It is important to tell, share, and spread Black History. Too much intentionally hidden and misrepresented. I knew Black cowboys existed (not many) through the oral tradition of the Legends.
I sure hope my 4th grade teacher is still alive to see this. She called me a liar, and tried to get me suspended from school when I mentioned that my uncles in Texas, were cowboys! Obviously teachers in this Country haven't gotten much better in 50 years!!
Born and raised in Baltimore, I've always had a deep appreciation for cowboy movies and outdoor life. My father taught me the truth about history, so I've always enjoyed enlightening people about who cowboys really were. Kids from metropolitan cities need first hand experiences with these historians and professional cowboys for enrichment and motivation.
I found this after watching 1883 (Yellowstone). There's a black cowboy on the show and it made me start thinking that most likely there were black cowboys and I thought it would be interesting to look into. Wouldn't it be cool if there could be a Yellowstone type show with black cowboys showing their take on things from back then. Thanks for the info. and documentary.
There are probably still Black Rodeos, and the black cowboys records were substantially better, which is another reason they have always been banned from the white rodeos today, and another reason I never attend them, no matter how many times they come to my city!!
There a book i read in college called the black the red and the deadly that turned me on to the fact in old west 1out 3 cowboys were black,some of them escaped slavery but some played a part in myan civilization theres very old statues of obvious black men along with the myan people ,the power that be changed history some blacks are native to America
I'm a 60 year old black man and I remember about 30 years ago I went to a black rodeo in Sacramento California and I thought what I was seeing was something that wasn't really normal and to an extent I was right but now it watching this I realize it was more normal than I thought. I asked a question what else don't we know about black history?

Wow...at 1:48 min he is telling the truth. On a visit to the gas station on a trip to Miami saw this 6'4 lumber jack dressed dark skinned black one in boots, jeans and all. This 10 year old kid walked up to him and asked in awe are you a real cowboy. He was so thrilled to receive the answer of yes...heavy country accent and all..LOLOL. I very much felt touched by the prayer at the end and felt very special watching this video.....the Lord was with these men the whole time.
Cowboys come from Chihuahua and many states of the north of Mexico. Besides, many southern states of the current US were part of Mexico. We gave to the US something of our diverse culture.
Very proud of these cowboys! My family is native american Indian and we come from a cowboy heritage. I think its pretty neat how we share similarities overcoming hardships in our pasts. Living the western lifestyle is not for the weak and for the ones who can do it, i give them mad respect! Thanks for sharing video!

When tribes/indigenous peoples to the Americas first saw horses we were very fascinated! My own tribe up here in oregon initially thought they were giant dogs, and named them so. That's what I was referring to when I said my people have had horses in our lives ever since explorers and conquerors and settlers begin loving into the northwest of the United states. We still have stories of fighting horseback and u.s. military couldn't defeat us so they enlisted help of our enemy tribes that helped them fight us. Anyhow I have high respect for vaqueros and Spanish influence. I always read/watch stories of their history! Up her we have the Pendleton round up where they showcase history of black/white/Indian ride off and I feel they should kncldie spanish/Mexican rider to show their skills!! These days I use horses on my cattle ranch. Occasionally we will use them for Indian events like parades and maybe to hunt (with guns, not bows and arrows hahaha). Long ago we'd use them for rodeos where I'd rope in team roping/calf roping/steer wrestling. Then when I was a teen I'd ride bulls and bare backs. Many people never knew that "The LONE RANGER" was based on Bass Reeve who was deputized by the Hanging judge. He also had an Indian friend that was like a brother to him!
Mexican Vaqueros from California taught white dudes the cowboy life....I guess it trickled down to Black men Also.....The king of Hawaii hired Mexican Vaqueros from California back in the 1830s to teach them to round up and tend to the wild herds of cattle in Hawaii....They all stayed in Hawaii and their descendants are the Paniolos of today....I am glad my People had a large part in creating this lifestyle.

Thank you very much for making this documentary available to the public. We have had some legendary working ranch black cowboys in the Texas Panhandle, some of them formerly was called buffalo soldiers. Alas, they are all gone and few stories were recorded in print and photos for the historical record. I have been hunting for some old timers who can tell second-hand and first-hand stories of their own.
My love of everything cowboy is based in large part on their character. Thank you for showing me / us more to history than I knew. Your character has influenced me even further. Thank you gentlemen.
We found this because we're engrossed in Yellowstone (Kevin Costner) and curious about rodeos and cowboys. As a northern city dweller, I'm not sure I'll ever make it to a rodeo, but what an articulate and refined group of gentlemen in smart shirts and hats. And yeah, let's get racism gone already.

