1. Spectrum towers are able to charge each other for higher damage (try to do it on enemy units).
2. Tesla Coil + Tesla Trooper = additional range and damage.
@PanzerFauz yes but its different, dunno why tower in RA2 is lot smarter, see my comment above.
Also in RA2 there is no charge cancel, if target unit dies, tower will target next one without canceling the charge.

Tesla Coils powered by a trooper or Stingray are also able to function even in low power.
also when enemy units are nearby the unit being attacked by spectrum tower, the beam refracts and hits everything around targeted enemy unit.

Fun fact: The soviets (real ones) did actually make a device that could project lightning. It was for anti-aircraft purposes, but it was stupid expensive to fire due to the energy costs. Also it was difficult to aim/direct accurately.

Soviet Tesla Coils ftw! Plus, keep in mind that Soviets have the Super reactor so it's much easier to power them while the other 2 faction's power plants have lower output.
Prism towers were insane in ra2. Three prism towers can one hit an apocalypse tank. Anyone remember defend the pentagon mission. That was a light show.☺

my opinion after play them, generally giga fortress>kirov>harbinger
a unit giga fortress alone can do a lot of damage to the base and long distance attack

+ Fastest Recharge Time
~ Refraction can deal splash damage
- Lowest overall armour/health
- Damage Type is quite bad at infantry
- Lowest overall damage (single)
Wave Force Tower:
+ Highest Overall Damage
+ Damage Type is very strong against heavy armour
+ Very good against en masse due to Wave Force Penetration
~ Recharge is slower than Spectrum by a small amount
~ Largest Footprint
- Damage Type is slightly weaker against light armour and infantry
Tesla Coil:
+ Damage Type is universally consistent
+ Tesla Trooper/Stingray charge give one the power of two
+ Highest overall armour/health
- Slowest Recharge Time
- Most Expensive
Overall, I think their own quirks balance them out. Sure Wave-Force is best against en-masse, but Tesla Coils and Spectrum Towers have their own workarounds such as a tower-to-tower empowerment and universal damage type that makes them all good in the end.
Also tesla coils are tier 2 towers which only require mega power plant unlike others

dunno why as for defense building, RA2 still lot way much better. the way tower atk is lot more smarter. They can divide atk to the enemy efficiently, for example, there is two tower in range, then enemy unit also in range, let say this unit need 5 shot to be able killed by tower. the combo of shot should be 2+2+1 right? In RA2 in the last shot, Tower A will target the first unit but Tower B will target other enemy unit if any, so remaining shot is not wasted, but in RA3, tower will target unit until it dies, doesnt care if that shot is wasted or not. Its quite annoying against masses. where there is many target at once. The tower will target only one unit that first appear in line of sight even though their shot wasted and there is other unit at the same time in range. In RA2, tower is smarter, they literall like saying, Tower A: ok I will take left, you take the right. Tower B: understood. Tower C: Okey I ll take the middle then.
There is also matter of cancel charge if target died too, the charged cancelled before shot even though there is other unit in range.
In my opinion unlike RA2, spamming unit for defense is more efficient than spamming tower as they also need power as well.
In RA2 tower especially prisma are very though defense as it own if you can deploy it strategically. So in conclusion, building tower more than its need as guardian and scout is not really efficient in RA3, I usually only place one or two at front line, and no more, the rest of defender I usually put up with unit.
Additional opinion: I also prefer RA2 charging animation more for both Prisma and Tesla tower than in RA3, dunno why, its more satisfying.

