"Every success I've had had been wrapped in a gift box of failure" is such a great line

I finished reading The Book Thief today.
Words would fail to describe the beauty and intellect put into this work.
There will only be one Markus Zusak.
Thank you Herr Zusak for gifting us with this gem

Yes same. When I finished it for the second time I wanted to somehow tell him "Thank you for bringing this beauty into the world"
Best book I have ever read.

It's so nice to know that one of my favourite authors has failed too. Gives me hope that I can overcome them too.
Also Markus is like the nicest person ever. Met him at a literary meet. He is so gracious and nice to everyone

I completely agree with you. Even I met him this month at the literary meet and I must say he is so humble and we'll behaved.

only a genius can even come up with an idea to have death as a narrator...

Fascinating. Coming back from watching The Book Thief, and re-reading it.. I'm fascinated with the amount of care that went into creating that beautiful piece of writing. Thank you Markus for both your failures and your successes!

“if it had all gone smoothly, I would’ve had a 200 page book that really meant something to me. But because getting around all those problems and all those failures, I had a 580 page book that meant everything to me”

My failures made me realize that science wasn't for me and watching this talk has made me appreciate all of my failures even more. Thanks for this talk, Markus, and thanks for writing some amazing books

The Book Thief is my absolute favorite book. I’ve read it every summer since 2016 and I intend to continue doing so (I’m currently in the middle of my seventh read). Super grateful for Markus Zusak and his failures because they led to the beauty that is The Book Thief

"Here is the thing with writers: Everyone thinks that to be a writer you gotta have a great imagination, you dont. You just have to have a lot of problems. Clearly."
And yes only a genius could have written The Book Thief. Read it last year. Re-reading it this year. 🤧❤️
