    You need to do all that with rocks inside to simulate ammo weight

  • @AtimatikArmy
    @AtimatikArmy 8 лет назад +30

    You should fill it with something equally heavy as it being packed full of shells... maybe like a bunch of old wheel weights from the local tire center... These things take on the order of many magnitude more abuse when they are loaded down... I would like to see if that steel wont split taking a drop off the back of a pickup hitting a bump at 25 mph... It would also be good to see the same identical test done with the original USMC ammo can of similar condition to see if there is a difference (the control). Maybe even weight the two cans to get a comparison of actual steel content. I would be surprised in the Chinese one weighed the same, and even if it did I'm sure the cheap steel used will not be at the same alloy and strength. Just some thoughts... maybe somebody can donate an actual USMC can for a more rigorous future test! That would be cool. Till then, it's nice to know the Chinese one should do in a pinch I guess.

    Perhaps try filling it with water and turning it upside down? You'll find out real fast if its waterproof or not.

    Can you do some drop tests with the can filled with sand or something? A steel box is too strong to be damaged under its own weight

    • @Saturn20
      @Saturn20 8 лет назад +2

      I was thinking the same thing. You need to drop test with it full of ammo or simulated ammo.

  • @RevGunn-jq3cq

    I line ammunition can with a ziplock freezer bag load it with ammo and a couple of desiccant packets, seal the bag and close the lid.

  • @tomn5880
    @tomn5880 5 лет назад +1

    The reason for steel material is to prevent loss of air tight seal around the lid. Plastic will flex, when picked up by the handle, causing a loss of the air tight compartment when weight, like ammo, is inside. When a plastic ammo can is submerged, the upward force of the air bubble can break the air tight seal allowing water to get inside the ammo box.

    I have 4 Blackhawk cans ( USA made ) that came with large orders of .22 cal ammo shipped in them. Buy online (no sales tax) at a good price and I often only pay a little bit extra for the shipping. Costco has a .30 cal box inside a .50 cal box for $21.44 with tax. Available now: 4875 rounds of Federal AutoMatch .22 LR 40 Gr LRN with 3 .50 CAL STEEL AMMO CANS delivered from Oklahoma to California for $285.74 @ 5.86 cents each. So the 3 ammo cans are almost free.

My ocd got the best of me and I sold them and replaced them with harbor freight cans. They were around $3 more but at least are the same size as my surplus cans

    They're $8 at Walmart now. I filled one of these with 1000 rounds of 45 ACP (roughly 53 lbs), filled all the way to the brim. I carried it for minutes at a time trying to see if it'll fail from the weight, but it held up just fine.

    • @nickflores9775

      Both 1000 round ammo of 45 acp in Magtech and Sellier & Bellot fit with the ammunition in its packaging box. All 1000 round of each of the ammo brand fit exactly in one of these, so you don't really have to take it out of the box and put it in the ammo can bare. there's plenty of room for desiccant packets to keep it dry too.

    I have several of these and they have taken some beatings just as well as my GI cans. I still prefer GI when i can get them for about the same price, maybe even $1 or $2 more but these are a solid option especially when GI cans aren't always available or inexpensive.

    Thank you for a very thorough review of this ammo can, I just bought one and you have convinced me that it was a great choice! I try when possible to buy USA when ever I can who doesn't? But let’s be real here for a moment, anyone who criticizes this purchase for this reason isn't being practical, walk through that person’s home and tell me you won’t find something that says made in china on it? We are all proud of where we live and buying an ammo can that doesn't break the bank and is very dependable doesn't change that!

  • @time2go265
    @time2go265 7 лет назад +1

    Try it with 30 pounds of sand. There's not a lot of water pressure at the surface. So when the can goes in water it sinks. Every foot is .445 psi. It doesn't sound like much but it forces air out and when you raise the can it may suck more water in since air compresses much easier than water. Idont think it's worth saving 10 bucks to protect a $400+ investment.

    An added measure of insurance to help keep it watertight, would be like we did in aviation, pull the rubber seal, apply a good amount of Vaseline all over the seal and put it back...it works!
    I would like to have seen an amount of weight in it, to make it sink in the pool, and leave it for twenty-four hours...or more.

    You should have done it like the guy that did the test with the Harbor Freight ammo can. He beat it up a lot more than you, & survived also even after being whacked with a bat & bent back into shape. I am almost certain that the same Chinese company that made the Harbor Freight ammo can is the exact same company that made that Walmart can. SGAmmo has them available with their logo on it, also from China. But I bet you its also made by the same Chinese company. They are marking them up pretty high though at $20 a pop or more. I might just have to get a few more from Walmart again.

    not critical for this video but for other waterproofing tests, I've discovered that tissues work better than paper as they absorb water much more quickly and easily, making it easier to tell if there's any leaks.

  • @turbod0077

    I have bought a few of these cans. The ones you find today are different from the old ones. Different brand. I have found that you really need to check the seal on the new ones, they don't always match up. I had to pass up about 8 to find 1 that the seal matched up. Not as good as the ones made in the USA, but good enough to keep your ammo safe and dry.

The paper was a good idea for your pool test to see if the stored product would be dry. Another stress test you could of tried is if the can could support your weight. all and all i did learn something thanks.

    A couple of cans of waterproof undercoating or " rhino liner" spray cover 10 of these cheap ass cans. Seal them up tight.
