    Being a minimalist, I use a common tea saucer and only about six colors + titanium white. I mix shades in the flat bottom and just wipe it out with a wet paper towel.

    My dream palette wish list was virtually the same and I bought myself the Stephen Quiller ceramic palette (available from Jacksons in UK). 24 sloping wells (with no ridge) arranged in a circle with an extra 8 well in the corners; Large mixing area in the middle. It is large and heavy (3kg!) but works well on a wooden lazy Susan. The lid is a bit flimsy but it keeps the dust out. love it but not for traveling!

      I wish someone would make the Stephen Quiller palette without the corners. That was my original go-to palette, but I have short arms and am a klutz, so reaching over my palette is always a disaster. LOL

    Thank you for showing your new palette. I was very impressed with it and I bought one and love it. I set mine too in the manner of a color wheel. I used freezer tape and wrote the paint colors on the tape and placed each piece on the outside of the palette color. I also down loaded the pallet placing sheet from the Robax site and wrote the colors down on it for further information. I am using this palette for all my favorite Daniel Smith paints. It is well worth the expense. Thank you for all your suggestions and videos.

    Louise, I adore your paintings. You are so patient and so amazingly talented.
    It is also helpful with the Robax palettes to use masking or artist tape and put the name of the pigment or paint color on the outside of the wells until you remember which color is where.
    Thank you for sharing your art with us.♥️

    I can recommend using a tape style label-maker to add the pigment code (or name) to your new palette. It’s sticky enough to stay still even if splashed, but you can peel them off if you change the wells around later on.

    Thank you, Louise, for making this palette happen and sharing it with us. I had been looking at the Robax palettes for some time but felt the wells were too deep, and with the way I work could imagine a lot of water and pigments collecting in the bottom, so took a pass. Found your video and knew this is the one for me. The upper area for pigments are perfectly sized for my working methods. So easy to keep pigments clean,. I haven't had it long, but so far I've discovered my "dirty" pigments flow down giving me my most frequently used mixes in the basins of the wells. It's a very versatile palette! There's room to squeeze in a dab of pigment below of a frequent mixer. I do think the wells could be half as deep. AND made of porcelain would be a dream come true. Love your videos, BTW. Thoughtful, educational and well organized. Thanks again!

    Louise, I think if you put the paint right above the line of that upper ridge, so that it's mounded--slightly raised above it--and fills the bottom of the groove formed by the upper well from side to side, you should be able to do your spray bottle trick. Perhaps not with the spray bottle (because I think you want the upper portion to remain relatively dry), but with a pipette dribbled over it, for sure. That might save a lot of time from pulling it down with your brush.

    • @LouiseDeMasi

      Thanks Glori. I just read the comment above from Jennifer. I think what she said is a good idea with this one. I need to put more paint in mine so that the paint sits above the ridges. Then when the paint gets dirty I can just squirt it with my spray bottle like I do my little ceramic palette. 😊

    I really enjoyed watching you put down the colors! In this new palette, would you have preferred NOT to have the ridges in each well, so that water could flow freely away from the blobs of paint? (I can see that even dipping your brush to transfer color into the clean water reservoirs will inevitably leave some water in the upper paint compartment, but maybe as long as it does not contact the main paint blob, that's okay?) I still think you could get a potter to make you exactly what you would want, in porcelain... Thanks for sharing your delight in your new palette!

    I've been needing a new palette for quite a while now (washed holes in my 20 year old Robert E. Wood palette) but have been holding off because I couldn't find anything in the art supply stores that fit my needs and this is the closest to what I'm looking for. After 2+ years do you still enjoy using it all the time and does the material stain badly over the years? Great palette and video.

    I've been on the fence for awhile concerning the Robax palettes. They seemed overwhelming and too many wells. I just received the 24 sloping well palette that you came up with and can't wait to choose my colors. I have wayyyy more tubes of colors than will fit into this, but it seems much more manageable. Besides, I'm trying to work from limited color palettes and triads in my paintings. I think mixing your colors from a limited palette is much more synergistic. Thanks for this video and suggestions.

