Good lord I just learned a lot. I finally got my self a nice 1911 an S.A. LW Operator and now I want more. Think I’ve had about all the Glocks now and nothing feels as good in my hands than a 1911. I’ll be watching this video over and over! Thanks man!
Barrel fit is the most important thing for accuracy. In addition to the barrel bushing... The feet of the barrel bottom lug should be perched on top of the slide stop pin when in battery. With gun assembled and in battery, press down firmly on the barrel hood with your thumb if the barrel moves down at all whilst remaining in battery, the feet are cut too deeply and the barrel is literally floating above the slide stop pin. I learned this the hard way. I have a S&W 1911 with this condition... and the result is inconsistent 2-3" groups at 15y bench rested. Some people try to bandaid this problem by dropping in a longer barrel link so that the barrel perches on the link. This may help some but is a crappy bandaid... the real solution is barrel replacement... bad right... but soo easy to check... if you know.
Ahhh bless you Trevor. Looks like I have some testing to do! :D I liked the mental picture that your instructions gave. This will help massively later.
Barrel link size is important as well. The cross pin on the slide release should ideally ride the lower barrel lug when the slide is in battery. The pin should not ride the link.
When you have a barrel bushing tight enough to need a wrench you should be cycling it back off the end of the barrel a little bit before you turn it off. It's been fitted. And you should take it out of its fit position at the end of the barrel before you turn it. You're forgetting and even more important fit, the link that locks the barrel up into the slide has got to be long enough to almost not allow the slide to close all the way if you ride it down. I currently own a firearm that a friend of mine, a master gunsmith, built originally in 1979. This Government model has scored 597 out of a possible 600 points at the camp Perry matches on 3 different occasions. It is the most accurate Government Model on the planet by that standard. It is exceptionally tight and it never fails to cycle. And I've had people who claim to know the 1911 complained that the slide to frame fit was a bit loose. as long as that barrel and slider sitting in the same place every time the firearm Cycles, it's as accurate as it can get. I've been looking for 38 Super to be a carry gun. I like the cartridge, as it is easily capable of duplicating 357 Magnum velocities with 125 grain hollow point.
Maybe my town is different but around here there are no less than $400 1911 pistols. Why buy used when you can buy a new RIA with warranty for less than $500?
Definitely informative I have been glued to the idea of getting a rock island 1911 45 acp commander for my carry an conceal. Would that be sufficient for a ccw? Definitely would get a lot of shooting time with me only living 4 blocks from my neighborhood shooting range.
Absolutely Andre, I think that the midsize "commander" length is a great CCW option because you get the comfort of the full size frame and the slightly shorter barrel than the full size "government" length. You also get the slightly longer sight plane than the compact which is excellent for accuracy and will be suitable to carry and plenty of range time. Also the recoil springs in the midsize far outlive the compact as well as a slightly reduced recoil. Their is nothing wrong with a compact, I carry one but If I could only pick ONE, it would be the midsize as a great compromise between size, capacity and shootability. Have a good day an I hope you're happy with a commander, I highly recommend them!
I have a question about my Remington "R1 Enhanced" 1911. It has a bit of a hang-up right before it goes into battery but only when I rack the slide slowly. Racking it at normal speed seems to have no issues and it shoots fine as well. I think it may be the barrel grooves rubbing the slide? Is this anything you have seen before?
