Hii. I'm from India and I'm studying this novel in my final year. Thank you for explaining this so well. I really love the way you've put it together 🙏
To me personally Duncan felt real and I felt like it's a story about a woman who was just going with the flow without ever really trying to control anything but she weren't even aware of this until she met Duncan.. who was kinda narcissistic in a way he shed light to what's actually wrong about the capitalism and the people following relationship schemes without even feeling it.. Peter didn't know her, didn't want her, neither did Marian really want him back, they just happened to be there next to each other. Duncan was the one who confronted Marian with this because he was eating up Marian's "soul" .. he always just took from her... a beautiful metaphor of this is Duncan eating the last pieces of the cake.. she had to experience this kind of relationship until she stepped up and said enough... and she found herself, she didn't want to meet anyone's expectations anymore... But now as you mentioned that Duncan is maybe imaginary, I like this version too. Maybe Duncan really was an inner journey for her. However it is, I love this novel and also your content here on RUclips and the choices of your books.
