to me this song feels like its about a hopeless romantic. with so much love to give and nobody to give it to. creating scenarios that they feel will never happen.
Oh hey Max :) Great to see you here. Seems you have good taste in films ánd music! Your video's are a breath of fresh air on RUclips, thanks for doing what you do!
It can be. Most of the time it’s just been so good to me but I’ve had times especially recently where it hit me and it was surprisingly painful and dark while being good simultaneously when it hadn’t felt that way before. Probably because I was just more prone to it, not feeling as well.
I love how Ceilings is a deeply moving song that people relate to on a personal level in their relationships, and Lizzie is just like “yeah I wrote that cause the words sound cool and I like rain 🤪” haha
@@lexviolet You should listen to Melanie Martinez her lyrics might not look deep when you first listen to her until you read and analyse the lyrics separately!
@@lexviolet Same tbh. I thought there was going to be a really interesting personal reason behind the lyrics, and it turned out to just be her making something up cause it sounded good..
@@lexviolet just bc she didn't attach a whole lot of meaning doesn't mean you can't, there's something to be said about why people who write songs pick the words they do, that I don't think can be explained away easily; as a poet who regularly chooses words just bc they 'sound cool,' I feel like there is always some deeper driving me, even if I don't fully understand it; sometimes, I'll finish a poem and read through it and realize that that word I chose frivolously, actually adds to meaning I hadn't previously seen
To be fair as an artist , When a artist hides a their voice on the song it has little to do with the option on how , the artist wants the song to sound .
I have always interpreted this song as something dark. Like having to end something because you realized what you had wasn't real and that you had to let go despite how pretty the narrative your brain creates of the memories you had together. Idk...this song just hits me in my feels.
I understood "But it's not real / And you don't exist / And I can't recall the last time I was kissed" to mean the relationship is over and the other person isn't who she thought they were. She can't remember the last time she was kissed because her and the other person have drifted apart. Especially with the line changing from "feels like the start of a movie" to "feels like the end of a movie".
this is exactly how i interpreted it as well. especially the "but it's not real and you don't exist".. we idealize relationships and build a whole person out of someone's potential. v moving song
@Lyric Lust she says it in a lot of interviews the story is what it means to the listener. So you get to decide that. But tbh as a writer myself sometimes thats how songs start and they turn into stories without intending it.
@@jengalvin hey it's her song.. sometimes lyrics are just whatever you want them to be. not everything has to be sophisticated!! it can be random and unexpected.
at 1:29 she sings both parts of the harmony in the original song on "water". She doesn't stay on the one note she sings both which creates the illusion of her harmonising by herself. THIS IS MADNESS SHE'S SO GOOD
discovered Lizzy when she opened for Dodie last year...and what an experience. my brother and I were absolutely blown away by this amazing singer just absolutely hitting every single note so incredibly well. and her songwriting skills are like no one else I know!!!! so happy she's getting so much recognition. SLAY LIZZY!!!!!!!!!
As a person who relates to this music, i love how she describes the outro part, for her it's about something that she wanted to happen and she imagined in beginning when they met each other. For me, its like when you love the idea of someone more than them as themselves and when we realized and look back it comes with the *"but it's not real, and you don't exist"* lyric saying that all of the memories was not real and it was all only in our heads
so so proud of how far lizzy has come in such a short amount of time 😭 she’s incredibly talented and i’m so glad she’s getting the recognition she’s deserved
Lizzy is an amazing lyricist. Somehow these cool words that she comes up in her mind turn into such beautiful song lyrics. She deserves more recognition.
“hate to be lame” by her and finneas is AMAZING. i love how her first line is “it’s always on the tip of my tongue” and finneas’s first line is “it’s always in the back of my mind”
As I get older, it’s hard to find new music that makes me feel feelings. The first time I heard this song I cried. Even now it makes me cry. It’s wild. You got some talent girl.
I heard a song about a relationship you fantasize about having and wish you were experiencing - then something in life yanks you back to reality and you remember it never happened. But it was perfect it every way it could have been.
The way I gatekeep her music in 2020 😭 Lizzy I knew you're going to be big someday. I am so happy and proud of you. I loved your soothing voice since day 1. 🥺
I dont listen to mainstream solo artists, but she caught my attention when i saw her guitar skills. Turns out she writes and composes all her stuff, pretty rare for popular artists.
I interpreted it as a song for people who have had a love interest for a long time. They may or may not be friends with this person, and they've been wanting to tell them their feelings but didnt have the courage or the moment wasn't right... and then tragedy strikes... and that person is no longer here. You can't really turn to anyone to express your hurt because 1. No-one knows you had a crush because you never told anyone. 2. The love; the relationship you had didnt exist, so you feel ridiculous explaining what wasn't. You're kind of just left to stand outside in the rain alone.
Truly such a painfully beautiful song. Filled with endless hope and magic, but laced with such a beautiful melancholic melody. Even though the love story wasn’t real and she just imagined it all, it could become real after she meets someone, which she did. A song for all the hopeless romantics 🦋🤍
I hope her other songs from her latest album gets recognized too, Erase me, Reckless driving, Firearm, and What a shame are so good! I'd do anything to listen to them for the first time again!
I love that she explained this. There were some things that I hadn’t considered. I actually was introduced to her music through a cover done by cimorelli. Love her voice!
I came across this song just before my dad died, didn't pay much attention to it, but i remember coming across the song again not long after he died and i found the song very comforting and sad. I also just really resonated with the lyrics especially the part 'but it's not real and you don't exist'. I would often have dreams about my dad still being alive and then waking up and coming to the painful realisation that it was just a dream and he really is dead. It's weird cos the song has nothing to do with death but i guess in death and relationships you have to learn to let go and move on. Now I'll forever associate this song with my Dad's Death.
mmm this song feels like one for the romantics. when you have that hope, for something, someone, and it's not real, yet, might not ever be, but it's something you're seeking, and sometimes hold out for. it feels like this. and crashes with reality. the holiday is one of my all time favourite films too :')))
I first heard ceilings live when she was opening for Dodie and it floored me from the first listen. There’s like a rock-overturning simplicity to it, so vivid and moving. I couldn’t wait for it to be released. Been beautiful to see how that song has grown in the world and for Lizzy’s career. So happy for her.
i remeber listening to this song when the only thing we have was a live version bc it was unreleased and i fell in love of this song. when lizzy release the songs list of "five second flat" and seeing ceiling, i knew this song will become viral
Ceiling is good but NOTHING/SAD N STUFF IS HER GREATEST SONG OF ALL TIME. It’s masterfully composed and produced. Perfect for the Fall and Winter seasons
I love this song so much. I so wish it had another bridge at the end that built even more and then another chorus or something. I feel like it just ends when it got great 😭
