Nataraja Pathu - Tamil hymns on Nataraja with English translation - Sridevi Nrithyalaya

- This hymn is a dialogue that the devotee engages in with the Lord. Where all is fair in this inexplicable relationship of the Lord and the devotee, the latter sometimes cries, sometimes chides, at times introspects and at other times, even commands, seeking answers to the questionable transciences and striving to become one with the Lord who is ever in Trance.
In the first stanza, the devotee addresses Nataraja as the omniscient one and intellectually internalises His formless omnipresence. The second stanza is an interesting contradiction as well as a reiteration to the first, where the devotee describes His form and His dance, and also affirms that the movement of the Universe, is but His dance. In the third stanza, the devotee begins the inward journey, introspecting and questioning the Lord about the ephemeral happenings in the world. The next stanza is proof of the devotee's progress in the journey, for it is a clear account of all that s/he doesn't desire or seek. The following fifth stanza witnesses a devotee who takes liberty to mock the Lord of His indifference. In the sixth stanza, the devotee goes one step closer to the Lord and holds Him responsible for all the misdeeds of the former. In the process of this journey, the following stanza sees maturity in the devotee who seems to have realised the pain of the endless cycle of births and deaths. To be relieved of the incessant circle of life, in the eighth stanza, the devotee pleads the Lord to forgive her/him for all the wrong doings, however grave or silly it may be. The ninth stanza is the voice of a devotee who gradually gathers strength and develops a detachment towards relationships, wealth, fame and power. The Lord chooses the devotee and He alone lays down the path for the devotee unto Him. In that very path, there could be phases of introspection, doubtfulness, realisation, conviction and certainly, hopelessness. The last stanza is an open cry to the Lord from a devotee who feels hopeless, helpless and cheated by the Lord's indifference. Having known that He is the one who pervades the Universe as the five elements, the devotee now truly realises and experiences His omnipresence, which is metaphorically depicted as the five forms of the Lord (in His Panchabhootha Kshetras) as Ekambreshwara (Earth), Jambukeshwara (Water), Arunchaleswara (Fire), Srikālahasthiswara (Wind) and Nataraja (Ether). Now, what other way does the devotee have, but to surrender? It is when the devotee completely surrenders, that the Lord appears.
We have interpreted this hymn as an inward journey of the Self: a journey unto Him.

I'm American, yet as a child I always hated religion and especially the idea that I didn't exist..at 4 years old I knew I always existed and loved dead birds.. I felt a stranger in my own home.
I bit anyone who came near me. Every time I closed my eyes I saw a window.
My mom and I had a moment before she died. I knew she was on her way to a new family. I told her she was coming home, and mentioned my son's name.. she said "'Hendrix ' I always liked that name" I wonder in her next life if she will remember that name. Oddly I feel I've been around this at one time in my many many lives.. The music, the dancing, the ideas.. You made me feel closer to a mother I don't remember. You made me feel closer to a father that loved me yet I can't recall. I was surrounded by family for just one moment, it felt like home. Thank you.
As a Bharatanatyam dancer (Alaripu level), a hindu and a tamil speaker, I am surprised to see so many people from different origins appreciate our culture. But truly, the dancers and the musicians and the singer did a wonderful job. I can’t imagine how long the choreography must have taken. Everyone was fantastic and graceful. The expressions of all the dancers especially were very descriptive of the lyrics. Amazing performance.
Recently i had a talk with a Bharatanatyam dancer who did 300 performances across 30 countries :) check it out & share your comments.

How beautiful India!
As a citizen of neighbour country,i really admire the Indian culture n India dance.May India, where civilization began, continue to exist
From Myanmar
I am from France and I cannot express how deep the beauty of your ways of praising your Lord touches me.
We have beautiful ways to express our faith and our love for our lord. Dance form is one way. Music in the form of bhajans (group singing), classical music and playing instruments are other ways.. This particular dance form shown here is called Bharatanatyam which’s more than 2500 year old.
This is pure Hindu culture, art, dance, music, aesthetics etc. Nothing remotely Abrahamic in it. Proud to be Hindu, the oldest, purest continuous culture in the entire world.

