How do you think sports leagues should address sports betting moving forward?
As a 25yr veteran of the industry, Nick is 100% correct. Translators and interpreters are entrusted with some of the most sensitive and valuable information in society, literally in position to influence international relations, government policy, and global economy. In official settings, everything in our industry is double and triple checked. Ohtani should have a team, not a buddy.
And, as it turns out, this isn't an issue with the Dodgers. It goes all the way back to the Nippon Ham Fighters who originally hired Mizuhara, who it turns out fabricated his academic credentials to first get in the industry. Basically, the guy's entire life is a lie and there's no telling how much he's lied, stolen, and scammed over the years.
Ippei must be the greatest master of disguise to ever roam the Earth.
Living in Japan, Nick is 100 percent right.
I worked in the Trust industry (managing assets for estates, wealthy people, and even corporate pension funds, etc.) for 20 years. There is a lot of embezzlement that goes on. The companies that are victims usually try to hush things up and hide as much from the media as possible, as it is bad look to the public. In cases where a large group of people are working for a wealthy person or corporation, there is a lot of cracks and holes which people can exploit. It's called diffusion of responsibility and the bystander effect. In today's world, everyone's job is so specialized and narrow that people know only their own job functions and tasks and are blind to the bigger picture or what others may be doing. Often, the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. Lots of opportunities for malfeasance.
Why do baseball players even employ interpreters? No other major professional North American sport does this for veterans. The most I have seen is Russian hockey players using interpreters the first few years while they improve their English. The baseball offseason is long, surely they have time to get conversational in English.
This is not just for Japanese baseball players either. Latin American stars like Yordan Alvarez also uses an interpreter for all interviews.
Imagine if Luka Doncic (NBA), Alexander Ovechkin (NHL), or Lionel Messi (MLS) used interpreters, it would come across as weird.
I'm Japanese, but I want Americans to know about this new translator. I feel like he only translates about 80% of what's said. For starters, he uses "obviously" a lot, but Shohei never says "obviously" in Japanese. Also, Shohei didn't use the word "willfully" in Japanese. I think a real professional translator should have done this. Shohei's explanation in Japanese was perfect and left no room for doubt. Shohei's explanation in Japanese clearly and concisely shows that Shohei has nothing to do with gambling and that Ippei was telling a huge lie to everyone around him at the beginning.
Another thing that really caught my attention was that Shohei said he spoke using notes. But the interpreter said "document." This is a pretty big difference, and when you listen to Shohei's Japanese, it's clear that it's not written Japanese, but spoken Japanese. What you can tell is that he's not speaking from memory, but rather he focuses on the main points and then speaks in his own words.
If you listen to it, a native Japanese person can tell whether someone simply said something prepared or whether they focused on the main points and said it in their own words. It's clear that Shohei didn't speak from memory, and it wasn't an acted speech.
Could not agree more. Nick is Wright
Hey buddy how are you? Just wanted to point out you spelled right incorrectly
I can't tell if you're trolling@tomstorm7926 😂
Yep, he's right, degenerate gambler befriended Ohtani, gained his trust, and then took advantage of the situation
Agree

Very sound points you made.
Dane Cook was embezzled by his own brother out of $12 million dollars over a period of 10 years. Dane Cook said he didn't pay much attention to his accounts and the only way it was caught was that he hired a new manager, and the new manager found out about the crime. For Dane Cook, it was not about English or interpretation, it was about trusting someone too much. Wealthy people are often too busy and delegate things to others.
GREAT TAKE!!!!
If only ohtani was a bilingual unicorn. Ippei was literally controlling Ohtani’s life. Who knows if Ippei was translating everything correctly to ohtani and others.
This is the answer
Power of Attorney(POA) or check writing privileges
ohtani is completely innocent👍

When I worked as an interpreter, I had to assist the players on just about every aspect of their daily lives. These include: opening bank accounts, taking them to DMV to get licenses, and setting up utilities. I also carried their check books on the road for clubhouse dues.
Nick was lowkey giving his son the game, planting seeds are important
I totally get the translation bit of it. Ohtani really was a sitting duck (tho at some point it may be a good idea to learn english, I know it's hard but I can't go to Japan for a long-term employment opportunity, willingly not learn Japanese and then say woah is me when I get taken advantage of. IMO). The translation definitely explains the switching up of stories, since they only had Ippei's side.
But what gets me is the timing of the transfer. It was in November. Idc about translation, or how much money you have, If $4.5 million dollars is exiting you account no questions asked that is a HUGE problem. It seems a bit fishy to me, and I think it's the key.
I want to fully believe Ohtani, but rn it's he said/he said.
Rare W for Nick.
100%
I think if you are worth millions of dollars a year, you have the obligation to learn a secondary skill (like another language) that enables you to properly make/care for that money.
