    In real life explosives travel at different speeds, you are using tnt so it’s speed of detonation is 7 km/s or 154,340 mph. The speed of detonation dictates the ‘speed’ of the explosion and that means it would have to go at least that speed to get out unscathed. A explosions main destructive force is its shock wave which goes at the close to speed of sound, hence sonic booms, so it would have to be going at the over the speed of sound to remain unscathed if it wasn’t in contact with the explosive. In this case there is conservation of motion so he could have to accelerate to x+154,340 mph (if x is the initial velocity at which the explosion happened), he would need to accelerate to that higher speed more or less instantaneously. If we are going that far then it also matters what the center of ignition is: center, symmetric, or asymmetric. This seems to be an asymmetric explosive because when he got to high enough speed only the left tire was popped. But if we dig even further then you have to consider that the block underneath was not damaged which means it wasn’t the entire side as an ignition point, only the left side on the middle or top. I’m not going through all of those calculations or physics of why that matters but it does have to do with the speed of detonation that we talked about earlier.

      I think it's because trail makers keeps the dynamite in place once triggered but takes a little longer to explode. this means that the reason moving fast protects you is that you move further from the dynamite. when triggering in the front of the vehicle, the dynamite doesn't clear the vehicle but ruther explodes in the middle of the vehicle.

    • @steeljawX
      @steeljawX Месяц назад +1

      In theory, it makes sense. In Trailmakers logic, this is impossible. He's traveling at a certain speed and the explosion damage is happening behind him on the engines. Power core explosions are the same as dynamite explosions, so they'd be subject to the same time-space delay and effect things a bit behind them. If it were the engines exploding, then the engines immediately behind Scrapman would also explode, meaning his seat (also a power core part) would also be subject to explode.
      Like I'm not doubting your opinion at all. It's just by the very nature of this experiment, that shouldn't matter at all because all of that damage should be happening behind the point of detonation relative to the point of detonation. So if an engine explodes and is capable of taking out the engine immediately next to it while moving at that speed, then it voids the entire experiment because then there would be no speed in which damage could be "out ran." I don't have a satisfactory alternate explanation for it, just the counter point of whatever dynamite explosion damage is subject to, all other explosion damage is subject to.

    So, out of curiosity, I wanted to see if I could calculate the dynamite block's explosion speed
    I set up one block of dynamite at the end of a line of 20 accumulator blocks (vertically aligned) with each accumulator pointed at their own number display a safe distance away. An XOR gate toggle triggers all of the accumulators and the dynamite at the same time, meaning any accumulators that get destroyed will stop counting and yield a measurable result
    The dynamite block consistently destroys 11 of the accumulators, all of which stop at a value of 0.03 (accumulator settings: range 0 to 100, scale of 1.00). Note: there is no 'gradient' to the shockwave/explosion radius, the whole area is affected at the same time. Anyway, 4 single block spaces = 1 meter, meaning the explosion travels 2.75 meters in 0.03 seconds, which translates to about 91.67 m/s

      That wouldn't matter in this one case because the point of explosion ends up tracking ahead of the point of damage (theoretically). If this is the case, which Scrapman is testing, then the engines, which are power core blocks, would be subject to the same weird physics as dynamite, another power core block. But there's a weird damage pattern when he has it tacked on near the front of his vehicle. I think he should have tested with an explosive extended out in front of him as well. There's clearly a level of omni directional damage going on that is probably throwing all the variability in there.
      In otherwords, while the TNT is on top of his creation he's experiencing damage downward he never observed before with the TNT hanging off the back just a little bit off the ground and nothing under it. I can't say for sure, but I would say that would explain it a little more. If it was a case of other power cores exploding, then all of his engines and his seat would have exploded.

When you switched the last motor to the 1x1x2s you didn't put one above the tnt so you never had a block at the same position as the wheel. Also if you ever want to look at this again, to tnt with only one triggered by the speed sensor seems to be able to blow some motors up. Love your videos.