Historical Fact: [Both black folks and white southerners learned to cowboy from the Mexicans in Texas both before and after the Civil War.] We just didn't get to see it in the movies thanks to racist Hollywood power brokers. I happen to come from a cowboy family in northern Mexico that has been cowboying for more than 12 generations in a span of over 300 years and the idea of black cowboys was even unknown to us in our neck of the woods. And in the words of my uncle spoken during a cattle drive: "I don't see how they glorify this (cowboying) in the movies. This is a cheap, dirty, and nasty business .... and it falls upon us to do it."
You're right about that, and my ancestors were forced to break the wild horses that the white men were afraid of! They learned a lot about horse handling from my Native American Ancestors as well, and they don't show that in the movies either!!

Cowboying with ropes/riatas/lassos, as well as their various uses, were developed in Mexico by the indigenous people and settlers who had to find new ways of doing things. This is why you didn't see other places like Argentina, Cuba, Panama, and other Spanish colonies, develop this type of work.

It’s cool that Black, White, Native American, Spanish, and Mexican people all have shared this same cowboy lifestyle overtime. Don’t know if I’m forgetting any other groups of people as well but it’s cool when diverse groups of people share similar history such as this. And I’ll admit I’m a white kid from North Idaho that’s never been near a rodeo even though we have a little bit of this culture up here but I have incredible respect for anyone that lived out this grueling, gritty, and tough but fulfilling lifestyle. After learning all this I’m gonna be even more pissed off at the fake cowboys I see that listen to shitty modern country music and act hard but that ain’t actually about this lifestyle 😂 Not to mention these people I’m referring to probably have no idea how diverse cowboy culture actually is

Yes spainards brought horses and cattle to America and were the first cowboys also the American Indian were cowboys but in spanish were called vaqueros. Spainards brought horses in 1492 and blacks learned after slavery ended in 1860s so in actually blacks were the last to know of horses.
African-American cowboys were never really forgotten, at least not in Texas. I saw them here in person as a kid in the 70s, portrayed in movies by actors Sidney Poitier, Woody Strode, Jim Brown, etc. and authors have written about Black cowboys in books for the last 110 + years. I think there is more of a regional, generational or cultural amnesia of these hard-working men and women, which needs to be overcome. They have been under-represented and respectfully depicted in history, literature, paintings, photography, early movies and especially TV shows. 65 years old now, show all of them in action in the 60's, and 70's. in Baileys Prairie, Kendleton, old Diamond L Ranch in Houston, Dickerson, and Egypt. Skeet was my favorite in the bull riding. Got to go to all them because my uncle Buster Jackson was the pickup man for the riders. This brought back a lot of memories.

Mexicans have been riding since 1492 when Christopher Columbus brought horses and cattle to America. Mexicans taught white men to ride and white men taught blacks. Whites learned how to ride in the 1800s

The first cowboys I saw were my Grandfather and uncle's saw whites dressed like cowboys as a young child it wasn't until I was a teenager that I actually saw whites working cattle and roping. Cowboy life for us wasn't the gear and clothes it was the job we did.

"Rodeo" is a Spanish word, and it has existed before any English speaker moved into spaniard territory. Taurine culture is Spanish European they introduced cattle to the American continent, on new Spain, and modified in Mexico, no white anglosaxon or black men created non of that but copied from Texas and Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Chihuahua, nuevo Mexico etc. I respect African Americans and their contributions to humanity but get your history right.

Sure is a beautiful documentary, very special to be a "Tx. Black Rancher's Granddaughter" for many years, he and Grandma raised their family of 9 off the land and hunting.... and my aunts and uncles always brought the next generation home for holidays! I still remember seeing all 5 uncles ride up with their "Deady" my Grandpa... I can still recall those wonderful healthy smells of a horse, cow, pig, chickens even kittens under the porch.... leather saddles, and sounds of boots walking cross hardwood floors while I was waiting for an opportunity to wear a brow sweat stained hat to see myself in Grandmas mirror. Grateful to have " Tx. Cowgirl Roots".... Amen

@kahlildopeboi dopeboimagic Oh yes we did. The hat, boots, western saddle, chaps, lasso techniques are from The Mexican Vaquero. The cowboy did not exist until late 1850 when they got the west and encounter the Vaquero. Even all the words are Spanish like Rodeo, Lasso, Lariat etc. We taught them how to ranch how to move cattle open range. All this non existing until you got to Mexican territories.

