No matter what comes up in my recording workflow you are already ahead of me with another brilliant video like this. I recorded my guitarist using multi takes to refine a solo and hey presto, this morning, one search in RUclips and there you are again Kenny with the perfect next step video to explain comping in Reaper. You are the gift that just keeps on giving. Thank you.
So useful Thank you. We Reaper users are so lucky to have you Kenny. You saved me countless hours of reading a manual or looking for other tutes which probably wouldn't be as clear and concise as yours.
Thanks Kenny! I started on a 2 track Teac cassette recorder, migrated to a Tascam 144, Portastudio w/DBX, Roland VS-840, Audacity, Adobe Audition, Presonus Studio One Pro, and finally Reaper when the lack of instruction (that I could find) for Presonus lost me. It was your videos in particular that convinced me to make the leap to Reaper. Consistent, concise, detailed and always teach me what I need to know when I need to know it. On to recording some guitar parts this afternoon - this TAKE instruction will make it SO much easier for these old clinker-prone hands! I've been using Reaper with minimal instruction to do a few tunes - it's operation intuitive enough and similar enough to what I've used before. This makes it even easier! Again, THANKS and WELL DONE!
This is exactly what I needed to see right now. You must be psychic, Kenny. Have been cropping to the active takes as I go, but I see much more scope with this method - Particularly putting the selected comps in top lane option. Genius! Thank you, my man, and keep on doing what you're doing ;-)
hey Kenny. As always lot of precious info. But this time what i like the most is that nice goat ! can he come back again in other videos ? i think it's a lot of work for editing. you matched his gesture very well with the music. (sorry for my weird english ! )
Thanks Kenny, it helps a lot. There's only one thing i would recommend for this explanation: use three or four different guitarparts, or, even better: voice parts, so the different parts are even more 'recognizable' (excuses if my english is incorrect) when selected..... But, more important: thanks again!
Lol been using Reaper for long time, never thought about this takes. I keep on duplicating tracks for each take. Now my problem is how to do the reverse- put all my 4 separate tracks I have into one so I can do this quick comping. Thanks will give this a try.
Is there an option to import media files as a takes? I have got vocal takes from outside the reaper recording session and want to work with them the comp takes way.
Thanks Kenny! Appreciate the work to constantly put these out for us. I have a minor tweak / suggestion... would it be possible to play slight variations between takes, so it is more obvious which take you are editing or comping? The playing examples all sound the exact same to me... so I think it would be helpful in illustrating which Take you are pulling from. Even though we can see what you are doing and understand what you are saying. I still think it would be helpful for illustration purposes. Just a thought.
I agree Def Man. Our friend Kenny is just the best. So concise, so clear, doesn't waste a second, but doesn't miss the tiniest point that is helpful and needed. Thanks Kenny!
But what i dont understand...lets say I comp my verse, chorus etc..do i open a freh track and ad all the new vocal track with my comp verse n chorus of my vocals?
Hi Kenny, I am recording solo jazz guitar. If I have five takes of the same song and each contains minor mistakes, do I use comping or crossfades to put together a version that is error free. Thanks
FAO Kenny...Your videos have been such a help, thanks. But, there is one thing I used to be able to do in Ableton which I can't figure out in Reaper; Is it possible to control the start position, Length and Bar length fields using midi note on or controller messages?
Some settings should be mentioned. When I try this, all takes have the same color. There is no "take n out of 3" indication. The active take is not highlighted. The shortcuts are not active (grey in the right click menu). When I split one take, one part jumps to a random lane.
Is there a way to record overlapping a take without splitting the item where there are other splits? Like for example, if I want to punch in after I save a comp because I wanted to redo something, is there a way to not allow it to split?
What if it's one sound that I'm trying to blend into one? Like let's say I have 3 different takes of a kalimba hit in the same place in the song and I'm trying to avoid using 3 tracks just for that one kalimba hit (that isn't used in the song other than that one hit)
Randomly discovered this feature while playing around with recording over previous takes, which would overwrite the previous take in Ableton Live, which is my home DAW. Now I am considering switching to Reaper full-time because of little user-friendly things like this.
Hi Kenny, is there a way to select the active take with a double click? I think that would be better for not selecting an unwanted take by accident Thanks for your videos
thank you Kenny. I have some questions not relating to this video but its been bothering me for a week already. After I quantize a with 1/16 grid , with two continuous same pitched notes, the playback will skip the second one (happens with ReaSynth, PianoOne, didnt happen on CheezeMachine ) . I have checked theres no overlapping and no sneaky midi events going on
How do you get rid of empty lanes while keeping your takes still open it just looks ugly and when I’m comping a take it’s distracting just a blank empty lane
@Marc-André Beaudet Thank you. I found another video last week or so that explained how to group items so I managed to get it. Was confusing, though, so thanks for the reply.
Im wondering if there is a possibility to turn off recording takes? When im composing ex. solo i wish to record some fragment of it and then another , and another. I dont want to have few takes it causes mess on the track.
I must have changed a setting so that I can't click within the item to split without the cursor. And the behavior of splitting items in other tracks is annoying. I found a workaround that's better for me, anyway. That is to split selection. It actually saves a step and if your track items only are selected, then that's all that gets split. Keyboard shortcut is shift-S.
Not related to the video but i really need help on this one, im using Spitfire Audio Labs on Reaper but when i use instruments that have long sounds (like strings), they just clip randomly. Is there a way to fix this? Thanks in advance :D
What isn't mentioned is that when you stop recording in a lane, Reaper splits it. And how do you glue them back together for one take and not all? And how do you split on only one lane and not them all? The comping sucks in Reaper.
It’s different but no more difficult in ProTools. Take 10 minutes to learn a few keyboard shortcuts and you’ll be blazing past this guy. ProTools has the most robust and efficient comping system of any of the DAWs.

