Hi Anna! I've done some research about why people cross their arms across their chests and link hands with people closeby them while singing 'Auld Lang Syne'.
It's said that your arms on your chest/heart represent 'love'. The person that links hands with you on your left symbolises an old friend whereas the person on the right stands for the new one, or the other way round. So it reminds you that you shouldn't forget the old friends and you should welcome the new ones!

In China, we have Spring Festival to celebrate and welcome the coming new year. There are a lot of customs in Spring Festival and they vary regionally. On the day preceding the New Year's day, every family will thoroughly clean their house to sweep ill-fortune and decorate windows and doors with red paper-cuts to welcome good fortune and happiness. After all these things done, families will gather for the New Year's Eve dinner to celebrate family reunion and give kids lucky money in red envelopes.

In Mexico we eat 12 grapes before midnight. Each grape represents a new year resolution (: and we hug each other

Hello, Anna, greetings from Montevideo, Uruguay. As you know, in my country, the New Year's Eve is in summer... and we have almost 35° Celsius degrees that night. Now, I'll try to tell you about our traditions:
The first, the "asado a la parrilla" (it means meat cooked on a barbacue). Is the traditional meal in our country, and the meat is served with salad (tomatoe, lettuce and onion). The drinks are usually red wine, and for those like me who do not drink alcohol, lemonade or a soda.
There are no gifts in New Year's Eve, because we give our gifts in Christmast Eve.
On midnight, every family light the fireworks. There's no official spectacle of fireworks.
Is a night for celebration with family and friends. After the toast of New Year, young people go to dance or play guitar on the beach untill dawn. Older peoplw turn on the air conditioner and go to bed.
Have a happy New Year, and thank you for all your wonderful lessons during 2017.

Most of these UK traditions I have never even heard of, and I live here. The gift thing you talk about I have never heard of and my family has never done that and the thing with someone walking out of the door and entering at midnight I have never ever heard of and I know noone that does that either.

It’s basically the same in the Netherlands, but we don’t sing songs and at 12 ‘o clock when the new year starts the entire city/town lights up their fireworks at once and it is beautiful to watch.

That is so intersting. I´m writing a story set in scotland, so I watched your video to not write complete nonsense and I just loved it. Thank you very much!
    Freatings from Germany
PS: We`re also having parties, often with friends or family or a mixture of both and we also have fireworks, but we can do them on the streets at home. We don´t have the tradition of singing or bringing gifts, but we watch a british shortmovie called "dinner for one" and that is not just a family thing we really all do this. On the next day w often visit other family members and bring little gifts, like pig-shaped sweets or clover plants, to wish good luck.

The most popular New Year's Eve tradition here, in Spain, is eating twelve grapes at midnight, one on each chime. Really it's necessary to do it very fast. It's so difficult! I wish you a Happy New Year!

Miguel Concurso 2017 That's true! But you have to be very careful not to choke on them! I see myself over the years struggling to survive because, I don't know why, but people laugh out loud while eating the grapes!

In Indonesia (in the cities especially) we usually celebrate the New Year's Eve by barbequeing (fish/crabs/beef/sweet corn/sausages) and have a game night or 'people watching' in the city square then light up our own fire works then most of the people go to sleep at around 2 am (so we don't stay up all night)

Happy New Year, Anna. Hopefully you'll make more live lessons in 2018. There is a lot to cover. An A-Z of Verbs is a good idea. You could cover; action verbs, auxiliary verbs, compound verbs, gerunds, imperative verbs, infinitive verbs, intransitive verbs, irregular verbs, modal verbs, passive verbs, progressive verbs, to be verbs and transitive verbs. Why am I going on about English on New Year's Eve? LOL .

With the exceptions of First Foot, New Year’s Eve celebrations are relatively the same in the States. Up in New York City, they have a gigantic ball of some sort that they drop once it strikes midnight in their time zone (Eastern Standard Time). If one can’t make it up there to see it firsthand, the event is televised nationwide.

in some Tv shows (e. g. the Canadian show "Being Erica" ) I see people kissing each other on their lips at the midnight of the 1st of January who are actually not in a romantic relationship with each other. Does this happen in Great Britain too? What about mistletoes? Do you really kiss anyone who you happen to meet under a mistletoe - even your sister's husband?

    • @mandalorian_guy
      @mandalorian_guy 6 лет назад

Mistletoe kissing is an older tradition and pretty rare now. Midnight kisses are common but mostly between spouses and people on dates, It's not good to kiss strangers and people you barely know.

    • @tannewton

Mandalorian Gaming I think in one episode, Erica kissed a male friend at midnight before the year 2000. At that time, she and that guy were not a couple.
