  • With a free boat, comes some problems for sure, but any good backyard mechanic can do this. This is why I had to change my Harmonic Balancer plus an explanation of how they work.
A harmonic balancer (sometimes called crankshaft damper, torsional damper, or vibration damper) is the same thing as a harmonic damper except that the balancer includes a counterweight to externally balance the rotating assembly. The harmonic balancer often serves as a pulley for the accessory drive belts turning the alternator, water pump and other crankshaft driven devices.
Each time a cylinder fires, the force of the combustion is pressed to the crankshaft rod journal. The rod journal deflects in a torsional motion to some degree under this force but harmonic vibrations will result from the torsional motion pressure on the crankshaft.
In some engines, the torsional motion of the crankshaft at certain speeds can synchronize with the harmonic vibrations, causing a resonance. In some cases the resonance may stress the crankshaft to the point of cracking or complete failure.
The harmonic balancer helps minimize torsional crankshaft harmonics and resonance. The damper is composed of two elements: an inertia mass and an energy dissipating element. Most often made of rubber, this element is composed of a synthetic elastomer, a clutch, a spring or fluid. The mass counteracts the torsional crank motions and in concert with the energy dissipating element absorbs the harmonics vibrations.
An OEM damper consists of an outer mass bonded/vulcanized to an inner hub. An aftermarket performance damper consists of a mass which is attached/mounted to a housing (steel, aluminum, titanium, etc.) based on the different types of damper and where the mass is controlled differently. The first three use older technology; First is the liquid type damper which surrounds the mass immersed in the housing which is then bonded or welded together. Second is the o-ring type which surrounds the mass with a number of o-rings as it sits in its housing. Third is the friction type which has clutches and spring acting on the mass inside the outer housing. Fourth is the newest type in which the mass sits over and is attached an elastomer ring which is then attached to the outer housing. The crankshaft and damper together become (in its torsional response) a spring-mass-damper system again which can only occur by the two being interference fit together.
Thanks for watching, stay well, and God Bless.
    Dave

Oorah, this improvising Marine diagnosed and replaced the out of sync Harmonic Balancer like a PhD. Great video Der Dave with all of the working parts and narrative like a NASA engineer working on Apollo 13. Because "Failure is Not an Option." It reminds me of your prop balancer that smoothed out every vibration so you could fly your Byron F-16. And thank God you found and repaired the fiberglass or your boat could have sprung a leak and would have been history. Yep, a job well done and thanks to Ilea for her being part of a well synchronized team. God bless you two, from Bud aka RktMan

Diagnosed that issue like an Ace.
    Loved your video & subscribed.
By the way, next time you need to support the front of the engine with 2x4’s, make sure to put them on edge instead of on face. They’re more structurally sound that way.

You do a great job with your vids and as I can see, with your life. Watching you bounce back from your fire has been inspiring. I found you through Ike's vid of a UP Challenger chugging to Sibley. Tama Co. here. Keep it up, Nightflyyer!

Interesting video and I learned something. I don't know much about boats, but I do know that there is always something to do. lol A Marine feels at home on the water and those 200 Bucks were well invested.

Never any mention of alignment to the out drive. You did some resin work down below the front motor mount, that could change alignment. Since you were into it, I’d want to check any way. But I do believe that would involve removing your outdrive and obtaining an alignment tool, which understandably is more work.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  Год назад

Never loosen the outdrive, never lifted the engine higher or lower and there is no alignment problem. In fact it is very smooth now. (had it out 2 days ago) and it is running perfect.

Great video! Thank you for posting. I have the same boat same motor and unfortunately most of the same problems starting with the water pump and I just finished replacing the head gasket. Smh... I noticed your customized alternator bracket. Can you explain? My alternator gets out of alignment and throws the belt

The Stock bracket kept breaking, so I Fabricated one that won't break. Now I know that it was the Harmonic Balancer that was causing it to break due to those vibes, but now with the new one and able to set the timing exactly, it is running great. Hope yours does too. Happy sailing and thanks for commenting.

I don't mean to get off topic..it's good you fixed your boat, but what would you do with a old gas air plan I found at work in the landfill..it has fishing line tied to it as they used a hand held device to fly it with. The old motor has MAX os 35 stamped on the side .really cool and old looking..I kinda want to fix it up and put electric on it .but should be in a museum I spose

Thanks. OS Max is a good engine. It must be a U control line airplane. I would try to keep it or fix it up. If it was in the land fill, there must be some damage. Good luck with that one.
