  • If you want fruit with an interesting twist, get pineberries! Ours have really started bearing heavily this year and we love the sour kick of their pineapple flavor! They are great fresh and they make excellent jam. If you do decide to grow these, make sure and have another variety nearby for optimal pollination.

    I found pineberries at Costco and was able to germinate the seeds. I am sooo very proud of myself. It took me 4-5 tries but i did it! Although it takes two years to get berries. I finally got berries this year and can’t wait to try them and see what they taste like. So far, The berries look exactly like the pine berries I bought a couple of years ago!😁

    They are totally worth growing, you’ll never find them in a store and rarely at a farmers market.

    I'm currently growing some of these from seed in a hydroponics unit. Everyone says they're a hybrid, so I don't expect them to grow true but I'm excited to see what happens. They have about 4 leaves so far.

    Don't we have to freeze the seeds first to fool them into thinking they just survived a winter and therefore germinate?

    • @HonestHomesteading
      @HonestHomesteading  2 года назад +1

      Yes, they need to be stratified to germinate. I've not done that with strawberries/pineberries specifically, but generally putting them in the refrigerator for a month will be sufficient to fulfill that "winter" need. Good luck!

    My daughter bought 3 of these plants and I have already transplant over 100 new plants and they are still producing baby plants. I keep cutting them and so far only 1 little white strawberry. We’ll see how it goes.

      They need cross pollinators to grow fruits, so plant some regular strawberries nearby. Growing fruit would reduce the amount of runners.

  • @dart336
    @dart336 5 месяцев назад

    They taste like pineapple because they share the natural gene that creates the enzyme found in pineapples

    I bought some plants and got some berries that was mushy too. I removed all that plants and restarted from seeds from the berries I bought that have better texture. Not sure it would succeed from seeds since they are hybrids.

  • @syhu5456
    @syhu5456 Год назад +1

    You grow them on the ground, is it okay for winter frozen time? Are there insects or animal around?

    • @HonestHomesteading
      @HonestHomesteading  Год назад

      Yup! They don't have any issue with winter temperatures here even though we get down to about -15 F at the coldest most years. Once freezing temperatures have started, you can mulch them with straw, or fallen leaves to insulate them, but I haven't found that to be strictly necessary. In the spring, once flowers form, you have to watch out for freezes to ensure they don't hurt the crop. I made a video on that as well!

    • @HonestHomesteading
      @HonestHomesteading  Год назад

      We've only had issues with birds, but they don't bother them enough to be worth fighting off. Bird netting has helped us in the past, but it is a pain to set up and take down.

    Hello what do you fertilize your pineberries with!!!

    • @HonestHomesteading
      @HonestHomesteading  8 месяцев назад +2

      To date, we have only fertilized our pineberries and strawberries with a dressing of finished compost. For using standard fertilizer, I'd recommend getting your soil tested, so you only add what you know you need! You'll probably want a different mix in the spring when they want to fruit compared to after harvest. Hope this helps!

      I do not have any myself, but I've seen that there are varieties of white strawberry as well that do not have the pineapple flavor. It could be that yours order was mixed up, or maybe they just weren't ripe enough? All the ones we have had so far had a very distinctive taste.

    where can I buy a tree that will allow me to harvest first year? how long does it take

    • @HonestHomesteading
      @HonestHomesteading  2 года назад +1

      Pineberries don't grow on trees, but they are becoming more commonly found at nurseries, so it shouldn't be too hard. If you mean fruit trees in general, figs can bear in their first year. Most fruit varieties take many years to develop fruit wood. If you are at a nursery or garden center at a grocery store, look for trees with blooms or little fruitlets and that will let you know if they are already at bearing age. They often are when sold locally, though it will be a light first crop.