I sat through 11 minutes, just to get a couple tips near the end, all of which could've been covered in 2 minutes. WAY too much gabbing, for too little info.
mark rodgers I’m sorry you didn’t get the value you expected, I am just a regular guy so I haven’t shot too many videos that I actually share. Again, I apologize
I got a question i have a colt series 70 gold cup national match trigger is sooo light when you rack a round 1x out of 10x aprox gun goes bang it also went full auto on me so i sent into colt 8months later they put new sear pin updated trigger and new barrel $500+ later its still fires by its self just from racking a round how do you adjust the trigger pull weight i was told they have adjustable triggers all ive noticed is the over travel screw that is external colt also lost 3 mags and case i sent in with the gun and now wont respond to my calls or emails.. colt has by far worst customer care I've ever experienced. Im sooo pissed if my now-dead grandfather didn't give me that as part of inheritance I would sell or throw the fucking thing away just because of the brand Colt
That can easily be fixed by you if you are inclined to removing the necessary items to access the 3 finger leaf spring. The left spring you want to bend forward a little more than it already is, towards the muzzle. It is the only leaf that returns the trigger to original firing position. And bend the center leaf forward a little as well. The center leaf pushes on the disconnector and sear, putting them back into firing position after the slide has cycled to the rear. When I have had these two leafs bent that didn't put enough pressure on the trigger and disconnector I have encountered the same unsafe operation of the firearm.
Hey man, cool video, very informative. What are your thoughts on a full length guide rod vs a GI style? Furthermore what do you think about internal vs external extractors?
Hey Mike, those are really good questions, in face I'm gonna shoot a video on that this week because I think it is something certainly many people wonder about, good call... My personal preference is probably the full length guiderod and the internal standard extractor but their are definite advantages to the complete opposite too and I'll get something out by the end of the week on this content, nice!
keystoneweapon Sorry buddy, I didn't notice you had responded. I prefer the GI style guide rod mostly for cosmetic purposes. I've never found that either effects the performance of the gun, except those silly two piece guide rods (on springfields I think?) a gun should never involve a take down like that.
Author, gunsmith & retired US Army SF guy Larry Vickers says external type 1911s are not ideal. I'm a US Army veteran, 4yr 🎗 & ccw user. I prefer carrying guns that do not 🚫 require any special tools to break down or field strip. Some modern era 1911s(since 2000) are far more complicated than needed.
great video, found a Taurus pt1911 .45 on armslist the gun is 4yrs old. You did state that The Taurus was the example of everything bad. Any suggestion?
How about grip safety rattle and trigger rattle? I just bought a new Colt M45A1. Everything feels nice and tight but that grip safety especially rattles if your hand is not on it. Colt told me its "normal" they told me the grip safety and trigger are not fitted parts so that's why it's like that. Local gun dealer told me its a battle pistol so they designed it to be somewhat loose. Not sure what's normal lol.
Just bend the right leaf of the flat leaf spring towards the back of the gun a little more than it already is. The pressure is too light and that is why it rattles. And the trigger IS a fitted part. Think not? Buy an after market trigger and you will discover that some, if not all, are built oversize requiring custom fitting (not hard) of the shoe to the frame opening. The trigger bow channels machined into the frame are pretty accurate and do not require fitting to the trigger bow.
Very good Video on the 1911. Are you saying the "Rock Island 1911s" are good? Aren't they a cheap import from the Phillipines? Do the Phillipinos know what they are doing/machining?
They use Colt Machining in the Philippines. I believe The Armscor started in 1905 used to be Squires Bingham & Co. Which headquartered in the Philippines. Their business were clothing, firearms and ammunition trading and many more. Don Celzo Tuazon bought the Company at the beginning of WW II but was closed down by the Japanese because it build firearms.
Requires replacing the bushing. If I remember right, you'll have to source a bushing that matches both your barrel and your slide (bushing inner and outer diameter).
The thing I see consistently with these types of video, is the ramble ramble before you actually get to the point. This is no exception, almost 4 minutes into an 11 minute video. Once you start talking about the points, the info is good.
MrVulcan1963 I’m sorry sir, I haven’t updated my videos In many months due to time constraints and also lots of disagreement and some negative comments. ( I am not referring to yours). Hey bud I'm new in the 1911 world, I just got one and noticed at the rear. the slide to the frame are not flush together and the barrel leans down to the point when I put in the bushing I have to force it a little to slide it into place. Once assembly the barrel is tight in place is this normal or do I have a expensive fix waiting to happen

holy hell , great video keep it up. would like to know about why some mags don't work. assuming they are nose diving but not sure what causes it. i have a 10mm but the flat follower seems to not work or maybe it was a bad mag. Whats your opinion on tripp? looking for ones with bumper for a magwell. Still can't decide if i should get a one that hangs off the grip screw bolt holes or the one piece in a mainspring housing.
