I said it before. In the original I hear a warning very gently. But in this I hear the anger for the warning not being heeded. Good reason to hear the original and the new if not together one after the other then two reactions one after the other. I believe I hear the same exact words complete in both (if not it's real close). But the voice change changes something deep in the meaning.
Personally I *am* angry that this warning was never heeded when Simon and Garfunkel first wrote it. The reason for that IMHO is *greed.* To me, human history is no mystery and if this sound of *silence* made a noise it would sound like the agonized wailing of a world full of people cursed to live their lives under oppression and dictatorship and embroiled in constant *war.* Be careful what you wish for, (and vote for), because *you might just get it.* I support the Common Good for All people and I dearly wish we could begin to evolve toward world peace.
Did you notice that at the end there was a boat full of musicians crossing the river to the people on shore holding sheet music and once they meet, they will end the SILENCE.
I think Paul Simon said something along the lines of "it was always meant to be a dark song, me and Art just didn't have the range to make it sound like this". He adores what Disturbed did with it.
One of many truly brilliant Simon and Garfunkel songs. This version is great, coming from a position of anger over the status qua. Simon and Garfunkel perform it more from a position of sadness, I think. Both work very well!
This is the best version of this song EVER! I've always loved Simon and Garfunkel -- but Disburbed's version of this song is epic and impactful! It brought gravitas to the lyrics and it raised the song to another level.
This song fits any era. Today I relate it to the neon Gods we made (technology, phones) where people do not speak but text, they can be in the same room or at the same table, we LOL instead of speaking to someone voice to voice and hearing the laugh outloud which is so much more fun, makes us all want to laugh and the sound the vibration is healing to the body. Politics and power are trying to intimidate and shut down free speech using horrific tactics, even arresting someone or taking them out to keep you from hearing them. In a marraig the two stop speaking to each other and "silence like a cancer grows" it gets worse until there is no relationship. Warning signs are everywhere. Comedians shut down, people deleted from social media. These writers were amazing.
Hey BP - love this version of Sound of Silence. I am 69 so know it well. I love David Draiman's voice is just perfect for this song. He was professionally trained as a Cantor, as many of his family have. But he decided to change directions, and he hired a vocal trainer to help him learn how to do the growl and grit in his voice. His range is unbelievable. The live version is also a good one. Conan Show. Yeah, you need to check that one out if you haven't already. Have a good one, Kathy
One of the greatest songs ever written and Disturbed knocked it out of the park. The saddest thing, thing may not be the best word, is the relevance of these words today. How far have we come as human beings? Or how many steps have we taken backwards?
I loved how he ramped the song up verse by verse. Its so soft at the start, then it gets so strong, then angry, and you can FEEL the rage as he sings about the world around him. Its like the whole world is shaking in the final verse as his voice echoes and rasps.
If you're going to remake a song and put a new and very different spin on it and pull a different feel and other emotions out while doing so, THIS is how you do it! I love the original but this is everything the original is and so much more.
OH HELL YES Great decision to react to this music video version!!!! The visuals are so amazing in what they were trying to portray with the amazing lyrics of the song! The live Conan performance is also great but THIS is EXACTLY how everyone should be exposed to this AMAZING rendition of this classic! After watching the incredible imagery of this video THEN watch the Conan performance. It's a NO BRAINER! BOTH are amazing.
I know and love the original Simon & Garfunkel version of this song, so I was interested to hear that a cover had been done by Disturbed. The first time I saw their video, it just blew my mind, I had goosebumps, chills, the lot, it was incredible. I still get goosebumps every time I watch it, the whole band are amazing but David Draiman's vocals are just on another level, awesome. I read a comment on another channel which said, 'the original version makes you think, this version makes you feel', and it's so true. This Disturbed version is very powerful, taking nothing whatever away from the wonderful S &G original. Really enjoyed your reaction, Anthony, with Black Pegasus, great video.😊👍
I still get chills! I'm in a really hot room right now and am covered in chills and goosebumps! I've seen and heard this, well, I'm not sure how many times, but it literally has to be in triple digits. Another fantastic cover of this is done by an artist named Geoff Castellucci. 💙
@@DravenGal I know what you mean, the emotions that go through me when I watch this video, I'm hot, cold, chilled, goosebumps, the lot! And like you, I've watched it many times, it never seems to lose its impact which is phenomenal.
@@annemaclean6634 Yeah, David's voice really inspires emotions. The story goes Paul Simon came up to Draimen at an event, and told him it was "his song now." Not sure if it's true, but it's certainly believable. If you have a true appreciation for outstanding vocal talent, of a different sort than David's, I would be remiss if I didn't recommend checking out Geoff Castellucci's channel, and that of his group, VoicePlay. Geoff does *deep* bass covers! But that's not the extent of his range. I believe that both the gentlemen in this video have reacted to them (Geoff/VoicePlay). Not only is Geoff's range amazing (all male singing voices and guys you hear and see in his videos are him), he goes all out for his videos! Some are simple, some are Hollywood-worthy. I think the most notable thing about how they crafted this cover was the build up. He started low, steady, clear and the built up to the last verse where he got to the scream. David Drainman is an incredible vocalist.

