- It’s estimated that just after the Civil War, one in four cowboys were African American. In his series ‘Delta Hill Riders’, photographer Rory Doyle takes us inside the often overlooked black cowboy culture within the Mississippi Delta, challenging one of America's greatest myths surrounding the Wild West.

I remember being a kid in Mississippi and the way it was seeing the Black cowboys ride thru. Everyone would always stop and stare and everyone showed respect. That was the custom. Its majestic and powerful. 🐎🌳💕🌹
Good on you, Rory Doyle, and thank you for making this video, BBC!
Go figure- a BBC documentary!! So glad to hear about the cowboy/horse culture
in the southeast and across the nation!!
This is a wonderful documentary short! Definitely shows the experiences of my childhood with my dad and uncles. We ride for the love of the animals and the freedom!
Thank you 🙏🏿 for this ☺️
I 💕 the history, the culture, the American people of beauty respect n understanding. I rode horses when I was younger n had my son n daughter enjoy the horses too. I'm 63 now but I still admire my people staying with the culture
Awesome pictures. Awesome project!!! Love it
APTTMHGOI I live in Mount Olive,MS. and that is a black culture here and has always been. We know how Esau puts his name on everything that Jacob does. My spiritual family will understand what I have said but there is corrections taking place. Be safe and Bless ALL!!!

the first person I remembered talking about black cowboys was Sammy Davis Jr.
The original black cowboys of Mississippi are in canton, Sharon and the native Americans in Yazoo city thats all me baby
There's also report of Southern Native American cowboys 🤠 hailing from Mississippi (Choctaw natives among others )
A lot of these so called blacks are the Choctaw you can clearly see the culture in them.
The original cowboys were black !!
I was actually thinking about bass reeves when I was watching this video lol
True
YAWL better come on and tell it like it IS!!!!. Its BRANDED IN US.
Black Cowboys via The White Gaze. C'mon, BBC... Do Better!! Rory speaks of collecting oral histories; yet, the Black voices are muted here!!
right, like…
Thank you
Thank you for sharing this post of what you know about Black Cowboys. But it should be black people telling this story. But that’s how blacks are in a whole. We never put out information of our own people, like he’s doing😢✊🏽
Trail riders and cowboys differences between the two
Number one white men where referred to as cowhands …..black men where referred to as cowboys .
Fuccin right 💪💪.
*I WANNA BE A COWBOY!*
Follow your dreams
Who didn’t know there was black cowboys? It’s a job, any race can do a job.
Emcstea I’m a fifth generation rancher. Thought everyone knew that. Didn’t reckon I was whitewashing. Whatever the hell that means.
Hollywood didnt know it was black cowboys . None of the wild west movies depicted the truth. Its a stolen heritage . When I see whites claiming cowboy culture and the name , it's a lie . All the western stores dedicated to this persona was enamored by the black cowboy stories , then not giving them any credit.
The orignal cowboys and indians were not white men pursuing indians but rather natives and freed slaves, when the freed slaves lived on indian reservations and were taught how to ride .
Duh!
You are not ncluding Spanish-Mexicans???
When a person thinks of a cowboy, they think of someone that is either white, or Hispanics. Black Cowboys were ignored in Hollywood, as well as the history books.
Give my country owner kohinoor
The bbc isnt here to give u anything
They aren’t cowboys. We don’t raise cattle in the delta.
What a loud of rubbish. I think they make this stuff up.
You're right because the original cowboys were black. You know how racists call black men "boys", so the black men who were doing this were called "cowboys" and of course the whole culture was later dominated by whites just like country music.
@@NuCreechure Incorrect. The cowboy tradition has it's roots in the Iberian peninsular where they are known as vaqueros. This was brought to Mexico by the Spanish and then to North America.
Rudoff Hess I guess the American Indians didn't ride horses until white people showed up.
@@missginger8896 They didn’t, because they didn’t have horses unless Europeans reintroduced them
@@NuCreechure WE WUZ COWBOYZ