8:37 I’m unclear if credit was rolling along though or if ippei was just paying him thru Ohtani over time so he didn’t owe it all at once. If the money was coming in I doubt the bookie cares specifically how.
7:01 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Paying someone’s rent is one thing. Paying a gambling debt quite another
MJS I'm sure he has looked at his bank statements/records before.
I think he was totally connected to that guy and maybe shy and not comfortable with being a star. But he was totally dedicated
It'll be funny if other active athletes get caught in the investigation with the bookie
The truth will come out when otani's lawyers and accountants explain to the IRS what this 4.5 million dollar money trail is all about ! Will they try to write this off as an expenditure a loss or robbery ?!
We’ve only learned about the betting scam, but I’m sure there’s a lot more that this interpreter was lying to Ohtani about. He had so much access and power and has been proven to be a massive thief and liar, so I really doubt we know the depth of his deception.
Can you imagine eating Thanksgiving dinner with him
Then go arrest epay 😅what’s the hold up ??
Investigation takes time. Probably in about 5 months till it’s done.
Ohtani ma be naive, but come on -- he's got tens of millions of dollars and he doesn't have a financial planner who speaks Japanese, he doesn't have an accountant who speaks Japanese?
Ippei was both of those for him… lol
But, who tells you that Otanhi didn’t know? 8:04
Does he not have an agent. Wouldn’t he have a financial team guiding him. I don’t see how an interpreter had this much power. Doesn’t matter if he speaks English or not
More like personal assistant. People trying to act as if Rich people have never been ripped off by employees before
@@agag2684 No dirt bag accepts full responsibility. They'll lie to the bitter end and sometimes take their accomplice down with them. The fact that Ippei is taking full responsibility makes this very suspicious and seems more to the story.
@@metsrus that doesn't even make sense 😵💫 going by what you said. You would believe ohtani more if ippei said NO, SHOHEI IS LYING, HES IN ON IT. HE MADE ME DO IT, correct??????
@@agag2684 what incentive does Ippei have for telling the truth and taking full responsibility at this point, if he was such a bad person. Is that something a theft and a liar would do? do you see the inconsistency? There is more to the story. Americans are not naive, when they see one guy blame the entire thing on another guy, and that other guy doesn't defend himself but takes full responsibility, that is something suspicious. It's call taking the fall.
@@metsrus I see the inconsistentcy in your logic that is all over the place. If IPPEI SAYS HE DID, PEOPLE SAY" NAH DONT BELIEVE IT OHTANI IN ON IT. And if he says ohtani lying, he made me do it. SEE OHTANI IN ON IT HIS GUY TOLD ON HIM. OR AM I mistaken?
Does Nick actually believe this? Lol
Nah, but he’s getting paid enough to pretend he does
Yes. He truly believes it. Ippei is a known liar.
Yes and so does everyone else who has above room temperature IQ.
Looks like Nick got his talking points from espn down pat. Pretty quick turnaround, too. Appears MLB and Sports Media are going with the “it’s all the interpreter’s fault! He’s a criminal mastermind!” explanation. Not buying it.
Could be because there has still yet to be a single piece of evidence contradicting ohtani’s story
The bottom line is that Ohtani must be the dumbest person alive for using his own name on the transaction NINE TIMES.
You haven't been paying attention. Ippei perpetrated the crime and Shohei had no clue. Yikes, your comprehension is severely lacking.
This is the most nauseating way to speak. Just grinding.
Ohtan is guilty. Heres why
If you have a registered gun, and someone commits a crime with it and they find the gun, you're considered the person responsible because the gun is yours
The money is Ohtani's. Therefore, he is responsible. PERIOD
you're so smart
✨👏✨👏✨👏✨
I don’t believe Ohtani doesn’t speak English. The interpreter thing is a front.
Yeah, that's a great idea. Have two interpreters arguing over what I'm saying and what I'm hearing. I too, would rather rely on one person and concentrate on my baseball playing. How bout' have a barber shop quartet do my interpreting so I can get at least a harmony going?
Seems highly unlikely that Ohtani is not somehow involved in the gambling. Whoops, LA may have made a $700 Million mistake.
3/4 of a Bill for a baseball player. What a joke.
Seems like the opposite 🤔
The kid who never saw Jordan, Kareem or Kobe play live and swears Lebron stats in an overinflated stats era, Lebron who has so many weaknesses, Lebron who hasn’t obsessed over and over into perfecting his game like Kobe who swears Lebron is the GOAT. Lebron not on my top 5. He has longetivity and a freak body…didn’t max on his potential
Cool story lady
You lose all credibility claiming lbj ain't top 5. Good job.
I watched Kobe. Lebron is better. Sorry
The whole story is BS. The fall guy.
This is the only time I will agree with nick. 😂
