If he hates hands, use food treats to teach him to step on the handle of a wooden spoon. That's how I started with Clover. The treat is in a small spoon. The parrot steps on the wooden spoon handle, and then you give a treat from the other spoon. This way, the parrot can't bite you. When they learn that stepping on the spoon is fun, you can gradually use a shorter handle, until they are stepping on your hand. About words, I just talked to Clover like a person. Some words she pronounces well, others are not perfect.

When I lived in Belize, we had a yellow headed parrot, named Maggie. A tourist had bought her and found out she couldn't take her back, so we ended up with her. Her first words were "Paula, HELP!" It took me a while to figure out who was saying it.LOL She was also our watch dog, we had her cage outside, so when people approached she would say "Hello" or "Good Morning". Everything this lady said is true!! The attention, the toys, the poop, the food, and destroying your furniture is like living with a 2 year old for 35+ years. Maggie gave us lots of joy, especially when she sang songs, cause we sang a lot. However, we had to move back to the US and had to leave her behind with another couple.
Thanks for this great story. I did research in Costa Rica years ago, and knew a family with a yellow-head in the same situation. She hung out on a huge mango tree in the front yard by day, slept indoors, had baths and chatted with her people, who spent most of their time in the yard with her doing work and preparing food. Sorry you had to leave her behind, but glad you found a nice place for her. Parrots live a long time, even longer than horses. That's why both parrots and horses often have several owners during their lives... much more so than dogs or cats. I tried to raise Clover to be socialized and speak in a G-rated way just in case I ever left Turkey and would need to rehome her, and that turned out to be a good decision. With her tricks, talking and socialization, she was highly adoptable and landed a wonderful home.
This is crazy. Within the last minute this parrot mimicked: the wife offering breakfast someone gulping a drink the couple kissing, saying I love you, and goodbye the husband's voice the dog whining the smoke alarm needing a new battery the wife's angry voice
I"M SOOOO GLAD YOU SHARED THE INFO ABOUT RAISING A PARROT. Ohhh you saved so many people from years of financial issues and frustration with the level of care. I'd say 90% of people have NO clue what they're getting into when they buy a talking bird. Great share.
Giovanni Ambrosio Don't just go out and get one because it can't talk well. Many if these bird's are given up after two years (85% of them to be exact). They're a lot of work...
Giovanni Ambrosio Please dont buy for the sake of their talks they need really caring atmosphere some of them dont like humans they also have introvert and extrovert thing ask your pet seller about the bird you are buying .
Imagine a mother of a teenage daughter coming home, sifting through her mail and hearing her parrot say "I'm pregnant!" and "Don't tell mom" on repeat.
Some women consider it cheating on them, other women watch porn with and without their partners. It will always be a thing for some and not for others.
While we could probably never expect to have a properly flowing conversation with a bird, while watching this video I can see that they seem to have a strong sense of memory. I wonder about when it's saying all of those things, is it recalling the scenarios in which it heard those words or phrases? Is the bird being nostalgic? I don't know. Kinda cool though.
The coiled rope that birds climb on for fun. They usually have a tray underneath, and a perch and bowls at top. Great way for your parrot to spend time out of it's cage. Not recommended for cockatoos becasue those little stinkers climb down to the floor. Without fail. (OK, almost always without fail, haha)
Thank you for warning potential parrot owners about what it's like to own a large bird! I have a cockatoo and an eclectus, and I wish someone had warned me before I adopted them. Of course, I love them so much and wouldn't ever give them up now. So many people see my birds and think they are so "cool" because of the talking, tricks, etc., and I always make sure to tell them the negatives of owning a parrot as well as the positives. People that run out and get a parrot on a whim are the people who later give their birds up to a shelter after they learn what it takes to own one of these beautiful creatures.
Barbara Hardin I kinda think it's a bit abusive to own an animal meant to fly and keeping it in a cage all its life. I'd love to own a parrot but I wouldn't want to confine a bird.
