3 years in for bilateral knee replacement, i weight train 5-6 days a week , hike with moderate elevation gain, Fitbit shows between 30 - 120 flights of stairs a day . I get a lot of pain periodically, but I have to find my limits, which I not good at . I love being active, so I’ll deal with the pain at 76 🤙
Thank you for watching and sharing your personal experience..It is great that you are so active, but you are right, it's important to know your limits common sense when determining the appropriate intensity and frequency of activity.
My continued pain that lasted 8 months after surgery was very difficult...Fully recovering one year after surgery was as much that I can take for my physical and mental health..If my pain was persistent for 5 years...I don't know how I could make it...Kudos to my Othepedic Surgeon.
I hope not, the goals is to address this real issue that unfortunately can happen for some folks and discuss some of the best ways to manage and deal with this continued and persistent pain. Please let me know if there are any questions I can help answer.
I realize that this video was made a while ago but I just want to say that I had a bilateral knee replacement over 2 years ago. I do move and garden and walk. The pain just get worse. They both crunch when I bend them. They swell and ache constantly. I’m at a loss. So angry and depressed.
Sorry to hear about your continued pain and issues... I would first rule out any serious issues, possibly a consultation with an orthopedist. Otherwise the best thing is to continue to be active at "happy medium" intensity. If any red flags are ruled out, then it really will come down to re-training your nervous system and body through movement and activity to slowly slowly increase your tolerance... I fully understand this can be extremely challenging and frustrating... but you likely are still making good improvements even if you can't identify them at this point, hopefully you will notice a breakthrough with your symptoms and activity tolerance sometime soon. Best wishes!
I've been in terrible pain for 10 years after my tkr more after my revision 5 years ago. I have been wondering if my pain was tendinitis since I have no swelling and I think the replacement is ok. I'm praying I can retrain my brain!🙏🏻 thanks for the video!
I'm so sorry to hear about your continued pain years after surgery. Hopefully, this video provides some helpful information and tips. Best wishes to you!
I'm frustrated and exhausted dealing with persistent PAIN. It's crippling and extremely limiting. I'm becoming depressed as I continue to exercise as much as possible, but I get very little to no reward for all the work I put in.
I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties with persistent pain and what comes with it... exercise is great, if you are still having issues with pain it can also be helpful to look at other aspects of your life and health and wellness. For example, are you getting enough sleep, are you eating healthy, are you getting some sunlight throughout the day, are you managing stress in appropriate ways... Pain is complex and there are many factors that can influence your pain levels positively or negatively. Sometimes a change in one domain of health can cause positive benefits in other domains, including pain management.
I have been suffering for over 13 years day and night since knee surgery . I have had two hip surgeries and it’s is so hard for me to walk. Wish I had never had it done. You are just trading 1 pain for another.
I tore my ACL including right meniscus and had repair surgery when I was 20. At 37, due to sports activity my right cartilage has completely worn out and I have developed arthritis with some uneven surface under my knee. Can right kind of brace be my solution? I want to delay knee surgery till I am in my late 50s, but I want to manage pain and don't buckle my knee... Any advise will be appreciated. Perhaps I can condition my pain tolerance and ride through the young years while staying active.
An off-loading knee brace can help with pain management and activity tolerance, but doesn't work for everyone. Generalized exercise and physical activity is the best long-term management strategy for knee pain and arthritis, although it might seem counterintuitive as you may have some pain in the short-term when doing the activity. Also, maintaining a healthy body weight and healthy anti-inflammatory diet.
I had both knees replaced at the same time some 16 years ago. about 5 years ago I saw the surgeon who did the operations as I was having hot and painful issues around the knees. I do activities cycling and walking to stay active and for pleasure , but at times I have to stop as pains are too much. The surgeon carried out X-rays, washout, infection tests, and eventually saying "to be brutal" he couldn't help me. Both joints considered sound, but patella Baja had occurred and scarring to the tendons was pulling and creating the issues. I still ride my bike, but now it's electric to reduce some pressure, and still hike in the country but not as far as I used to. I do regular daily exercises when the pains aren't too excessive. I have seen 2 Physio's privately, trying shockwave treatment, and manipulation. I have developed problems with my right hip, my right knee now hurts more than the left. I wonder if it is arthritis set in to my hip, but my present Physio believes it's to do with the tendon and patella Baja issue, pulling the large muscle down and consequent pressure. I was reading about Istym therapy, and wondering about Ablation treatment ? I am open to any ideas. Mick Clark . UK.
