Used ThinkPad's are stupid cheap and insanely reliable

Поделиться
HTML-код
  • Опубликовано: 10 ноя 2023
  • A used Lenovo ThinkPad P series is one of the best tech deals you can get if you're in the market for a laptop. These PC's had state of the art technology when new and are designed to be easily repaired and upgraded. You can max the RAM out at 64GB, and with 2 NVMe and 1 2.5" SATA, there's no reason you can't have all your 8K homework in one place. Gaming is possible on the newer models like the P53 and P15, though they do cost a bit more. If you're a bit clumsy, these models are so much sturdier than a new consumer computer so they make a great choice for a basic user like a student or child.

This model, the ThinkPad P52 and the ThinkPad T480 are also called "the very last great ThinkPad" as it offered a lot of customization (fully upgradable RAM, a lot of port selection, and swappable battery) that got taken away in the next generation

Can confirm, bought a used thinkpad T480 last year. Works great for school (including compiling code), media consumption, emulating wii games, etc. gaming and screen brightness are the only thing I’m missing. Best part js, I fucked up the keyboard and replaced it in 5 minutes for 30 bucks. Battery was old so I got a bigger one for 40 bucks and it lasts for days in battery saver mode. Both of these fixes are so simple you don’t even need to open the computer up, just slide things in and out.

The trend of flatter laptops is a crime.
I want my gaming laptop to survive being in a bag and surviving the outdoors and thick enough to cool itself without needing an array of fans plugged in under it.

When I was in college, the university first implemented a policy that all students had to have a laptop. This was the laptop that the university would sell to you if you didn’t want to buy a different one, and what they gave for free to students that were there on financial aid. Everyone assumed that, because the university was giving them out, they must have sucked- but we were all pleasantly surprised at how solid they were.

The funny thing is that the IT dept in my college only lent out Lenovo Thinkpads. They were assigned to the professors as well if they didn't have their own and it's a literal dinosaur to carry around. But man did they hold up over the years...

I too grew up in a pretty low-income family (I believe mostly due to poor financial management), and fixing stuff became second nature.
All my PCs were "franken-PCs" cobbled together from whatever garbage parts we could scrounge up, and we had to share a single desktop with internet access. My first new computer was a cheap and crappy Compaq laptop I got when I was around 16-17.
Having the means to get proper equipment is amazing, and I pray I won't ever end up in in the same financial hell my parents did.

I haven't done this with laptops yet but I've been doing it for a decade with general purpose desktops (office work, light browsing, etc). It's cheaper to just buy a whole new PC than to buy the parts and that's even before diagnostic time. Just swap the drive over and away you go. I was averaging replacing one around every 2 years.

I like most ThinkPad models, but the P series are solid laptops that like you say are probably the closest think to classic ThinkPads. They are are pretty durable, have ample ports (for the most part, looking at you P16 without an RJ45 port), perform well, and are generally pretty reliable. Like you said you can find good deals on used ones too, and even older models like the P50 and P70 are still pretty good.

My mom needed an new laptop , came straight to me since I deal with used laptops specifically and resell them locally. Set her up with an 2020
unibody Mac book w/ fast charger at her request for $350. eBay is an wonderful place; just gotta be patient with deals.

we still got a T520 fro 2009 i think? I slapped in a 120GB SSD and gave it to my mother, she uses it for FB and the games up there, watching movies and series and browsing the net, 100% goot for it + i connected a 24" samsung monitor that i used for my gaming setup so she can actually see on the biger screen so it's all fine but yeah, thinkpads are something else, like goddamn it's from 2009 and the keyboard is still one of the bests i've ever used