    If 2 Block ~ 1 m, the explosion reaches the ~ 7 m explosion radius in ~ 1/30 s, which i assume is the physics tickrate. So to survive a frontal hit the entire vehicle needs to clear the explosion radius in 1/30 s. For the car in the video, it would be >mach 2

    In reality, shockwaves still consists of particles. As such, conservation of momentum applies as usual - but only for the first particles. The particles that are hit by those first particles don't have any momentum, but are pushed on by particles that have both the momentum from the vehicle AND the explosion, hence they would act as a bigger explosion towards the front and a smaller explosion towards the back.

  • @nyscersul42
    @nyscersul42 Месяц назад

    Gonna first point out the idea you used for testing was great, but, i feel a couple of extra thoughts would have made it better. Firstly, to pin down the explosive radius of the dynamite relative to the vehicle without movement. The other idea was to try and place the dynamite at the front, since the vehicle design was only capable of reacting with the radius of the explosion, but, you could have had a lot more testing and fun if you were able to test against the diameter and also use the entire length of the vehicle, to try and push it farther. To escape the explosion when you have it at the front requires a lot more movement. It appears that the explosion can only be escaped because the activation of it is done a frame after the trigger, suggesting that the trigger of the dynamite drops an explosion object into the game world, which then requires a frame to be initiated using the usual game update loops. As you mentioned the conservation of momentum - you are 100% correct. If the momentum were conserved, you would never outrun the explosion unless you could accelerate to the escape speed in one single frame.

    • @nyscersul42
      @nyscersul42 Месяц назад

      Another thought is about how the escape works. To clear the explosion the rear of the vehicle needs to move more than the explosive radius in one frame, you could experiment with differently shaped vehicles, what about a vehicle with a circular hollow/cutout at the rear?

    • @nyscersul42
      @nyscersul42 Месяц назад

      It could also be possible they attempted to replicate the real behaviour of explosions, which expand from a centre point over a very short period of time, so, the explosion is only tiny on the first frame it triggers.

    Dynamite explosions DEFINETLY vary with your ange and only with that.
    Every single time you changed the angle you drove at is when the damage you took changed, otherwise it stayed the exact same down to how damaged blocks got.
    At around 15:40 it was also the angle, which changed based on when you started accelerating after respawning (as you can see from the skidmarks).
    My guess for why this happens is because dynamite doesn't spawn a sphere and maybe something more like hitscan as the explosion damage radius, or spawns a sphere at a speed with the equivalent of 600 kph travel speed.
    Don't ask why I attempt to decipher Trailmakers code from what the game does, (this is not my first time doing this) I don't know either.
    My guess to the wierd stuff at around 22:00 is that the explosion is dealing its damage from a stationary location and you are moving out from under it during that, making the explosion damage travel down your vehicle unless it snaps the vehicle in parts as that causes you to slow down a lot.

    Without considering what was shown, I would just guess the speed of sound or not possible.
    In reality, the speed of sound typically limits the explosion propagation. So if you are going faster than it it can't catch up.
    Technically though if you go fast enough you reduce the impact of the explosion to reduce the damage even below the speed of sound.
    What I think would be an interesting test is to try to map out the explosion in 3D (or at least 2D where one is the direction of travel) to see if it is a sphere at the point of the explosion but delayed, making it appear as a sphere on the moving creation which is displaced from the explosive; or if it actually propagates outwards creating a different shape in the moving creation.

    As I understand it, a shockwave is a wall of compressed medium (air in this case). If that is the case, then explosions of any size and power can only travel at the speed of sound max (specifically the shockwave). The ait can't vibrate other air fast enough to push the shockwave supersonic, that's like trying to race air against itself.
    As for the game, an explosive at the back of your vehicle will explode in a sphere (maybe??), only half of which will ever touch the vehicle. Maybe that somehow correlates to half the speed of sound you are reaching?

