& then...it was...GAME OVER
Talk about cheating death,
I’m 53 and growing up in the 70’s as a kid ment there were pretty much 4 rules,
1- have breakfast & get out of the house
2- come back at lunch
3- come back home when street lights come on
4- don’t die
So in the summer my Aunt and Uncle had a house down the Cape and we would go down ever summer. Place was great growing up. So we walk to the beach and this beach had 2 docks on the water. 1 right at the score with a slide so the little one can go one that. About 20-30 yards out there is another dock with a diving board. But you could only go out there if you could swim. So as I got to be 7-8 I kept asking my Dad to go out to the diving board and if he could take me. Every year my Dad is like, “ ..ummm next year “. Next year comes he says the same thing until one year.
Now let me paint a little picture for you, the Jaws movie, the first one, people at the beach this was like that place. So we get there and my parents notice the life guard.
Back then the lifeguard was , “ hey does your kid want a job as lifeguard this year”
No training , if you can swim your hired.
We show up and walking by the lifeguard and we sit down and my parents say, “ hope no one needs help today, this kid looks 13 and couldn’t save anyone”
Thank God they were so wrong. After pestering my Dad to take me out , once again, he finally says yes. We had a pool at home so we knew how to swim and he was probably waiting for me to be a stronger swimmer. So I’m about 9-10 now maybe it’s 1980 or 79, but anyway, we start to swim out there, everything is going fine we are both swimming on our own. Then we notice the dock is to our right and is further away, so we change direction and we still are going further and further away. My Dad starts pushing me towards the dock and I come right back to him. He pushes me I come right back. Now I’m thinking “ umm Dad what’s going on? “ I couldn’t imagine what was going through his mind. Then all of a sudden someone grabs me then my Dad and next thing we know we are on the dock. When my Dad and I walked out, my Mom being the SUPER MOM she has always been and is still kicking butt at 84, watched us and started walking towards the life guard. She said “excuse me but my son and husband “ that’s all she got out of her mouth and the young lifeguard says very politely, “ it’s ok Ma’am I’ve been watching the two of them since they walked out.” Then as soon as he saw a little trouble he was off in the water. My Mom said “ he swam so fast and was a Guardian Angel that day. He saved my life for sure and possibly 2 even 3 lives that day.
I wish we knew who that lifeguard was… probably the most horrifying things to ever happen to me. Thank God & his Guardian Angel !!

What is it with lifeguards being pissed off at the drowning kids? My near-drowning wave pool experience when I was about 13 was basically the same as your story except that I happened to be maybe 15 feet from a ladder when I went under after getting smacked in the face by like 10 waves. I was just strong enough to get myself to the side and pull myself above the water. I collapsed on the side of the pool, half in and half out, with what felt like a gallon of water spilling out of my lungs, and after a minute or so, the asshole lifeguard sauntered over and yelled at me to quit blocking the ladder. I just looked up at him and coughed out even more water. It was 35 years ago so my memory is hazy, but I vaguely remember gasping out, “do….. your….. damn…. job.” He walked away and left me there to die. I crawled away and recovered. Good times.
Exactly I don’t understand wave pool lifeguards being so mad about doing their jobs. It’s happened to me more than one location. It’s ridiculous.
I think the reason those lifeguards are always pissed off is because either they are paid enough or got pissed off by something and decided to be pissed off to others.
It could also be because the kids make the same mistake every time

I just remember the wave pool got really packed. Everyone else was on inflatables. I was swimming in the deep end, and I got temporarily trapped under water. It's hard because you can easily get sucked under, and they really pack those pools with hundreds of people.