@@Reincarnation111 Precisely.
English atheist here, the music was lovely and the dancing spectacular, but it was the text that really grabbed me. I loved the mixture of praise, doubt and confusion with a positive ending. There was none of the bland victoriousness of hymns, it was a proper analysis. With great music and dance too.
Clearly you don’t know many hymns. 🙄 But the need to put one religion down to praise another is annoying.
its not so much about putting one religion down as much as about just putting christianity down
@@Hyoungje Some great Christian poetry that deals with doubt, book of Ecclesiastes is a brilliantly questioning work - but it must be said that there are a lot of 'I love God and have no problems' hymns and songs. I only pick on Christianity because that's what I know and grew up with.
@@GrubStLodger that’s the problem. You assume you’ve experienced Christianity, when in fact you’ve experienced Christianity through the interpretation of it by those around you. The thing about religion is that it is bigger than a single view/interpretation. As far as the “I love God and have no problem,” even in the non-religious community the virtues of focusing on the positive and trusting in love is natural. Focusing only on the negative wither no hope of change accomplishes nothing.
@@GrubStLodger I am a Indian Hindu person and I agree. But, I don't think u have put down Christianity in any way to praise Hinduism. But, I think the viciousness that u are referring to, are hymns frm the Bible to idolaters. But believe me, we Hindus don't see Christians as enemies but as friends and people who appreciate culture, the tumultuous past is over. Although I agree, Hindu religion is really very tolerant and even the Geeta, the "face" of Hinduism is a secular work for all religions, there are some problems with our social structure as well, the heridtary caste system which got corroded frm the actual varna system based on occupation, we are largely rectifying it now.
In Hinduism, we have always got freedom to question God, like I am athiest too and athiesm is also a part of Hinduism frm 2000 yrs, but I only affliate with Hindu culture. Some Christians can broaden their mindset, acceptance is a big way since it equalizes everyone and lets go of ego. Atleast, Christians can be broad minded to various subjects, Jews even more, but with Muslims, it is totally different.
So beautiful. im from Holland and just was thinking it is a blessing that the culture of India keeps this materialistic world in balance.☯️

Nope not underrated at all. It's the brainwashing Indians have done to their own people through their film industries. Are Bisnhpriya different from Meitei now. My understanding is both follow Hindu religion. I just read your other post here where you have explained in detail about Bishnupriyas. Now the meiteis and kukis are fighting. Other Indians should know the northeast history also to seriously understand what is happening in Manipur.
@@TheAnuc hm.. bishnupriyas and meiteis are quite different..
While we have lived with them in kangleipak(Manipur) they don't consider us the same...
It is racial hatred between each of us..
They eat pork ,beef everything.
But since our guru's revival the Bhuvaneswar sadhu thakur we completely moved towards Vaishnavism , our love for shiva is the same...
But meiteis are a critical case ..
They're still stuck in old glory and follows the present titular king like ducklings...
But in reality he is nothing more but a joke..
Some meiteis have been following the vaishnav dharma or Hindu dharma but many of the meiteis hate that they want sanamahism to return ,they have got some strange theories about a Bengali brahmin who baptised the king garib nawab (it Is a title not true name) and advised him to burn their meiteilon puya(the religious education books which were composed in the sangamam age.) While we doubt that coz u see today's NE issues are nothing but Nehru's gift for us and Congressis burden ...
Nehru made the church enter here and rewrite our history making us the natives who fled away from meitei tribe for protecting our women and children just a FOREIGN IMPURE RACE who is trying to copy them while it's a falsehood they believe it wholeheartedly they call us THIEVES ,IMPOSTERS etc. WHILE WE DID LEFT THE MEITEI LANGUAGE COZ WE WERE HARMED BY AND WISHED TO DO NOTHING WITH THEM , we are still the native tribe of Manipur. And similarly the Brits and Church changed most of the history and now the Meiteis are systematically manipulating the remaining last imprints of us since congress era and Thnx to congress's corruption and incompetence they have succeeded in creating a history which is *THEIRS* own fairytale a utopia................. But leaving our language greatly helped us survive in all across the subcontinent.. we live in small patches in bangladesh,Tripura,Assam, Tripura Meghalaya, Mizoram,Manipur(only few they are too being chased since the 2000s), Maharashtra (coz when Maratha army came in Bengal we were held captives and taken to the centre),Punjab learning their language this we now are different in language and culture our love for Krishna is what binds us..
Hi, this is shaivism tradition dance. Thanks for your towards our culture ❤
This moved me to tears. As a Catholic Christian by birth I believe in the soul yearning to be one and being humbled in front of the almighty - which my religion and every religion at its heart aims to achieve. @@SheelaUnniSrideviNrithyalaya I don't know if our journey in life is supposed to tell us the answers until we meet our god of death. I take care of my mother who is suffering from a very strange form of disability and I have to watch her transform into a person I barely recognize while still having to remind myself she is my mother and I love her dearly. She is so beautiful and calm in her decline. She has made peace and lives being herself unapologetically. She is so beautiful and calm all of the time....I prey she finds peace in her afterlife. And I will do my best to send her off with the love and cherishing she deserves! I think that is human. I think if there is a god that can hear and see our actions, that he would smile on that kind of love.
I think that is the love that is needed more on this world. We all deserve to feel cherished in life and sent off with honour from our fellow Earthly family, friends, neighbours and creatures that share the same space and breath of the god of life. In TRUE Christianity, we are taught that life is the breath of god. Any life you harm is hurting god himself. You are taught that your body is a temple of god. His breath lives in you and every wrong doing is also a wrong doing to god himself. Any wrong doing you do to another living creature is also a sin against god's temple. This Earth is his temple and we continue to forget how we are abolishing his and our home. We are seen as his beloved children....yet we are being tested because he's given us so many chances to prove ourselves.
He keeps giving us chances but we know deep inside the truth... we ignore him every day...we lie to ourselves in our fear of trusting him. This is his temple and we've ransaccd it like a bunch of drunk unlawful teenagers! Life (GOD) wants to live. Death needs to take what it needs to give back to life so it can continue to live. That's what I see for now. I'm only in my 20's but I hope I can discover more in my path as I age and hope I can bring comfort and spread as much love as I can before my maker comes to take me back home.