I am talking about the specific and unique way of cattle herding cowboys do. If you look at every culture, every one has its own unique way of doing things. Cattle herding in North America was an import from the Spanish conquistadors when they brought horses and cattle. But that Spanish way of herding was changed and developed into a different culture and a different way or herding. The way we do it know in the "western culture" comes from the Mestizo (Mexican). All these techniques and the tools and attires come from the Mexican Vaqueros and It is in history books. You don't have to believe me. Just do your own research. Even the word "Cowboy" is a direct translation to English from the Spanish word "Vaquero"

Very proud of these cowboys! My family is native american Indian and we come from a cowboy heritage. I think its pretty neat how we share similarities overcoming hardships in our pasts. Living the western lifestyle is not for the weak and for the ones who can do it, i give them mad respect! Thanks for sharing video!

When tribes/indigenous peoples to the Americas first saw horses we were very fascinated! My own tribe up here in oregon initially thought they were giant dogs, and named them so. That's what I was referring to when I said my people have had horses in our lives ever since explorers and conquerors and settlers begin loving into the northwest of the United states. We still have stories of fighting horseback and u.s. military couldn't defeat us so they enlisted help of our enemy tribes that helped them fight us.
Anyhow I have high respect for vaqueros and Spanish influence. I always read/watch stories of their history! Up her we have the Pendleton round up where they showcase history of black/white/Indian ride off and I feel they should kncldie spanish/Mexican rider to show their skills!!
These days I use horses on my cattle ranch. Occasionally we will use them for Indian events like parades and maybe to hunt (with guns, not bows and arrows hahaha). Long ago we'd use them for rodeos where I'd rope in team roping/calf roping/steer wrestling. Then when I was a teen I'd ride bulls and bare backs. I've broke a lot of horses and roped a few wild ones off the range!

Many people never knew that "The LONE RANGER" was based on Bass Reeve who was deputized by the Hanging judge. He also had an Indian friend that was like a brother to him!

Mexican Vaqueros from California taught white dudes the cowboy life....I guess it trickled down to Black men Also.....The king of Hawaii hired Mexican Vaqueros from California back in the 1830s to teach them to round up and tend to the wild herds of cattle in Hawaii....They all stayed in Hawaii and their descendants are the Paniolos of
today....I am glad my People had a large part in creating this lifestyle.

Thank you very much for making this documentary available to the public. We have had some legendary working ranch black cowboys in the Texas Panhandle, some of them formerly was called buffalo soldiers. Alas, they are all gone and few stories were recorded in print and photos for the historical record. I have been hunting for some old timers who can tell second-hand and first-hand stories of their own.

This is an awesome piece of history. My grandfather and grand uncle were both cowboys, working ranches and bronc busting in the early 1900s.
We found this because we're engrossed in Yellowstone (Kevin Costner) and curious about rodeos and cowboys. As a northern city dweller, I'm not sure I'll ever make it to a rodeo, but what an articulate and refined group of gentlemen in smart shirts and hats. And yeah, let's get racism gone already.

I happen to come from a cowboy family in northern Mexico that has been cowboying for more than 12 generations in a span of over 300 years and the idea of black cowboys was even unknown to us in our neck of the woods.
And in the words of my uncle spoken during a cattle drive: "I don't see how they glorify this (cowboying) in the movies. This is a cheap, dirty, and nasty business .... and it falls upon us to do it."

You're right about that, and my ancestors were forced to break the wild horses that the white men were afraid of! They learned a lot about horse handling from my Native American Ancestors as well, and they don't show that in the movies either!!

Cowboying with ropes/riatas/lassos, as well as their various uses, were developed in Mexico by the indigenous people and settlers who had to find new ways of doing things. This is why you didn't see other places like Argentina, Cuba, Panama, and other Spanish colonies, develop this type of work.