Sorry to hear about your struggles. It sounds like you are dealing with persistent pain, which is really a different beast than normal post surgical pain. With persistent pain there are often various factors that aren't directly related to anything physical with muscles, tendons or other soft tissue and more so to do with how your nervous system responds to different stimuli. This video helps explain this more: ruclips.net/video/kdFuBNaUZoE/видео.html as do some other videos on my channel. You may benefit from seeing a physical therapist or other healthcare provider who specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
New pain in one knee eight years after bilaterial knee replacement. Nervous … what does this mean? It can NEVER be replaced I’ve been told since my unqualified doctor trimmed my femur!!! Other knee was rereplaced a year after the first surgery. (A different surgeon!)
I'm sorry to hear about your knee pain; that sounds really frustrating. It’s understandable to be nervous, especially with the history you’ve described. Pain in a replaced knee can have various causes, such as issues with the implant, surrounding tissue, or even unrelated factors. Since you’ve had multiple surgeries, it might be especially helpful to consult with a specialist who focuses on complex cases like yours. They could provide a thorough assessment and help you understand your options. Best wishes to you!
I had a partial knee replacement a year and a half ago but 6 weeks ago slowly developed pain in my knee. Sometimes it's sharp in one spot and then it will ache on the opposite side. Only for a few seconds if I'm sitting or driving, nothing hurts. Sometimes it feels like it's pulling my ligaments and I can hear crackling when I bend my knee. going to call my doctor on Monday and tell him what's going on. I am terrified of another knee replacement.
I definitely recommend consulting with the doctor. This may be just a sprain or strain but better to be safe than sorry and make sure there is no compromise to the replacement.
12 years on and I’m still in pain after full TKR . Consultant told me there is nothing they can do,as the nerves haven’t healed properly. No more surgery for me EVER
Can someone be allergic to titanium that was used for total knee replacement? It was also used on finger for carpal tunnel surgery? Both hurt badly for 15 years now.
There are some people who have reactions to the knee replacement components, but this is not the only potential reason for prolonged pain. If you do think this may be the case for you I recommend consulting with an orthopedic surgeon. They may order testing if they think an allergic reaction may be your issue.
Hi. My mother has had knee replacement surgery 12 years back and now for the last 2 years, she is experiencing a lot of pain. She cannot walk even a little. She has gone through multiple type of medicines and scans. What do you suggest in this case
I can't offer an specific treatment, unfortunately. I would recommend she consult with her primary physician and get connected with physical therapy. A PT can perform a full personalized assessment and help your mother determine what is realistic for her physical and functionally at this time.
Can we all possibly be allergic to the metal in our knee replacements ??? Ive had burni g pain since day 1. Surgery was 8 years ago. Right knee replacement. Constantly feels like ive scraped in on the sidewalk burning. I get the same burni g feeling when i wear cheap earrings. Why arent patients tested for metalk alketgies before surgeries.? Clamps staples replacements etc???? metals???
I'm sorry to hear about the persistent pain you're experiencing. Metal allergies can indeed be a concern for some patients with knee replacements, though they are relatively rare. The burning sensation you’re describing could potentially be related to a metal sensitivity or allergy. Testing for metal allergies before surgery isn’t typically standard practice because these allergies are uncommon and the materials used in implants are generally chosen to minimize the risk of allergic reactions. Persistent pain and discomfort should be evaluated by a specialist who can assess your symptoms and possibly perform tests to determine if metal sensitivity could be a factor. Your quality of life and comfort are important.
I had a fall after the the pain started. Spray the left ankle and knee but I need replacement it in the right side that when I take physical therapy afterwards, I was still experiencing pain especially at night after walking in my house for a long period of time. What would you advise me to do in this matterwith the new replacement which is on the right side
The best way to manage pain after surgery is use multiple different modes: pain medicine, icing, elevating the leg. You can also try some gentle massage to the muscles around the knee.
I apologise for my reply my knee replacement fractured my leg and five weeks later had a second knee replacement with metal rods placed in my leg and 3 years on I'm still in dreadful pain my quality of life is gone I do feel the surgeon must have been careless
I totally understand and am so sorry to hear this. Chronic pain and issues after surgery unfortunately do occur and this can be extremely debilitating and depressing. I'm hoping for and thinking all the best for you, as I said I hope you can find the relief of pain some way or another. Regards.
So glad to see you talk here about reframing pain response and not just structural/physical problems. Thanks!
You are very welcome, hope you found it helpful!

I think you should baby your knee for a couple of months and let all that possible swelling you have inside settle down.
