  • The United Kingdom, Great Britain, England, or the British Isles: Which one should you use, and what’s the difference between them? And how do Ireland, Scotland, and Wales relate to all of this? It really is confusing, but in this video I will explain exactly what each name refers to, and what belongs where, so you’ll have no more confusion! We’ll also talk about the relationship of Northern Ireland to the UK, as well as the Crown dependencies - the Isle of Man, Jersey, and Guernsey. I’ll also touch upon identity issues such as the proportion of people who feel ‘British’ as opposed to just ‘English’, ‘Welsh’, ‘Scottish’, or ‘Irish’. This one is a really huge lesson, full of facts and interesting trivia about the differences between the countries that make up the United Kingdom. If you learn everything in this lesson and take the quiz at www.engvid.com/uk-gb-british-... you will truly be an expert on the geography and people of the UK!
NEXT, watch some of my other videos about life and customs in England and the UK:

    TRANSCRIPT
Hi, everyone. In this lesson we're going to look at the geography of the United Kingdom and we're also going to look at some culture related to all the different terms we use to describe Great Britain, England... All these different words, when do we use them? So we're going to break it down and look at that.
Let's start with the name. The official name is United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but often we just say "UK" because it's such a long country name, so we just say UK. I drew a map. My map is not to scale. And I tried my best, but it was hard to do it with the pens on the board, so we're going to show you a correct map. We've got England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. And the dotted line shows where Northern Ireland ends. This part is part of the United Kingdom; this part is not. More on that later.
So, the UK is a sovereign state or we could say a sovereign country. This means that they make all their own laws, and they govern themselves. So, the UK is a sovereign state or a sovereign country. But the reason that's confusing is that we... When we're talking or when we're describing a place in the world, we talk about Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland as being countries. So, you think: "Is...? If the UK is a country, are Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland also a country?" Well, they are, but they don't make their own laws. So, we have a word for it and we can call them "constituent countries". We can say England is a constituent country of the United Kingdom. We can say Scotland is a constituent country of the United Kingdom, etc. Okay.
Now it gets more confusing because when we're talking about the UK, we can say it's made up of those countries - Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. We can also say it's made up of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is this land mass, this island shape, here; and Northern Ireland is part of the land mass, the island of Ireland. So, if we put this bit and this bit together, we get the United Kingdom.
Great Britain has three constituent countries. Remember, this is Great Britain, Scotland, England, and Wales make up Great Britain. Britain... Now we're getting smaller. This is Britain, England, and Wales. So, I can say: "I'm from Britain", because I'm from... I was born about here in London, so I can say: "I'm from Britain".
Now, we have another term called "The British Isles". The British Isles is a geographic term, so we use it to describe a place on the map. And the British Isles would include everything we see here. Actually, perhaps except these islands. These islands are called Jersey and Guernsey, and they're closer to France. But the British Isles could describe everything here in a geographic sense. And I wasn't able to draw all the islands, but there's actually over 6,000 islands up in Scotland, some down here as well. So, many, many islands.
But the trouble with that term, to say the British Isles is that some people in Ireland don't like that term to describe... To include them because it makes it sound like Ireland, it's British, even though Ireland is independent. Ireland is a sovereign country by itself. So some people object to calling this the British Isles.
If you do object to calling it the British Isles, you can say the North Atlantic-I can never say this word-Archipelago. Archipelago. And this means, like, collection of islands. And the place in the world is in the North Atlantic. Right. […]

Can we just take a moment to appreciate that this was all done in one take? Even for native inhabitants, this is a seriously confusing subject. For example, I never knew Britain and Great Britain weren't synonyms.

It is worth reading up on the status of Scotland and Northern Ireland bank notes.
Apparently they are not even legal tender in Scotland and Nothern Ireland.
Scottish shops could refuse to accept Scottish notes (and any other bank notes as no bank notes are legal tender there).
      Very confusing.

If I’m right there are even about four different bank notes series in Scotland. As. far as I know this derives from 16th or 17 century when banks in general (beginning in Italy) issued their own money (before national central banks) as an >I Owe You< for deposited equivalent gold and silver (coins).

