the short, choppy haircut on the guillotine girl is actually perfect, cause during the french rev it was standard practice when sending someone to the national razor to cut off as much hair as possible as quickly as possible right before execution so it wouldn't interfere with the blade - which, morbidly enough, actually became a popular hairstyle referred to as "coiffure à la victime" (hairstyle like the victims')

@ i don’t know about that, but from what i understand because of the societal shift towards democratic values, ancient rome became cool again and with that so did ancient roman haircuts. so the shortly cropped look became a popular style, as well as a way for the people of france to distance themselves from the gaudy and elaborate powdered wigs of the second estate! it was a popular look for both men and women though, so unfortunately i couldn’t say when it became a gendered thing :[

Isolde: Lady Nightshade (because of one of the main ingredients of the poison)
Alev: Phoenix (half because mystical Firebird, other half because people are enchanted by her)

Fun fact: The bog punishment was a very brutal one (duh and idk if this was mentioned on that part) because the moss and other components didn’t fully kill you, it was used because nothing in the bog would be able to set your soul free from you body, so your body would be slowly decaying and mummifying while you are still aware and awake. Also a bog body would have a change of hair and skin because of the other components of the bog!

11:54 I'm not an anthropologist/archaeologist, my specialty is not hominids, but I am a paleontologist so I know preservation. Peat bogs are a wild combination of factors leading to their effectiveness in preservation. Many different bogs around the world will preserve things, but some better than others (not all will preserve soft tissues, or only certain kinds of tissues for example) depending on their conditions, location, and type. There are three main factors that make bogs natural mummifiers: pH, oxygen, and temperature. As the old peat decomposes it produces acids that drop the pH of the water, making it similar to that of vinegar, which results in the bogs essentially pickling organic material in them. If you've ever pickled vegetables, you know this can make them last a very very long time, similar concept. Secondly, the bogs are a highly hypoxic to anoxic environment, meaning they have very little to no oxygen, due to lack of drainage and the decomposing peat. There are microbes that do not require oxygen, but the ones responsible for decomposition do (this is part of how algal blooms become a problem), without any excess oxygen the bugs can't do their work. And lastly, temperature, many bogs are very cold which acts to slow microbial activity. Again, think about putting milk and eggs in the fridge so they last longer, less bacterial activity.
The main ways soft tissue of animals survives long term are: anoxia, desiccation (drying out), freezing, acidity, permineralization, rapid burial, and amber encapsulation. Bogs have 2-3 all in one!
Bogs preservation is basically like putting something in a pickling jar with no oxygen and then putting it in the fridge. Very safe. Kinda gross, but about as safe from natural decomposition processes as something can be naturally.

contrary to popular belief, being burned at the stake was more rare than people say! they'd usually throw the "witch" into water, and if she drowned, she was innocent, and if she survived, she would be burned. still, the stake was an execution method that *was* used lmao, the drowning method was jst more common as far as i'm aware
    edit:
these are notes i’ve collected reading the replies btw feel free to correct me if this info is wrong!!
    (credit to @vegetable_warmth !!)

burning at the stake was fairly rare, like i said before, much less common than most people would think/say, which is becoming more common information as far as i’ve seen. the stake takes a lot of resources, and honestly, “witches” weren't really “important” enough to be burned.
the drowning method was also rarer than i made it seem in my original comment. usually the “witch” would be stoned, hanged, tortured (to death), banished, etc. you're meant to fish the “witch” out of the lake before she dies, otherwise it's murder. (in most documented cases, history is weird, it's bound to be used a different way *somewhere* 🤷‍♀️)
one of the only actual cases of “witches” being burned at the stake was in scotland, in the early modern period, which was also very rare.
    (credit to @Floppy-cat_ !!)

mary tudor/mary I (more commonly known as bloody mary) burned almost 300 people at the stake for being protestant/not being catholic. burning at the stake wouldn't be the worst way to die, because you'd (in some cases) get your lungs filled up by smoke and suffocate, or your nerve endings would get burned and you wouldn't be able to feel the fire because, well, 3rd degree burns.
    (credit to @aquilaorion3531 !!)

the swimming test, again, wasn't as common as i made it seem originally. it also was banned in many european countries (darn those europeans, never letting us have any fun /j /nsrs).
a more common test was checking for a “witch's mark/the witch’s teat” (extra nipple they use to feed their “familiar”).
    -
again, sorry if i got anything wrong, i was basing most of this information off of replies i got, feel free to correct me!!