@@randalljewell679 But there are animals that were hatched/born in confinement who aren't capable of living on their own in the wild. It's better that they live with caring owners than in abusive homes or in sanctuaries where they might not get enough attention.
@@randalljewell679 The birds she would own would be birds that would already be owned by someone else. So better to have a good owner. She didn't go out and steal it from the wild. Not that I don't understand where you're coming from.
Parrots don't have an off button and unlike other birds, if you cover them over they just get louder! We have a very loud Amazon who screams if the dogs are out the garden too long or I am in the kitchen too long. He screams when I sit down to eat because they are social animals who just have to share (doesn't do it to anyone else LOL) & he has the cheek to tell anyone else making a noise "Shut up" 😂. Most days I give up on my sanity and end up laughing at him - on and he can bark in every single one of my dog's voices & likes getting them in trouble LOL
Cynthia Isako Yes, we don't know where he licked it up from as we adopted him. He's learned a few things that I've tried to teach him but like children, parrots always repeat the things you least want them to LOL.
What's even freakier is that they sound EXACTLY like the person who they're mimicking. So people passing by the front window hearing a wolf whistle and a 'how you doing, sweetheart, give me a kiss' think it's ME instead of the bird. I got some weird looks from the neighbors when I first moved here. Now they're used to it, and they teach him words in polish which I don't understand. An old man who used to live next door died; every once in a while, I hear what sounds like his voice coming from my bird cage. It's a little unnerving.
The parrot family varies in how noisy they are; certain types tend to screech, others don't. African grays can screech but very rarely do so (haven't heard mine screech in years), however they have the capacity for high decibels at all kinds of sounds. If you want a relatively quiet parrot, get a pionus. I have one of those too, and other than his talking and whistling, he's virtually silent. NO screeching at all. BUT; he barks like a dog, so whenever someone walks by his window, I get the same noise that someone with a yappy mutt does. Lots of parrots learn to use english (or whatever language, or whatever sounds) to get what they want; when you respond in any way to a noise they can make, they learn to make that sound when they want the behavior that the sound gets you to do! So, just never respond in any way to a screech, make absolutely no response at all; don't yell, don't move or change your behavior in any way, and you'll get less screeching! People that get upset over screeching are actually giving the bird entertainment so the bird learns to get that entertainment by screeching. then he gets to see his human jump up and down and make noise too!
They aren't intrinsicly noisy; they don't usually screech on their own, but they learn other bird's sounds easily. So if you have another noisy bird, your gray will learn the 'noise'. And there's no way to know if a bird will talk. In discussions with other bird owners, it's possible that how you interact with your bird will determine how likely he is to talk. Treat him like a person, and maybe he'll act like a person. Remember, they only learn sounds (and words) that they want to. Make your bird want to talk to you and maybe he will. Talk to him all the time, as if you will be expecting an answer just like when you talk to another person. And if he sees you talking to another person, he'll get the idea that talking back is normal. I even had a lovebird that talked a little. So I believe it's not a question of if, but when they decide to talk.
Based on what she's saying the owner sounds like a nice caring person :)
and she gets offered a lot of food lol
She WANTS an apple
i agree
I personally believe any pets intelligence depends a lot on affection and attention. Being happy and loved is so important.
That's what I was thinking. I've heard parrots with foul mouths and it's because of their owners.

Omg this is so funny he's saying things that you say to him😂 like "get over here right now, cmon clover" xD
That’s insane. You can understand him. What a vocabulary. Unbelievable, what a smart bird. Lucky parents you are. Wow.
2:26
The parrot literally barked.
JaidenAnimations was right, these things are dogs.
When you nut. Omg, it's another BHD Fan
Oh snap
When you nut. 4:35 he whined like a dog
When you nut. Yay I’m 100th like
When you nut. Ari 4 the win
Clover totally rocks...honestly I was amazed. Thank you for posting.
Hahahaha when the parrot makes dog and husband noises.
BETTER than ANY Politician...😍😄😂He's LOVELY....
Thanks! And Clover is a "she"! :-)
If I didn't see it... I wouldn't believe it...