It’s cool that Black, White, Native American, Spanish, and Mexican people all have shared this same cowboy lifestyle overtime. Don’t know if I’m forgetting any other groups of people as well but it’s cool when diverse groups of people share similar history such as this. And I’ll admit I’m a white kid from North Idaho that’s never been near a rodeo even though we have a little bit of this culture up here but I have incredible respect for anyone that lived out this grueling, gritty, and tough but fulfilling lifestyle. After learning all this I’m gonna be even more pissed off at the fake cowboys I see that listen to shitty modern country music and act hard but that ain’t actually about this lifestyle 😂 Not to mention these people I’m referring to probably have no idea how diverse cowboy culture actually is

Yes spainards brought horses and cattle to America and were the first cowboys also the American Indian were cowboys but in spanish were called vaqueros. Spainards brought horses in 1492 and blacks learned after slavery ended in 1860s so in actually blacks were the last to know of horses.
African-American cowboys were never really forgotten, at least not in Texas. I saw them here in person as a kid in the 70s, portrayed in movies by actors Sidney Poitier, Woody Strode, Jim Brown, etc. and authors have written about Black cowboys in books for the last 110 + years. I think there is more of a regional, generational or cultural amnesia of these hard-working men and women, which needs to be overcome. They have been under-represented and respectfully depicted in history, literature, paintings, photography, early movies and especially TV shows. 65 years old now, show all of them in action in the 60's, and 70's. in Baileys Prairie, Kendleton, old Diamond L Ranch in Houston, Dickerson, and Egypt. Skeet was my favorite in the bull riding. Got to go to all them because my uncle Buster Jackson was the pickup man for the riders. This brought back a lot of memories.

The first cowboys I saw were my Grandfather and uncle's saw whites dressed like cowboys as a young child it wasn't until I was a teenager that I actually saw whites working cattle and roping. Cowboy life for us wasn't the gear and clothes it was the job we did.

"Rodeo" is a Spanish word, and it has existed before any English speaker moved into spaniard territory.
Taurine culture is Spanish European they introduced cattle to the American continent, on new Spain, and modified in Mexico, no white anglosaxon or black men created non of that but copied from Texas and Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Chihuahua, nuevo Mexico etc.

I have always felt like the odd one out even after 15 years in the horse world, but seeing things like this reminds me that horses are indeed in my blood.
Sure is a beautiful documentary, very special to be a "Tx. Black Rancher's Granddaughter" for many years, he and Grandma raised their family of 9 off the land and hunting.... and my aunts and uncles always brought the next generation home for holidays! I still remember seeing all 5 uncles ride up with their "Deady" my Grandpa...
I can still recall those wonderful healthy smells of a horse, cow, pig, chickens even kittens under the porch.... leather saddles, and sounds of boots walking cross hardwood floors while I was waiting for an opportunity to wear a brow sweat stained hat to see myself in Grandmas mirror. I'm almost 50 and white. Even though tv showed white cowboys, I knew there were black cowboys it just wasn't shown. To me it's just logical. I think every nationality ethnic group had a cowboy one time or another.

Honestly I think it depends on what time. You're talking about. These days showing history about different ethnic groups is very popular. However during the Heyday of the television cowboy it was not as popular to have a diversity of cast members.

I'm here because I have a history assignment but this video just gave more knowledge than I can ever ask for I too was taught and believed white men where the creators of the "cowboy" persona. my family being hispanic they love rodeos and horses they always go to the shows its amazing to now understand how all this falls into. Im just amazed and grateful to understand this history especially to know it was mostly African Americans, Mexican Americans and Native Americans who were cowboys. Im learning the History of Nat Love a legendary cowboy after the Reconstruction Era. thanks !!

@kahlildopeboi dopeboimagic Oh yes we did. The hat, boots, western saddle, chaps, lasso techniques are from The Mexican Vaquero. The cowboy did not exist until late 1850 when they got the west and encounter the Vaquero. Even all the words are Spanish like Rodeo, Lasso, Lariat etc. We taught them how to ranch how to move cattle open range. All this non existing until you got to Mexican territories.

I am talking about the specific and unique way of cattle herding cowboys do. If you look at every culture, every one has its own unique way of doing things. Cattle herding in North America was an import from the Spanish conquistadors when they brought horses and cattle. But that Spanish way of herding was changed and developed into a different culture and a different way or herding. The way we do it know in the "western culture" comes from the Mestizo (Mexican). All these techniques and the tools and attires come from the Mexican Vaqueros and It is in history books. You don't have to believe me. Just do your own research. Even the word "Cowboy" is a direct translation to English from the Spanish word "Vaquero"
