I wanted to make this quick video to give some more insight onto what Computer Information Systems entails, and if it could be a good fit for you! I sure as heck was lost when I began the program, and I hoping that this can clear up some of that confusion for you all:)

I changed my major from CS to CIS because I'm absolutely abysmal at math, of course, that doesn't mean I don't plan to learn math on my own. Just trying to keep up with math while trying to learn previous math isn't something I think I can do with my grades intact.

I expected mostly business IT like hardware and networking but it quickly turned into more full stack application development and its awesome. I love how fluid the degree is. I current work in IT but I can easily jump to development which is what I will be doing once i graduate.

As 20+ vet in the field who is wrapping up MSc CIS - it has by far extended my learning and ability to make adjustments more dynamically. Adjustments in how I think about CRUD, analyze the same and bring out dimensions of understanding most peers never see. Understanding technology as it relates to the needs of People, Politics, Structure, and Symbolism is a level of professional game adjustment many cannot even perceive much less practice.
Coding, hard skills, certifications, and specialties are easy to pick up if you desire and put that work in.
CS had all the hype and street talk. So did Computer Engineering. But after living out CIS and evolving, the truth can only be revealed to those who live it. CIS is great value for dollar. You can grasp the program deeper than a programmer and make great impact because they are bent on applying code only - a broader perspective is truly needed.

The program offers concentrations. Check with the school you have in mind. They will be more than helpful (at least based on my experience). Also, know that professional option courses, maybe 1 or 2 can be taken by an MSc CIS program offered elsewhere. Sync with the program admin teams to iron out logistics, costs and fit within your curriculum journey if that's the path you choose.
A ton of writing is afforded to you depending on concentration. Especially, if you choose essay thesis research paper finale as your exit path. Unquestionably, a ton of skillful research will avail itself to hone your writing skills and experience.

I know CIS curriculum at graduate level.
Don't know much about the undergrad level.
I encourage you to do the homework on best options and dollar for value. It's worth vetting your online or degree completion options. Finally, you get what you put into the program... regardless of its street hype and reputation (in my opinion). As long as it's regulated or accredited and sets you up with a foundation for continuous learning. That's the new currency of the future. Adapting and learning because technology is constantly changing so one can never rest solely on what they learned in school etc

      Hey!!:)
I would say so! Different colleges offer different concentrations that could better suit your interests for this as well! For example, SNHU often allows for a data analysis concentration on their degrees, so you can get a little bit best of the both worlds! I believe CS or CIS would be suitable to get a job in QA, and my program offered courses that went further into UX design (such as courses in Human-Computer interaction, web design basics, etc.).
Definitely look around at some college’s you may be interested in and the curriculum they offer and see if they fit into your desires!! I also recommend looking at sites such as FreeCodeCamp or Udemy, where much of this specialized material is provided in a stress-free way:) *not sponsored, I just use these often myself!:)*

However- there are some programs where this may not be required at all! Truly comes down to the university. Hope this helps! Wishing you the best of luck, I am also not savvy with math and that definitely was a concern for me as well. I had switched to CS for my bachelors and was only required to take discrete math, just for context!:) Stay well!!

In Arizona for example you will have to take Associate of Business Special requirements in a community college then transfer into a 4 year college to complete Bachelor (Arizona State University) So check with the Universities in your state and see how it works. See which specific Associate they want. Thats the mistake most people make in community college and end up wasting their time and money.
Before you take any single class in a community college, check with the University that you will transfer after, they will give you a specific major map with the community college that they work with. Thank you!!

What are your thoughts on information technology vs CIS? Im interested in hacking but I am also curious about businesses and how they work. Do you think id learn the skills to hack with a CIS degree?

    • @WutUpJut
      @WutUpJut  2 года назад +4

      Hey Michael!
I believe hacking will fall heavily under information technology or cyber security, but encapsulate computer science studies. I would say this could fall heavily on the college, and would recommend looking into the specific offerings at each possible college. For me, I had some ideas for basic cyber security in my computer information studies, but never took anything specifically that covered any sort of hacking. As I’m currently in my bachelors for computer science, I can also say this is the same- but I have the opportunity to take courses that may include this!
I believe it truly would come down to the college, and recommend analyzing each degree plan or course offerings to see if it may best fit your interests!!
Really neat that you want to get into ethical hacking! Hope this provides some clarity and helps. Stay well! ✨

I think that could be a great idea!! Even if there isn’t a full certification, taking some basic business courses could be great. CS is an engineering degree and CIS is a business degree. As your GPA declines the likelihood of you switching to CIS increases.

actually, CS is an applied msth degree more than an engineering degree. a CS major will never have to take a class in fluid dynamics, mechanics of materials (statics and dynamics), or thermodynamics and kinetics like all engineers.