    22:55 Edit 1: wait I forgot that the dynamite will start immediately decelerating, so depending on the drag it may be way more than that xD
    Edit 2: just finished the video and it seems accurate. I think the reason the explosion damage seems delayed is simply because it takes a moment to reach a sufficient radius to damage the engines (this may depend on where exactly their hitboxes are). I thought it could be just that the explosion is slightly delayed, but I feel like this doesn't explain how the engine right under the dynamite's attachment point also gets damaged (unless the kinetic energy of the moving dynamite is sufficient, I suppose - but then I'd expect it to bounce way up which I don't think it's doing, though I'm not sure. If it does, it could be yet another explanation of what's going on).
    Also I suppose the speed at which you'd get full immunity would be the speed at which the explosive would travel from the point of attachment/triggering past the end of your vehicle within one tick. Which is variable and also probably a _really_ large number, considering the aforementioned drag.

    I wonder what would happen if the speed was locked at the speed of the explosion instead of still accelerating. Would be a fun idea to revisit this with the condition of the vehicle speed locks at the speed you explode the dynamite

    Idk if this is in the game but I think you should have used a speed limiter because even though there is a speed sensor you continue to gain speed and there could be a slight delay. You could also be gaining speed and speeding away from the explosion.

    The explosion damages your construction every time, because the exploding dynamite is part of the construction. So the screen shaking and cracking should be triggered every time.

    What if the explosion speed is based on the number of frames per second? Say an explosion happens at some given point in the 60 frames in a second, maybe moving at 10 times the speed would get you through enough frames and far enough away to avoid the explosion. So say you play at 30 fps maybe you only need to go 300 instead of 600. Just an idea and i dont have trailmakers to test it.

    Also try adding more smaller blocks/elements for more precision
    Maybe even try to create (predict) a function?

    The last experiment you're measuring the propagation speed. I wonder if the explosion propagation preserves any momentum from speeding vehicle but if so, you could just deduct the 600 base speed and based on your observation estimate the propagation to be around 1 block per 100km/s.

    Don't guns and stuff generally target the center of the creation? So if you dogfight with rockets (assuming they have the same damage calcs as dynamite) if you use a more compact creation that can go over 700 it can maybe avoid damage even if hit. Don't know how realistic that would be but it is interesting. Also now knowing about how dynamite explode could be interesting in fights like explosive catapults etc to get a better radius of damage

    If you have vsync your frame rate might be capped to 60fps
    60fps = 600km/h
    Would explain why it was inconsistent at 600km/h

    I have a feeling that to get full immunity for your vehicle, you'd have to go 1800km/h or 2100km/h or thereabouts. (Based on how far back the damage moved between going 1000km/h and 600km/h.)

    I tested it with this vehicle, and with the explosive at the front, you need to be going more than 1500 kph.
    At 1500 kph it destroys everything after the first white section.
    It's weird how at 1234 kph it destroys everything after the middle of the second black section, and at 1500 kph, the explosion is "faster".

    also the acceleration isn't stopping at the time it explodes, so your measurement of 601 isn't quite accurate, since as the explosion takes the time to appear, you are already faster than 601.

    Objects in motion stay in motion. You can't outspeed an explosion if the source is moving at the same speed as the that which is running. As the speed of the explosion itself is about 195x the speed of sound and no vehicle is capable of that speed, at least IRL lol. In the game, who knows.

    So we know that the explosion starts on that one side of the dynamite. But then why at like 800+ KPH does it also damage the other side?
    I think that at the moment the explosive is triggered it is then nailed in place at the exact spot it’s triggered at. Then that one side starts the explosion. That’s what he tested at 601. So then the explosion could move to the other side and that’s why at 800+ the damage switched sides? That’s just my guess anyhow.

  • @kjdh3823
    @kjdh3823 Месяц назад

    I guess you should‘ve set the vehicle on a speed limit, because by the time the dynamite explodes you‘ve already gained some more speed since you‘re constantly accelerating… so my guess is, that this is why your test is inconsistent.