This is so beautiful and wonderfully performed. To be able to read along is truly bringing my appreciation of the culture, religion, dance and music to a whole new level. THANK YOU!
How open to self-questioning the Hindu philosophy is can be seen in these hymns!
In the hymns maybe but in reality people don’t like to be challenged … ego is the biggest obstacle
@@skyward7903 there’s a lot of Nationalists that project the opposite and have an aggressive approach towards minority groups and lack of tolerance for Muslims. I wish humans could focus on PRACTICE vs ego/ideology
@@rainforestsanctuary-sounds6489 yeah, present Hinduism is too Abrahamised, due to continuous Abrahamic influences.
@@rainforestsanctuary-sounds6489lol ......Hinduism doesn't like to be challenged and is turning abrahamic?? Stones are pelted on Hindus during rath yatra, many Christian and muslim neighbours make fun of my religion in front of me and I smile at their ignorance. Every week their is a political party insulting , abusing and talking about the eradication of my faith which is 78% of India . Yet we stay level headed. The judiciary , the administration and the centre does nothing and asks us to be tolerant as it's Hindus responsibility to maintain peace. If we so much as question abrahamic faiths it's blasphemy , intolerance, death of democracy , majoritarian rule so we shut up and go through it. And here are ppl comparing us to a faith which beheaded two minor children in the month of Ramadan cause it was written in their holy scripture.👏👏
I don't know Tamil language... but there is no language to understand dance, music and expression..🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳❤❤❤
Thanks for adding the translation; this was able to speak to me on a deeper level than just appreciation for a certain culture. Love the holistic wisdom of Eastern religions. "You are the five elements, right from the earth to ether. You are the universe."
The English subtitles! 😭❤️ Thank you so, so much. Romba nandri. (I'm learning, but don't know enough yet!) 😊 Being able to understand fully this meaning, brings this dance to a whole new level for me & other English speakers. Like many others, I was also in tears watching this. So moving, every single aspect of this play. 😭❤️
I will be sharing this with my Thamizh father-in-law tonight. My dream is to take amma & appa, my husband & entire family to see a Sheela ma'am production in person. ❤️🙏
Everyone who contributed to this beautiful, moving performance, bless you all! 😭❤️ Thank you, so much.
Thank you for your wonderful words of appreciation 🙏🏽

That was so Amazing and touched me deeply. This embodies universal spirituality ❤️
The camera work, the set, and of course the talented dancers. What an excellent presentation, SDN you are taking barathanatyam to new heights!
🙏🏽
I have watched this dozens of times. It's one of the most beautiful pieces of art I've ever seen. I grew up in Tamil Nadu but was not deeply exposed to it's rich culture. And I miss it of course. Beautiful message, lyrics, dancers, singer, musicians, and tabla. Thank you!
ஐம்புலன்களையும் கட்டுக்குள் வைத்து விட்டது....அற்புத படைப்பிற்கு கோடி நன்றி... உயிரை கரைக்கும் வரிகள்.....
This is an absolutely amazing production. The lyrics summarise some key aspects of Hindu philosophy based on the Bakthi Yoga. The dancers bring out the emotions and the devotion that underlies it all in a spectacular fashion. The singer's voice and tone bring out the underlying emotions very effectively. I was moved to tears. Simply the best 'Barathanatyam' performance I have ever seen. Thank you for making this available.

