Maybe cgc will think cover whitening is ok when ccs can start profiting from it. 😂

This guy seems far too concerned with the value of books. His job and his company's job is to GRADE them- nothing more. Notate the book as cleaned and let the people decide. What collectors place more value on should be of no concern to CGC and it definitely shouldn't influence their practices.

If you wihitened the cover and I KNOW about it....I see it as altering the book....I would NOT want it.

One thing that makes me mad about CGC grading is when they grade a book with slightly or plain rust on staple(s). They know full well that over time the rust will continue to degrade the book as their holder isn't air proof. So after a few years after you bought a book with rust on staples you might end up with a book that has rust migration under those staples because as it get more rusted it relaese oils into the fibers of the cover and then in interior pages too !!!!
So they grade books knowing full well that their grade WON'T hold after a few years as rust will have downgraded the book and furthermore the damage will be irreversible too. And as CGC don't want people to change staples EVEN if those are vintage staples unless you want a PLOD shouldn't they disclose on their label when a book as rusted staples EVEN if it's slight OR at least let people change staples and put the book in the Conserved category OR regular label if it'S very well done and using vintage staples? At least the books people will buy won't deteriorate over time just because there was rust or a hint of it on 1 or more staples???

$5.00 that stance on whitening books will change the moment they or cbcs starts to offer that service or as we have seen there profits take another big dip and they have to change the way they view grading and get people to send their purple books back in for grading to get blue labels.
So then whitening books will be perfectly ok as long as it improves there bottom dollar.

WHY is Mr. Nelson going on and on about coins first off. Coins don’t apply to comics We are not over here trying to make our comic books look older either…smh. He spoke candidly about all sorts of crap, but merely touched on comics topics. If you’re going to interview, somebody don’t let them dictate the entire conversation.
For instance, Like him talking to scientists about chemical reactions on paper!!! Bruh, don’t you think that deserves questioning at minimum …totally a one-sided interview.

Glad to hear that whitening is in this early acceptance stage. It isn't completely frowned upon but within reason. Funny, I belonged to the original Facebook group that pioneered the BLED whitening effects. And to see where it is now (started in late 2021/early 2022). I used to play around with whitening but is very tricky! Fun to play around and see a book improve within matching aging with Interior pages. And the interior pages should ideally be whitened too if they're off white matching with cover. So glad you got Matt Nelson to talk about this! Thanks Mickey! - Erwin

Thanks for this conversation, Mickey! I've been doing my own cleaning and pressing for a few years now and have even tried the whitening techniques discussed in this video. After a few purple labels, I've definitely learned to dial back (from 100% to 50-75%) on just about everything, including whitening. If you can manage to make a book look cleaner, sharper, and more vivid, but still keep that slightly aged, creamy look, that's the safe, sweet spot.

How did you learn how to clean and press? What pressing machine and cleaning materials do you use? I was thinking about learning how to do it myself instead of using ccs or third party pressers.

    • @Fin-gj2th
      @Fin-gj2th 3 месяца назад

Yikes, they won't ever do that. Results are too varied on year of.book and so many other variables. My own presser, one of the best in the biz, Barry, the legend, who has been interviewed by Swagglehaus cant tell me that, that only it WILL improve appeal. Grade bump is what everyone hopes for, but nobody can guarantee that!!!

If you crack out a 9.6 to go for a 9.8 if you send in the label the grader will already be looking at the book as a 9.6. Whats the incentive to send in the label? A accurate census isn't enough incentive for a CPR junky

There is no difference between pressing and a book that spent 3 months under a stack of books.
Same with blue light. No difference between a book that got sun bleached in storefront and blue light.
How natural it looks and feels is the best answer I have ever heard.

For scarce books where CGC census is more impactful books can usually be photo matched. Older, scarce books have many more flaws and variation in presentation, wrap, stains, tears, etc. CGC photographing every graded book should allow photo matching for resubmissions and removing duplicates from the census (if they care to do it). Keeping these scans public (as they are doing now) is very helpful.

One of my favourite FF covers was 73 (Daredevil, Thor, Spiderman).
When I see it reproduced with a stark white background I can't help but feel I preferred the (N.Mint) copy I owned back in the day which had a slightly creamy background.
I would swear that there was nothing wrong with my copy.
Maybe copies later off the press changed colour slightly - in which case what was the 'Correct' background colour?
Cream looked great, White looks bleached.
I bought mine new so there was no Jiggery-pokery involved, I'm sure.

PS to the above (Regarding background colour variations) I am British and bought just about every 60s Marvel comic but don't recall that Marvel Chipping was a problem either.
Maybe the UK really did get the early run copies (First off the press)?
If so they would possibly be the more collectible copies if not for the bloody awful Pence pricing ('9d' rather than '12c'.)

They really should get rid of ugly purple label and combine with the grey stripe / conserved label. Very similar categories - one label restored / conserved that presents nicely. Defects/alterations are always described.

I disagree. The purple label should stand out from the other grading classifications in an obvious way, as it's the single most detractor in regards to value.