Thanks for the detailed info video I've been wanting the 38 Super cartridge, who made the Super in the video? Or can you recommend an all steel pistol?
You're welcome, glad my insight can be of some help. I do like the R1 Enhanced, at least the ones I've used; the ones I worked on/shot all had good fit and really good finishes, they are a "series 80" which adds a few parts but most are these days. The Ones I've fired were all dead on and the machining quality was very good. I would definitely go with the higher end ones like the Enhanced so you get the divetail sights and stuff though in case you want to change them down the road ! -Bill
My friend purchased a NIB new in box 1911a1 .45acp Tisas Army(GI) pistol in .45acp during the big 2020 "gun panic" 😳. I advised him to get a CDR 4" single action 1911a1 Tisas with a stainless barrel at a local shop. $399 range 🛒. The Army .45 was total 💩. It broke apart a few times & he could not field strip it without problems. I would NOT suggest 🚫 a SAO Tisas model 1911 unless you were 💯 sure the model could feed-cycle ammunition safely, hold up to regular carry. There are other, better brands for 1911s in 2021.
With enough care most of them do ok. Tisas and RIA have been hit and miss sometimes in terms of quality, but when they make a good pistol it's fantastic for the price point.
Been watching your vids for a while my friend wanted to enter a shooting competition and he wants to get an m1911 what eould you recommend for medium range shooting?
Got a good story for you. This guy with more money than sense bought a gorgeous polished blued Les Baer. Bo-Mar rear sights, gold bead front; it was a masterpiece. He picks up these USGI 7 round magazines from CDNN at about 7 dollars apiece, so he gets 3. His Les Baer came with a Mag Well Funnel on the bottom, but the guy doesn’t get base pads for his 7 dollar magazines. He can’t seat them right, complains he has to use his thumb to push the magazines in. Meanwhile the magazines it came with are just fine and doing fine. So he takes it to the range with a box of that Federal Aluminum cased ammunition. No oil. Gun jams up constantly. Complains. Takes it to the local cheapo gunsmith rather than the shop he got it from and the guy .... sigh.... Dremeled his feed, throat, barrel chamber. It’s all scarred up now, wont even feed round nose ball. Declares all Les Baer pistols shit, and even trades it for a used polished Taurus PT92, but now he is happy. This is a true story, no embellishments.
Many people, though not all, try to fix the problem without really investigating and from their investigation, learn what causes the malfunction of the firearm. A Dremel rotary tool is not a fix all. I rarely ever encounter a firearm that justifies their use. RUclips can be a blessing or a curse, depending upon your take away from the 'advise' given and explanations provided. My counsel is to proceed with caution, ask questions from many sources, study the problem, do the investigative work. Be patient, don't get in a hurry, and above all, stay away from the sandpaper and Dremel tools. Every firearm at some time left the factory working as it was designed. The best starting place, perhaps, is to get a real and thorough understanding of how the firearm was designed to operate and what ammo and magazines were meant to be used.
First place to start is what are the differences between the magazines that makes one brand work and the other not. I am not familiar with the mag well funnel bottom on the 1911 but it seems from the story that the problem is with the magazines, not the firearm.
Thank you for those tidbits of information. I'm planning on buying my first 1911 within a month and I'm planning on buy used. This is all very useful.

I'm left handed & other than Cabot Guns you really dont have a lot of choices. I'm also not big on grip safety features.
Colt 1911 magazines with anti tilt follower are made by Checkmate.

And BTW.. Les Baer's magazines are TOTAL SHIT
