Joey, you took on a hard task starting a kayak business when other kayak businesses were closing. You tried to shake up an industry that seems to be stuck in a bit of a rut and having trouble figuring out how to move forward. I think you have helped show how great really well built kayaks can be. I hope the industry takes some inspiration from what you have demonstrated is possible and we see other manufacturers offering better kayaks in the future. Have fun paddling.
Nick, the whole industry is struggling right now. I don't know who said it, but if you can mold a plastic septic tank, you can also mold a kayak. I don't think most people value quality anymore since we have been conditioned to buy cheap for most products and then replace when it breaks in a year or two. Sad, but true.
Good luck to you, brother. You've made beautiful boats and impacted a lot of people. You should be proud of both of those things. It's time you put you first.
I bought Rodney Sigrist's old Capella that you fixed up for him. It only has a few chips and scratches that have developed since he had not been paddling much. I had hoped to use the heck out of it over the next few years and send it back to you to be made new again. I really appreciate the work that you have done. None of us who are growing and learning are the same person we were last year, so I hope your heeling process bring you to a new you that you enjoy.
I am so emotional at the moment. My heart feels for you. I know as a cancer survivor that there is a new normal and it is hard to find it sometimes. 15+ years later, I am still experimenting to find the stability of a new normal. I am sorry I missed purchasing one of your kayaks. BUT I would prefer the have the opportunity to paddle with you instead. You and Lesley are in my heart and I’m glad you have each other through the closing of the chapter and opening of a new one.
Dude! This is hard to hear but personally im glad you’re doing this for yourself. You get one life and there are no do-overs. I’ve always loved the boat and was hoping to demo one soon. As far as a legacy, you have created one, for everyone that purchased or planned to purchase one. Thank you for everything you’ve done for the community.
Joey so gutted to see this video, after someone mentioned you were shutting at kiptopeke last month. You've been on my mind a lot, i really hope this next phase is glorious for you and your people. All the very best to you. Ed
So sad, another grand kayak, and an amazing kayak maker will no longer be in business. All the best to you. I am glad though you are putting your health 1st!
Joey, you are amazing. I am honored to have met you & to own one of your boats…your spirit is built into every Petrel. One door closes, and another door opens… best of luck on your new journey.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ always choose your happiness & health first. All the best to you Leslie and your peers at turning point. You're lucky to have lived your dream and provide ppl your lovely boats. I hope to come across one and request 10 minutes from its owner. Rest up heal up, paddle on & Shine on ✨✨✨
@@robertnissenbaum thank you. I had hoped to have enough $ to place an order next year. If you ever tire of one you know where to find me. Cheers Robert
Love you, brother. A weight is being lifted and you have a new start. Take full advantage of it. I hope this means you and I can paddle together more. Afterall, paddling is where the passion started with all of us. You have my 100% support, so call if I can help with anything.
I’ve watched with interest from afar, spurred on by local friend Campbell B and their gorgeous black Play. Far more experienced biz types can comment about that aspect but I’m coming from the burnout side of things. I hope you don’t overdo things at the new gig . The clarity of thought and perspective that comes from true rest & recovery can be like going from a black & white life to one filled with colour. Your legacy is a powerful and indelible one; there is much to be said for that. Happy paddling, Joey.
I know you will always do what is right for you and your health. I have seen you achieve your goals both professionally and personally. I am a better person for having you as our chosen family. The boys and I will always support and love you and Leslie!
I have been watching from afar due to some common friends in the composites biz. I feel you! Been running a specialty instrument biz for 22 years 16+ indie full time (California uphill no less!) . I know the personal toll that comes with it! God bless and thanks for inspiring!
Thanks for sharing as tough as it is. Taking care of yourself is tough and this is may help others. Paddle a lot. I guess I will have to build a clc petrel play now unless you can get a good bunch to take over 😊
Joey, It's time to live your best life. I often lament the same thing...being cut off from friends and living everything "virtually". This bold step is awesome. Watch out, because one day I'm going to do the same thing brother!