This is South Indian
As a Hispanic person I try to think if I'm familiar with similar dances in Latin America and I can't think of anything. Sure, Latin American cultures are rich but Indian culture is very unique and maybe incomparable. Cheers!
Nowadays we are also struggling to keep our culture alive and kicking .. what with the younger generation more into materialistic stuff, competitiveness etc is making them move away from our culture. Only those with extreme passion are pursuing which is very few..
,
Thank you, for this beautiful video. Colonisation has colonised our Indian minds. I am trying to decolonise, your video helped me a lot.

What a presentation. Dear Guru and the disciples, i dont have words to talk about the perfection and the performance. A rare feat. Literally Lord Nataraja has Graced the performance. He danced in every participant. What a variety, what a costume, etc etc. The song, the musician, the artists, the setting, the dancers perfection, simply splendid. My pranams to every one of you. I am shedding tears of happiness after witnessing such a unique marvellous dance performance. Love u all.
Each and every moment, we too were in tears when we were doing this project….

Now I want to travel to India to see this in person. What a performance !
You don’t need to move to India. Bharatanatyam is practiced by many Indians around the world, including me. No matter where you live, it is likely that there is some performance of Bharatanatyam in your city/state.
@@harini218 what problem you will have if he visits to india?😠
You are always welcome.☺️
Please come
Every single dancer was superb, even the palanquin bearers. Absolutely virtuoso! I wish sub-titles could be reproduced in live performances as holograms and the world will watch and be entranced ‼️

A stunning performance, Ladies. I cannot say enough about your skill, grace, beauty and dedication.
I am speechless. Adding this one to my Favorites ,list.
Dear dancers of श्री देवी नृत्यालय।
I have been watching this performance for the past entire month. Every time I watch it, it has kept me glued at watching the entire performance from the start to end. Hats off to the musicians who have sung and played to accompany your performance. The music playing in the background has the power to keep the audience spellbound and nailed to watch the entire performance. Very mesmerizing. This performance is an epitome of your devotion. I pray that the Great नटराज showers you all with his blessings. Keep it up, keep dancing and stay blessed.
I bow down to you. नमस्कारम् 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Will need to watch a few times. As a non devotee, I find the hymn to be deeply moving. Thank you.

Will need to watch many many times, it is so uplifting, beautiful, engrossing, lovely, divine...
Same tho, the meanings are thoughtful and really deep. I already saved this one. Thank you for this awfully majestic performance to all the team :)
Om nama Shivaya!! Very moved! My adoration to you all!
Realmente no tengo palabras...me conmovió profundamente
Stunned, Speech less, and Surrendered to all artists. Big salute to the organiser and the Director. You all brought Lord Nataraja alive to us.
Just divine. My eyes greeted this superb display of storytelling, costumes, dancers, musicians, singers and choreography with tears of joy.
These women are absolutely hypnotizing to watch as they share with such grace and beauty an unending and unyieldingly gorgeous art. This is a delight! Brava
Thank you for adding English subtitles. I enjoyed The production. Super talent shown by all of the Dancers. Sending all our Prayers of protection & health. The Jackson's Papillion Ne.
love this kind of dances its such a great art form, full of facial expression and imagery with there dancing
The well-thought out and beautifully composed choreography reflects the divinity of the songs. The quiet melodious voice of the singer in sync with the accompanying instruments slowly makes the listeners sink into the divinity of the verses. The solo performers excel in expressions with perfect and beautiful movements. The six girls of the troupe carrying the idol of the Lord deserve special mention. Their graceful movements back and forth combined with the measured circumambulation for every stanza of the song and their continued facial expressions despite their place on the stage add up piquancy to the programme as a whole.
I have watched this wonderful devotional offering so many times... i don't understand the symbology but, with the subtitles l really am beginnining to love and appreciate Nataraja Pathu. Well done to all at S.D.N.! Inspired indeed, even the the English translation is beautiful - thank you Dear Bhairavi and Harinie. With much love and gratitude, Richard
