  • In video 1554 I review the new Lishi lock pick designed to fit into the AM3, AM5 and AM7 keyways, commonly found on American padlocks and others. In the video I describe the pick, demonstrate how it works, and show how to decode a lock after picking it.

    That was really interesting from a beginner’s point of view. Having the cut markings at the back there & being able to operate it with your finger tip gives a really cool perspective of how you’re moving your pick & what’s going on inside the lock while you’re picking, which isn’t so easy to see with standard pin tumbler picks. Thanks Bill!

    There are: 8^(6)=262144 combinations if this tool is right. With an electronic system the picking could be done much easily. To open the lock it could take 262144 × 0.01s = 2621.44 s = 43 min. Not very fast. I think the age of mechanical lock has ended.

    • @mrfrenzy.
      @mrfrenzy. 5 лет назад +1

      There are much less combinations than that because of MACS. Two adjacent cuts cannot differ more than a certain amount or the key would look like a square wave. For example a 7 pin 7 depths lock has only 100 000 combinations. A good quality car lock has 10 000 combinations.

    Its only cost effective to pick and fit keys to AMERICAN padlocks if there are many padlocks keyed alike. If you are only trying to gain entry on one AMERICAN padlock why waste time trying to decode? Just destroy and replace. This is from a money making point of view, not a sport pickers perspective.

    • @kkistler1
      @kkistler1 5 лет назад

      Not so. Locksmiths can get a working key by using a lishi very quickly. Imagine getting a call from somebody locked out of their house - lost keys. Both the deadbolt and the key in knob are locked. Pick the deadbolt with the lishi, write down the cuts, go to your service vehicle and cut a key to get through the second lock more quickly than picking it. And now you have a working key to get through all of the locks, assuming that all locks were keyed alike. This is quicker than taking apart a lock and measuring the pins with a micrometer. The new residential lishi tools have saved me a lot of time.

      Kerry Kistler True.However I don’t think that the convenience would justify the cost.(At lease for me that is) P.S. Generally speaking, I can pick a lock faster than I can code cut or even duplicate a key

    • @kkistler1
      @kkistler1 5 лет назад

      @@lokpikr999 I think you missed my point. When all keys are lost, the lishi will decode the pins much more quickly and get you to a finished replacement key faster. Just picking a lock open does not give you the cuts for a replacement key. Really she is not really for locksport. It is a pro tool used by professional locksmiths. One service call and it has paid for itself.

    I don't pick a LOT of American padlocks (maybe one or two a year) but I just ordered this pick, based just on how easy the SC1 is to use. I picked up the SC1 Lishi a couple of months ago, I didn't think I'd use it except for the the F series levers with the top T pins (PITA)... The more I played with it though the more I love that tool... ESPECIALLY for the decoding without taking the lock apart.
    NOW if Lishi would only make an S22/LA (which should be easy enough from how it works) and picks for the Y1 and Y2 keyways (which might be too paracentric for the design, but a locksmith can hope, right?)

      With the ease of action, I'm thinking something like this could well be used as the basis for a completely automated robo-picker. Just slide it in and turn on, and the robo-picker does all the work of tensioning and picking, with highly sensitive sensors detecting the feedback and making very precise movements. I suspect this is doable with current tech, but It would probably be too expensive currently, but within a few years the tech might become affordable enough to be practical.

      Lishi will only ever be for the wide open keyways. Try drawing up a tool like this for a paracentric or wavey keyway and you will realize it cannot work.

    i always watch your videos. i like it very much. but there is something bothering me. when you open some lock from China that is easy you kind of speak with some hate towards the coutry China saying like -these Chinese... but when is a product that you like, like this one you just name the brand of the product. i know it is something that happens automatically without you even know that you do it. but still...

    Did you have to sand and thin out the am5 for the 700 series American? Mine wouldn’t fit unless I did

      From 3:05, Bill discusses the need for the tab to be properly seated (allowing tension to be applied properly). With the shorter locks, this wouldn't be possible.