    I just signed up for your Skillshare classes. I am so excited. I currently only have Dr Ph Martin Radiant Watercolors. They do not perform the same as pan and tube paints. I looking to invest into purchasing tubes. You seem to use mostly DS & WN brands. I am curious as to why you prefer those over some of the other brands. I am in the US and have access to most of the brands, but W&N is the most costly. Do you have a suggestion as to a good starting set of colors and brand. Or would it be better to purchase the tubes you suggest on Skillshare as I go along? As a side note I’ve also noticed that of the watercolorist youtubers I follow W&N, DS, & Sennelier seemed to be the most favored. I was set to purchase a large pan set of Sennelier (as I can get a big variety or colors at a very reasonable price via Jacksons), but I am second guessing myself. I appreciate any advice you may offer. Thanks, Tina

    • @LouiseDeMasi
      @LouiseDeMasi  4 года назад +3

      Hi Tina, Thank you, I'm happy that you have joined Skillshare. I hope you get a lot from the classes on there. I don't really prefer them over others. As you know good quality art supplies are expensive so I've purchased W & N and DS and that's what I continue to use. I'm happy with both of them so I haven't bought any other brands other than a few Schmincke colours when they were on sale. So I can't recommend any other brands because I haven't tried them myself. I also stick to these two brands because of all my students. They do a class of mine and many of them buy the colours and then they'll do another class of mine, and another etc, so I don't want to keep switching brands and colours for their sake. Both WN and DS are good quality paints and that's what you want right from the start. You only use a small amount and you don't waste watercolour paint like you do acrylic or oil colours. I hope that helps you decide what to do.

    Hi Louise. I’ve just found your channel as it came up in my feed. I’ve subbed because your videos seem so clear and instructional. One question I have is that I was always told to paint with a limited palette, say 2 of each primary a warm and a cool and to get all your colours from mixing them. This is supposed to keep your paintings harmonious. I understand it’s your style to have so many colours but do you feel it affects the final result. This is not in any way a criticism as I haven’t yet seen much of your work, just a general and genuine query

    • @LouiseDeMasi
      @LouiseDeMasi  4 года назад +1

      Hi! Thank you. Using a limited palette is always good practice and an excellent way to keep your painting harmonious. I rarely mix colours on my palette - I tend to use them as they are and I'll blend different colours on the palette. My paintings are usually created from a limited palette. I don't use all the colours on my palette in one painting. They are there ready for when I need them. You can view my paintings on my website. www.louisedemasi.com 💜

    Dear Louise, hope you are still enjoying your palette, several months later!
    Maybe you have already found a solution for cleaning plastic palettes, but just in case you haven't - you can rub the area with a polymer eraser, that will rub off most of the stains surprisingly well (I learned this tip from youtuber Eve Bolt - Art & Cats).
    The one problem with this method, is that it's hard to wipe off the eraser dust, it very stubbornly sticks to the plastic. If the palette is empty (or has a removable tray like yours) it can just be taken to the sink and washed, but in case you have paint all around the mixing area (learning from my mistakes!) - be careful not to let the little eraser crumbs get in your paint, and use a kneaded eraser to dab and pick them all up! Hope this is helpful.
    Thank you Louise for your wonderful paintings and explanations, you have stunning work on your website! :-)

    You have an extensive list of W&N watercolors, and I considered buying some of the ones I don’t have (which is quite a few!). I can see where these colors are perfect for flowers. But what about the birds and other animals you paint? Which colors do you use for them? I’ve tried looking through your videos, and I can’t find anything that talks about actual colors students should have, as well as the ones they might want to add for convenience. From everything I’ve seen (same for acrylics), artists tend to have their own favorites. I love your work, so I would consider buying additional colors you recommend.

    • @LouiseDeMasi
      @LouiseDeMasi  4 года назад

      Thanks Anne. I use a lot of earthy colours when I paint animals but it depends on the animal. Birds come in so many different colours like flowers. I use a big range of colours for them. I don't mix a lot of colours so that's why I have a large range. Most of the mixing I do is on the paper rather than the palette.

    I am intrigued by this palette, but I too prefer ceramic. I am concerned about staining - even some good plastic palettes eventually seem to succumb to staining. How is this one holding up for you? Recently I found something that may be worth a try. It doesn't have a cover, but the lid from a similar sized cardboard box would do (if it was just sitting on a desk). I found a round ceramic deviled egg tray on amazon.ca tinyurl.com/vnrskys (I'm in Canada). The wells look deep enough for sure and a little blob of paint would sit nicely on the apex of each teardrop shape.... Maybe????