Really good try! Scots law is different and always has been. Also the people of Scotland are sovereign - not the monarch. Always have been. Scots language is not a dialect - it is as old as old English and both developed at the same time. Scotland also has Gaelic which is far older than Scots or English and has roots in indo european protolanguage. Other that all that - you did really well explaining it all!

You don't even know what the term sovereign means 😂
In relation to a country it means you are not subject to any other power and also have the authority to enter into agreements with other sovereign nations. Scotland has neither of these because its under the power of the UK government, and they cannot enter agreements with any other country.
Literally could not be simpler to understand, yet somehow you still fail massively in doing so.

I've had to reengage on this thread recently because someone replied to my comments. I noticed yours and I would just tell you that a lot of Irish people object strongly to British representations of our country. I would just say I think the young lady in this video is very good and very nice and obviously a great teacher. However, she inevitably only speaks to a British perspective which is not an agreeable one to Ireland. These are no small matters for Irish people and many of us feel the need to push back at the tide of British narrative regarding our country. It's as comparable as receiving an account of US history and its terminology from a Mexican or Canadian source. It just will not concur with the US account, and the same applies to Ireland and Britain. Calling Ireland a British isle is not acceptable in Ireland and it was removed from all official documentation a long time ago. My comments are above if you have any further interest. Good luck to you in Richmond Virginia.

Hi Jade, I have a great doubt, I perfectly know that Simple Present Tense with singular third person, the letter "S" is added, but I really want to know why is this, what is the root of this, what is the reason if is there any, I want to know if that is because of "does" or if "does" has nothing to do with that "s" and simply the "s" is added and that is. I wonder this because when you use "does", the "s" in the main verb dissappears. I have researched on Internet but I have found nothing. Thanks so much

Small point about the national anthem thing: in Scotland we also use "Flower of Scotland", "Scots Wa' Hey" and another one I forget about.
"Scots Wa' Hey" used to be the one most commonly used until about midway through the last century, but by that point we'd already started using "Scotland the Brave" and became more popular somewhere along the way.
"Scotland the Brave" still gets played before international sporting events for Scottish national teams, but it's mostly used for rugby.
"Flower of Scotland" has been used by the Scottish football team since about the 80s or 90s and is gradually being seen as the national anthem. I think that's mostly down to football being more popular than rugby, so more people being exposed to it.

At 11:20 : THANK YOU, JADE. The naming of the Olympic team representing what I thought of as the United Kingdom was confusing to me. It seemed to be incorrect to name the team "Great Britain", since that is a geographic term, being the name of the largest island in the British isles archipelago. It seemed to be that it should be "team UK". However, it hadn't occurred to me what the situation was for athletes from Northern Ireland. Understanding a bit about the 20th century history of Ireland (the island), and how there came to be Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland, it seems appropriate that athletes from Northern Ireland have the option to choose their team. Team GB seems a correct name.

Unfortunately, you got the views of a person. ( perhaps unintentionally) who pedals history and geography from the viewpoint of the colonial country ( England in this case ) that controls the other countries .
Don’t believe everything you see on RUclips ,
Government types like to push their view on the unsuspecting viewer

If there were an Oscar for Best Teacher of the English Language... the award goes to you! There are loads of information to be learned in your videos. Though English is my mother's tongue I am constantly learning new stuff from your videos. Why do I still have problem pronouncing "three". You would laugh hearing how I say it. Please continue making these videos. Good luck from Guyana.

Great Britain = England + Wales + Scotland
UK = England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland
Ireland = Republic of Ireland + Northern Ireland
British Isles = England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland + Republic of Ireland
Btw ma’am, I don’t understand the one with “Britain = England + Wales” what is that supposed to mean? Scotland should be there.

It was from when the Romans were around. They stopped on what would become the border of England and Scotland over a thousand years later.
England and Wales were the area's that was controlled by the Romans for a couple of centuries. Ofcourse they were called that then. It was known as Britannia
Both of those areas were under the controll of the Romano Britons after the Romans left, with their stronghold in South Wales, and Ynys Mon. The area in which England would arise out of Was named after the Anglo Saxon pagans. And Wales was named after the Christian Romaniced Britons (later known as the Welsh, it's called Cymru in their own language)