For the guillotine person, I recommend naming her Trista. It’s a French name that means “sorrowful sword” and it plays on the fact that the guillotine is French and that it brings sorrow.
The second girl I recommend naming Era. It is a play on “erode” I made myself (erode-ero-era) and it also is a reference to past times that no longer are needed.
And for the “burning-at-the-stake” girl, I recommend Cinder.
Finally, I recommend Nea for the last girl. It’s short for Neanderthal, since a lot of bog bodies are Neanderthals.
Great art as always, keep it up :D

Guillotine: Josephine (feminine version of the creator's first name)
Aqua Tofana: Cersei (name of a witch from Greek mythology)
Pyre: Seraphina (relates to fire but also the angels)
    Bog bodies: Petra (like petrified)

Hey, nice names! Though, I really don't want to come off as disrespectful or "be that person", but the Greek witch goddess is called Circe, not Cersei. Cersei is a fictional character from Game of Thrones. I understand how they are similar in a way.

i feel like juliet would be a fitting name for the aqua tofana girl - it has connections both to julia, as in julia tofana, and of course, it has associations with romance ending in tragedy, which goes neatly with the theme of marriage and the tragedy the women faced at the hands of their husbands, as well as the demise of their “romeo”.
side note; thank you for using the name i suggested in the last video! it feels so cool to be seen by longtime my favorite youtuber.

Idk if you have already named them yet but regardless i have a few ideas too,
First the guillotine girl should be named madame guillotine as someone earlier said as it references the nickname for the guillotine which was that
Next for the invisible poison, the widow or something like winona? Something that has elements from the whole silent intentionally poinsonings of the spouses
Next the burn at the stake girl, pyra? Yknow like the word pyro for fire and as it has been used a decent bit as a name for people already
next the bog girl...maybe...cryosthia? Coming from cryo for the act of preserving a body in cold, stasis, the slowing of things like in the body an stuff, and anasthesia the process of being put to sleep before a operation,
Just some thoughts, regardless tho nice video as always these are always fun to watch

Sorry im late but I have quite a few name suggestions
    Guillotine:
    - Lunette (part of a guillotine)
    -Severette/Severin (from sever)
-The Red Widow/La Veuve Rouge (another name used for a guillotine)
-Marie Antoinette (Self-explanatory though I do feel this one is kinda boring and not necessarily the best one to choose)
Aqua Tofana: (not many for this one)
    -Juila or Tofana (self-explanatory)
-Aqualin, Aqualina, or any other name-sounding variation of aqua (self-explanatory)
Pyre (just gonna list a bunch of names that mean fire or burning or something like that)
-Seraphina, Aithne, Ember, Calida, Hestia, Abellona, Fiamma, Apollo, Eliane, etc. (personally I like all the ones that come from religion and whatnot because it is ironic and can possibly show that aspect of it more?)
Bog Bodies: (again could only really think of 2)
-Mosley or Rusk (both mean bog)
Ty to anyone who reads this. And if you did, please let me know if you liked my ideas!

I think it's only right that guillotine's name is Marianne! I saw somebody suggest the same thing, but connecting it to Marie Antoinette or Anne Boleyn, but Marianne is also the name of France's allegorical personification (like the US has Columbia, the brits have Britannia, Germany's Germania, etc)! Her most famous depiction is in Eugene Delacroix's "Liberty leading the people" (Marianne and "Liberty" often being one in the same). Can't think of any better name for this bloody vigilante :)