I always learn something new every time I watch your video's!
Great stuff Kenny, really appreciate *all* your tutorials - best Reaper resource on the net!
Excellent video, Kenny!
Fantastic info. Your reaper videos are incredibly helpful!
your tutorials are gold, thank you!
Thank you so much. Your videos are so very helpful.
Wow, thanku! with your constant amazing workrate, innovation and product support, its safe to that the the guys at cockos are with us forever 🔥🤙

Amazing video you rock God bless you 🔥🔥
This is why I use Reaper. The workflow is amazing and the feature set is deep.
This is what made me settle on reaper. It's so easy to comp vocals
Thanks a lot kenny!!!
I like the goat! Please have more musical goats in your videos.

Actually I find I'm just looking at the goat and absorbing nothing. lol.

Is there an option not to split every take when splitting?
Very interesting feature.
Thnx Kenny :)
So helpful! Thank you! Reaper ruuules!
Question: If I wanted to save CPU power and use 'destructive editing" for say, noise reduction of a track how would I do this?
Lol been using Reaper for long time, never thought about this takes. I keep on duplicating tracks for each take. Now my problem is how to do the reverse- put all my 4 separate tracks I have into one so I can do this quick comping. Thanks will give this a try.
When I split at one audio item it's split all other takes. How to make to split only active take? Thanks
Cheers
Thank you.
Is there an option to import media files as a takes? I have got vocal takes from outside the reaper recording session and want to work with them the comp takes way.
TYK !!!
Does it make sense from a workflow standpoint to use slip editing and comping together?
Kenny, I would love to know how you get the edit cursor to stay put while doing these splits. For me, the edit cursor moves every time I mouse click.
Can you make a video editing multiple tracks of takes simultaneously?
Again You help me. Thanks
Great!. Thank you soo much brother and make new video for vocal mixing and mastering with stock plugin please ı am waiting sooo much for this

Yes, see his video called Takes in Reaper, it shows how to punch in exactly as you are asking.
Was doing some of this today. Is there a way to unlock locked takes other than through the actions list?
What if it's one sound that I'm trying to blend into one? Like let's say I have 3 different takes of a kalimba hit in the same place in the song and I'm trying to avoid using 3 tracks just for that one kalimba hit (that isn't used in the song other than that one hit)

Abelton does this, just not by default. The cheapest daw is the one you already own

when I type "s" to split my tracks it splits ALL of my tracks, not just the takes. Am I doing something wrong?
How do you get rid of empty lanes while keeping your takes still open it just looks ugly and when I’m comping a take it’s distracting just a blank empty lane
How do you comp takes from multiple tracks? E.g. a drum set with 12 mics, or a guitar with DI, amp, and effects output recorded to separate tracks?
@Marc-André Beaudet Thank you. I found another video last week or so that explained how to group items so I managed to get it. Was confusing, though, so thanks for the reply.
Can Reaper do this with multiple tracks simultaneously,? ie recording drums? If so, I may ditch Logic once and for all!
Im wondering if there is a possibility to turn off recording takes? When im composing ex. solo i wish to record some fragment of it and then another , and another. I dont want to have few takes it causes mess on the track.
I think there is

My takes are on multiple tracks how can I move them into a single track like your "takes"?
there is an option called "Render Items as New Take"