Joey, I was honored that I was able to see your shop and grateful that you took time to give me a tour. I could feel your passion and your love for kayaks. It is extremely sad to hear this news, but I understand your reasons. You build beautiful boats and you accomplished something great. Whatever your life will take you on your new chapter, you can look back that you created a legacy that will live for a long time. Your boats are beautiful and they will be on the water for decades to come that bring enjoyment to their owners. You did that, you bring joy to many. Looking forward to see you on the water. Please take care of yourself. You are not alone.
Nice post. Bravo for choosing yourself and your family. No 2 strokes are the same, my experience is similar with the brain rewiring and coming to grips with the "new" me, which is ok too
Wow, first off can't fault you at all for taking care of yourself. Thanks so much for all you have shared and contributed. One of your boats has been a dream for me and I've followed your whole journey, I was waiting on my getting the finances sorted. It will remain the gold standard. I learned long ago that the best transitions require a "managed ending" and a "new beginning". It sounds like that is what you are planning to do. There is lots to celebrate as part of the "managed ending", and lots of good things you can choose to bring forward for the "new beginning" (while leaving the parts you don't want behind). Many thanks again, and hoping that one day I'll get to paddle with you.
Also, how fucking great is it that you recognized the need for, and sought out help for some of the consequences of the stroke. Again, infinite respect!
It took guts--to post this very honest video, and to leave comments on. Hopefully you can see the support network you have. I wish you the best. I appreciate your comment about your passion and thinking about the person while building. That hits deeply.
Really sorry you’ve experienced this much stress. Being immersed in your passion can be such a curse. ( as an arborist/self employed I feel like I could make this video a couple times a month ) I hope that a pull back can help you to find the joy and balance in your life again. Your work is beautiful!
It’s very brave to change paths … I wish you the best with your health and in your new simple life. Congratulations for making the right decision for you and your family ❤
You do beautiful work and your ethics exemplary! Thanks for sharing your personal experience from the healing process from a stroke on 😊the emotional aspect that I’ve never considered…. Life is too short. Hope you get lots of paddles ahead of you with family and friends. Best wishes 😊 Bet once you get start paddling for your own sake again, you’ll find your center again. ;) … If you’re ever in NYC again, stop by the Sebago Canoe Club for a paddle out on Jamaica Bay.
I watched your YT video and am so impressed by your honesty and humility. Good for you for putting your health first. I will always remember your willingness to put in my bilge pump holder and to order my boat cover, which arrived yesterday! Just returned from Kiptopeke; what a great (and challenging) three days with good people. I rolled (with assistance) for the first time. Wild resilience and Wonder. I hope your next chapter is all that you hope! Thanks for putting your good energy into my boat, The Alice in Wonderland! May you have health and balance and love in your life.
No one should expect you to do for them instead of enjoying what you do, what gives you the desire and passion to do for them in the first place, probably a name best forgotten
Wow! That is huge! You will be missed as a presence in the boatbuilding world but hopefully you will still show up from time to time at paddling events. For selfish reasons, I'm glad you didn't make this move before my boat got crushed, and then resurrected thanks to you and your team. Really though, I'm just glad that you didn't get so buried in the shit that you couldn't find your way out. Most of the forces that act on us - our place and trajectory in life - favor stasis. You have my infinite respect for having the chutzpah / balls, whatever it is, to say no and chart a new course. Good fortune to you in all your future endeavors!

This video touched me personally as a fellow kayak business owner. I totally get it. Go paddle and be happy. Ted.

Sorry to hear you're closing up shop. I had a carbon Petrel on my wish list. Looks like an awesome boat.

Удачи Джоуи, я думаю вы принимаете правильное решение.
An old man said to me..."This is not a rehearsal...enjoy your life and those around you."
Hard to survive building one type of kayak.
Well your health is #1 good luck. Sell the business if it's profitable. Your partner won't buy it? God bless. Every business is cut throat.
Your health at stake refund the deposits with a few points of interest added. Forget about building stragglers go be happy.
Dont take any more jabs
