank you!
Though this may seem stupid but many peole still dont know how to shuffle cards. Btw, almost no one in my country would do an overhand shuffle if they were playing cards. Hindu shuffle is the most popular form. When I was younger I only knew the Hindu shuffle. Only when I was exposed to magic did I know other types of shuffles
I used to shuffle my cards like this all the time, then I learned how to faro shuffle and never went back, kind of like drugs (I don't do drugs for the record. Magic is my anti-drug!), great tutorial as always!
I do a bit better starting with opposite hands. Trying to learn both directions while my hands are about equally clumsy. I guess its ok to go either way. It's like learning to juggle. Move slow slow slow and eventually you find your own rhythm.
yeah i have this problem too (i learnt the overhand shuffle like 10 mins ago), but i realized that you should peel the cards differently. I can't really explain it, but slow the video down and look at the way he peels cards off with his thumb. You shouldn't apply pressure on the back of the cards cuz that creates a tail, but u should place your thumb on the right edge, next to your right index finger, and peel the cards from there (i know im late, but I hope you understand what I mean and i hope this helped)
About the right hand position, where is the pack in relation to the fingers? I currently have it between where my thumb bends and between the first and second phalanges of my middle and ring fingers, but this looks a lot deeper than the grip you have. Thoughts on proper right hand position (or if it even matters at all)?
Got the book Royal Road to Card Magic because other sleight of hand content creators advised it, but damn that book is so cryptic I had no idea what to do with even the first section (overhand shuffle). Have to look up a video to understand what to do. This book sucks. Ugh.
This is actually NOT a very good way to shuffle from what I've read: "Persi Diaconis is a mathematician who has been studying card shuffling for over 25 years. Together with Dave Bayer, he worked out that to produce a mathematically random pack, you need to use a riffle shuffle 7 times...[whereas] the overhand shuffle, by comparison, requires 10,000 shuffles to achieve randomness." It is still a very cool way to shuffle cards and at least I know how to do it now.
10,000 sounds like a hyperbole, but it does indeed take more side shuffles. Problem with riffle is that it causes cards to bend and fold. Riffle is fine for your standard playing cards, where you can easily replace a deck, not so fine for cards to board games or trading card games (TCG's). For the latter two it's best to do a combination of pile shuffle and side/over hand. Pile shuffle helps separate cards, then a side shuffle randomizes. Randomize in this context means you or others cannot determine the order of the deck. It's a good idea to pile shuffle and side shuffle at least 3 times (that is, 1 pile shuffle and 1 side shuffle counts as 1). In this case you separate clusters of cards, and then randomize them, without damaging them. Perfect for any deck of cards that needs to last a long time.
God I love old RUclips videos. Straight to the point and was perfect
there are faster videos than thus
I like how he made the thumbnail for modern audiences lmao

I had to do it the opposite way but it helped heaps, thanks!
I tried this with a new deck of cards and still got sequences where it obviously hadn't shuffled. Not convinced this is the best method tbh.
@gunperry
Yeah, I don't know when though. I'm going to be busy so it could be a few weeks before it's uploaded.
How come that after all these 16 years of trying to shuffle cards this video of 1:55 minutes made me a master of shuffling cards in under 5 minutes
How do I prevent my cards from spreading out and tilting?

@MagicZack24 ok thanks
I can't even fit my fingers all the way around the cards I'm using tarot cards by the way and I am absolutely terrible at shuffling :(
I have an impression that shuffle would only change the order of the cards

being last is the real challenge

My how life as shuffling was a lie :D I used to just throw the at my left hand and only using my dumb to catch and control :D

Why does everyone shuffling cards have massive hands how the fuck can I do this with small hands someone help oh dear god I'm so frustrated rn
god iv,e bin doing it wrong for over seven years.
My hands aren’t big enough :-( much sad
Fuck dude this is hard
the 303th viewer is handsome
Poker buddies in the military called it the cheater's shuffle
I tried this and now the girl I'm dating thinks I'm stupid. Not happy 🤬
Girls only want boyfriends with great skills. Duh
It's not even a good shuffle because all you do is split the deck and move it in a fancy way. You basically put the middle of the deck in the front.
Lefthand hardly moves at all. Me being left handed
You just do it in reverse lol
