Unbelievable Spring Break Speckled Trout Action
Today was one of the more exciting days I've had fishing in a while. Flounder were biting and the trout were plentiful. I was also able to land a huge gar caught on a DSL lure. Flounder were all undersize but plentiful. The trout bite was very aggressive after I changed up lures/colors.
Tips/Tactics:
Only went to 3 spots today. Hit one marsh system and the mosquitoes were eating me alive. Went west and hit the mouth of a bayou that I like to fish on Goat Island. out in Galveston East Bay. Since it was an outgoing tide, I fished the outside of the bayou and hooked onto (and lost) a couple of flounder. All were barely undersize at 14". The flounder were hitting the new Salt Strong Twitch bait. I then slowly moved into the bayou and hooked up with some nice trout. They tore up my twitch bait so I switched to another rod rigged with a 1/4 oz jighead and a DSL Burner Shad Chartreuse Flash. The trout bite was on FIRE after that. They were hitting the lure as soon as it hit the water. If they didn't, they keyed in on an aggressive twitch and a 3 second pause. It felt like I was surrounded by trout. I landed about 20 trout ranging from 5" to 17.5". I would of finished my limit, but then I hooked onto an alligator gar that took me 16 minutes to reel in. It was an epic fight, due to a lucky hookset into the outer edge of its mouth. That gar must of made 5 or 6 runs screaming drag. I'll post a video later. It was a fun catch on light gear!