For effectiveness part, mostly yes, cuz in ra3, in most time tower shot/targeting same unit more often than spreadshot rendering shot or charge wasted. The most easily visible is with wave tower since this tower reset is the most visible than other. Also tower in RA3 for somereason is even more easily overwhelmed by unit. If you compare it, in RA2 base with many tower usually more safe than not, they are more smarter afterall, but in RA3 many tower doesnt guaranted safe base as there is many way to destroy it.
From time build, usability, and power consumption, towering base too much doesnt really worth it.
Time build: (other than soviet with help of crane) tower can only be built one a time each, while produce unit can be queued, so you can save time and focus to do anything else.
Usability: there is charge cancel and tower is often target same unit than spread.
Power: doesnt it weird that tower eat same power as superwpn?
@Artuurs Z. also the zapped effect part in ra2 is nowhere to be found, I quite like that effect :(
When infantry unit hit by either prisma or tesla, in RA2 unit is like getting electrocuted which is quite satisfying.

To be fair, RA2 is the game where Tank spam is at its peak. Those towers rarely see uses in multiplayer game because the players who spam tanks simply go after miners which almost always outside tower range while the player who build towers can do nothing because his tank fleet is smaller due to investment in the aforementioned towers and thus cannot protect his miners.
And if player want to attack, they'll just spam dogs to go along with their Grizzly and Rhino. Unless the tower players has Pro Starcraft players level of micro which is very unlikely because RA2 is more macro focused than clickspam that is Blizzard games, the attacking tanks will suffer minimal loss as the poor dogs get zapped in their place, because despite its smarter targeting AI than RA3, they still do not assign priority to different targets apart from avoiding overkill.
Westwood use physic and Science to make the game logic and Awesome so thats why their know the Technology can become dangerous and useful plus inside that defense has a pilot who control that tower. when there is a few unit their will share the power each other to make damage to 500+.
Unlike RA3. The team who make this game with no physic and logic

I'm pretty sure the prism towers need an enemy unit to be able to combine beams to deal more damage since I don't think its physically possible for them to use that feature against teammates
As observed how fast their attacks land, Spectrum towers shoot the fastest. Seconded by the Tower core which has average atk spd. Comes the Tesla coil in 3rd. However, the last mentioned outwins the two as the tower shoots lightning faster with each kill
Hey, I have a challenge, win with only the sudden transport, Shinobi and Engineer.
Tips: you can use the enemy production building to make their units.
Next Challenge: with only with a conscript.

In a hand of a very skilled player, tower core is probably the best turret. Tower core allows you to shoot without fully charging it, which means if you manually control it, this turret will become very efficient.
in theory yes, but in practise if you look at unit viability you see that a lot of micro intensive units are rather rarely used due to the fact that they need additional attention and you are already preoccupied.
In the end I would say WF tower is the worst advanced base defense, as it need more space and against any serious attack the higher firerate of the other advanced base defenses will outperform the precharge, not to mention the fact that you can power up coils with tesla troopers/stingrays and have the chain shot of the mirage towers which the WF tower has no such feature.
I feel like the gimmick of the spectrum tower is what makes it the worst one. You don't often want to build multiple advanced base defenses. The tesla coil will always be the best because it's a lot easier to get out.
That being said, actually having a grid of spectrum towers is one of the coolest things in the game when they are all working together.
Well I definitely know that riot sheild is very effective against a stand-alone prism towers.
The fact that Spectrum Towers can still fire themselves even after charging one another makes them S-Tier in my book. 4 at the entrance of your base, or α line of them overlooking α cliff can melt through tank divisions like you wouldn’t believe.
All you need to know about defensive towers in RA3 is that the USSR gets them on the second technological tier (after the nuclear power plant), and all the others on the third. Given that the rest of these towers are approximately equal, the USSR looks too strong.

Well, the empire can get the waveforce tower when a nanotech mainframe is built, which can be build right after the ore refinery is completed.