I had heard Simon and Garfunkel's version dozens of times growing up but I never really listened to the message until this version because it's so intimate, yet powerful.
He does the live version great, but I absolutely love this video production, it’s so effective with his voice and everything within the song being portrayed. 👍
My first foray into Disturbed was when a guy I was dating showed me their video for "Land of Confusion." As an 80s kid, I grew up with Phil Collins's original, which is great, but I actually liked Disturbed's more. Then I heard them doing "Ten Thousand Fists" on the radio, and liked it enough to get one of their albums, which I still enjoy today. David's voice is one on a kind! I'm not heavy into metal, but Disturbed and Peyton Parrish (a recent discovery) are expanding my mind.💙
Fist time I heard this version of the sound of silence from the band disturbed. I was hooked now I listen to disturbed all the time gave me chills. This man’s got crazy vocals all the way around.
I probably replayed it 20 times the first time I first watched it. Absolutely incredible!!! Soooo glad you didn't pause it. I was really worried about that. Your reactions were exactly as I thought they would be. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
What I like about this is it really showed David Draimen vocals. There’s quite a few metal and rock bands that have lead singers that could frankly sing opera and do it well if they desired. Those singers get overlooked often regarding their vocal quality. Brent Smith from Shinedown or Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden or Ann Wilson from Heart. There’s more to add. I just think some of the rock/metal band vocalists get overlooked when it comes to superior vocal ability. So I love when they mix in a song that really shines a light on the vocals because they’re often just as good or better than any famous singer we see today.
Paul Simon has said that he wouldn’t be able to even fall asleep or even wake up and not be able to go back to sleep. He wrote some of his best songs in his head in the dark, hence Welcome darkness my old friend. It’s about the 60s when people were becoming divided about the Vietnam War, politics, or caring about our fellow man. Simon posted Disturbed’s cover of this song on all of his social media and let the band know that he loved it and felt they had lifted it back to relevancy during present times. But if you don't have Myles Kennedy on your radar yet, you definitely should, and also check out the live version of him sitting in with Disturbed in concert as David and Myles harmonize like Simon and Garfunkel on the original. I guarantee you will be impressed. And as the others have said, more Disturbed. " INDESTRUCTIBLE" IS REQUIRED ON EVERY DECENT GYM PLAYLIST BY LAW. When Paul Simon heard this he shared it on his own public platforms. The original was great, it sounded beautiful, this is epic and takes it to a whole'nother level, Excellent video, but also you should watch the live performance on Conan.
My dad grew up on the Simon and Garfunkel version, and does not care for Disturbed and other “head banging” bands. However, when I played this for this for him shortly after it came out, his first words were “can you play that again”?
I has very fortunate to see them in Dallas at House of Blues for their "pre tour" just 1 day before their appearance on Conan's show... They sound better live... That is not easy to do, but they nailed it. Disturbed is one of the few bands that are better live than the album.
Such a great combination of S&G lyrics with Disturbed angry take. Simple yet Profound is so correct. You guys have a great discussion and celebration of a truly epic and timeless song. Now if you want another remarkable cover, but at the opposite end of the spectrum and away from simple and profound, try Ghost's take on the Genesis song 'Jesus He Knows Me'. Thoroughly disgusting but they captures in gritty detail the depths of hypocrisy that mankind can sink into. Couple that with the UNCENSORED Genesis original and the message is complete.
I like the music video much better than the live show. I found Disturbed opposite of you in that I had never heard of them before I listened to The Sound of Silence. Then I went to look for more Disturbed and found Down With the Sickness. I guess you can imagine how shocked I was because I didn't know they did metal. I love Down with the Sickness and others of theirs now though so glad The Sound of Silence brought me to them. Once hearing this version, I love it more than the original.
This is one of those covers tgats good if not better than the original. Different, but the same. Another amazing cover is by the band In This Moment- In the Air Tonight.
Simon and Garfunkel gave a warning. Disturbed gave a battle cry.
I told my daughter I want this played at my funeral, full blast, I will not go quietly 😂😂😂

Absolutely agree
People talking without speaking, People hearing without listening......
One of the most powerful lines in a song!
This and Johnny Cash's cover of 'Hurt" are the two best covers I've ever heard.
I agree completely. If you want one that's pretty close though, Bad Wolves - Zombie is really good.

I has very fortunate to see them in Dallas at House of Blues for their "pre tour" just 1 day before their appearance on Conan's show... They sound better live... That is not easy to do, but they nailed it. Disturbed is one of the few bands that are better live than the album.
The live version on Conan O’Brien is probably one of the best live performances on tv. You owe it to yourself to watch.
Notice the silence before he starts.
Majestic.
MAGNIFIQUE
Powerful
This is one of those covers tgats good if not better than the original. Different, but the same.
Another amazing cover is by the band In This Moment- In the Air Tonight.
His live performance on Conan silenced the entire studio staff and audience!!!! And he was sick performing this song...
There is a video of this song with clips from 9/11. It is very moving.
I love the original, but this was a GREAT cover. Disturb-ing!
this version says its to fucking late
Humble Pie
I like this version much better. The Conan version is pretty excellent also.
YES!!!! Correct!!!!