I kinda like the waveforce tower because of initial instant hit, but sucks otherwise. Probably is the worst advanced defense out of the 3, if only because it can't be deployed anywhere, but must be built via fragile nano cores

Tesla coil in RA3 required only a single Tesla troops to make it max power (double to damage), unlike RA2 20 Tesla troops can make Tesla coil hit as far as Grand canon. RA3 doesnt make Tesla coil gets more range.
Beside that, everytime Tesla coil kills a target, the troop stop charging the coil. Enemy tank buster AI always able to make hide inside the ground makes Tesla coil has to recharge power again, also make trooper stop charging the coil.
Tower core is quite op for its cost though, instant hit at fully charge on 1st hit. Coil & Spectrum have to charge up. Able to shot at mid charge is a good tool to fast kill low hp tank or infantry.
i don't ever remember building spectrum towers in my life, never notice how weak they are.

Due to the way they are built in game, spectrum towers are actually the most utilized ones despite their low damage output. They pop up almost instantly, so they never need to be set up preemptively, and can instead used in aggresive ways. Also, while their damage output is relatively lower, it's still high enough to fend off or scare away small or mid sized enemy forces.
Wave-force towers, on the other hand, are the least useful one of the three, despite their scary firepower. Being built by nanocores means they will die like a hundred times before they can even reach their destination, and the fact that they take 10 more seconds than other towers to set up doesn't help either. Also, why bother building immobile towers when you have the mighty wave-force artilleries which do the same thing but better? Together with rocket angels, wave-force towers are one of the least seen weapons in the whole game, second only to the mighty sputniks.
Spectrum tower can atack allies with its chain atack. You need to atack one tower with another, to manualy create a chain.
In RA3 you can select multiple structures, to give them orders, or am i forgeting something?
11:20 ok im also confused, i thought that 2 - 3 adjacent towers would power up the firing tower and have more damage but it seems like 4 towers with only one tower firing is just the same as 1 lone tower firing.
the passive stacking only works against enemy units, so the friendly fire test didn't work properly.
tower core has best damage and fire rate, not to mention it kills anything within that energy beam, so it's not single targeted all the time. but trying to maintain enough power for it is a hassle

Wave force turrets are bugged in one way or another....it is capable of attacking immediately upon something enters its range even when it is visually not "charged"....either it is a visual bug or it is supposed to charge than fire but it just cheats...

Charged tesla coil equals two uncharged ones. Also did I see that right? A single tesla trooper is capable of turning an under powered tesla coil into an overcharged one? In RA2 you needed 3 tesla troopers to achieve that....well..guess miracles of new technology....also it inherited Obelisk of light charge times at least compared to the other 2 turrets which start attacking almost immediately or in a second.
Very minimal power difference if a stingray is charging the tower. Tesla trooper is overall better for it. Smaller target.
Actually in ra2 you needed 2 tesla troops to power it but i think even one added a little bit of power to it, I'd have to test it

If your base is low on power you need 2 troopers to restore the tesla coil to its "regular powered" state. A 3rd one is required to overcharge a tesla coil even at low base power.
In RA3 it seems 1 tesla trooper can do both cases at once.
Wave Force Towers fire a precharged shot (without the visual animation) the first time an enemy appears. The subsequent times it actually charges visually now. Once all enemies within range are defeated, it precharges again (without the visual animation)

Wow I am amazed by how ineffective the Spectrum Tower is versus that shield. I also didn't realize that the Tesla Coil is sturdier than the other two (or seems to be at least). Interesting stuff!

Else more there: "royal Mach" - SK princess (aeon Illuminate) or queen 👑💎 Drakensang fr soviet radar ra2 law dog and green emperor phasers etc.
Tesla - good vs all, can be charged with tesla to double a damage, highest HP and cost.
Prism - better vs light armor, can stack with nearby towers, lowest damage and cost.
Tower - much better vs heavy armor (buildings, heavy tanks have it), worst vs couple of weak units, because low fire rate, highest damage, 2x2 size instead 1x1.
Tesla win in my opinion because universality. Prism good only when many of em in one place. Tower good vs high tier units.

Haven't played a lot of RA3, but I didn't notice they removed the prism tower chaining ... but they kept the Tesla tower trooper charging ... why is that?

They didn't remove chaining. Spectrum towers chaining simply didn't work versus allied units. That should be tested against enemy units.