!!!WOW!!! Clover you are awesome.!!!🐦
This is crazy. Within the last minute this parrot mimicked:
the wife offering breakfast
someone gulping a drink
the couple kissing, saying I love you, and goodbye
the husband's voice
the dog whining
the smoke alarm needing a new battery
the wife's angry voice
It's funny how the bird seems to be talking to herself, saying what her owner would say to her.
absolutely mesmerizing!...what a magnificent creature!❤
I noticed that Clover did only a few repeats with the words and phrases, almost seeming to go down a mental list of known vocabulary. Pretty neat.
This bird must run for congress.
This bird speaks more coherently than most people do
I"M SOOOO GLAD YOU SHARED THE INFO ABOUT RAISING A PARROT. Ohhh you saved so many people from years of financial issues and frustration with the level of care. I'd say 90% of people have NO clue what they're getting into when they buy a talking bird. Great share.
What a great job you have done. Clover is a wonderful bird with a very caring owner. Nice work.
It's so funny yet amazing how he mimics that dog whine.
wow. I never knew how good they are talking. I might get myself a parrot some day
Giovanni Ambrosio same
Giovanni Ambrosio They can't actually speak their own sentences, they can only repeat what they've heard
Giovanni Ambrosio Don't just go out and get one because it can't talk well. Many if these bird's are given up after two years (85% of them to be exact). They're a lot of work...
Paula E I could imagine :/ but I love pets and animals enough to not give em up 😀
Giovanni Ambrosio Please dont buy for the sake of their talks they need really caring atmosphere some of them dont like humans they also have introvert and extrovert thing ask your pet seller about the bird you are buying .
He's Awesome😊.Beautiful 🐦!!
She sounds like a patient in a mental institution XD
😂😂😂😂
Well said you are 101% right
😂😂😂😂😅
That poor birdie needs to be free!
Lmao!!
Imagine a mother of a teenage daughter coming home, sifting through her mail and hearing her parrot say "I'm pregnant!" and "Don't tell mom" on repeat.
xthatwhiteguyx 😂😂😂 Omg,That Would Be Hilarious
imagine this bird copying sounds from pornhub or something.
Explain that to 'ye ol' wifey
GamingLife Do women really care if their husbands watch porn? Is that still a thing?
Some women consider it cheating on them, other women watch porn with and without their partners. It will always be a thing for some and not for others.
talking parrot
My friend used to have a bird like this. In the background you could always hear him yell "SHUT UP"
Hope he has a long happy life.
Thank you! She's now 16 years old, happy and healthy!
Jesse Lapham They understand what they are saying. Some actually say complete sentences but, these are much older PARROTS.
think again. The conversation may not flow but my bird converses appropriately when he wants to without prompting.
Someone put that poor bird in its boing
AngelusSpkGrrl
XD
The hell is a BOING?
AngelusSpkGrrl Funny girl.
AngelusSpkGrrl this kid is so stupid😂😂😂😂like he's dummer then a cat!😂😂😂😂😂😂I can't stop Laughing! Dosent know how to spell boring
Gail Sype that's an exception. And a rare one. Most animals are born inept.
Arnt*
@@randalljewell679 The birds she would own would be birds that would already be owned by someone else. So better to have a good owner. She didn't go out and steal it from the wild. Not that I don't understand where you're coming from.
it's really fantastic. it's an amazing bird . no doubt about the owner taking much care of the birdie. great work .
that is impressive!!! but does he have an off button...yikes
Where can I get a bird like this to purchase
Yumyumyum he actually tells them to shut up??! Haha how cute !
Cynthia Isako
Yes, we don't know where he licked it up from as we adopted him. He's learned a few things that I've tried to teach him but like children, parrots always repeat the things you least want them to LOL.
Yumyumyum just say "alexa off"
It's so interesting that they can make human sounds I can't get over that lol
What's even freakier is that they sound EXACTLY like the person who they're mimicking. So people passing by the front window hearing a wolf whistle and a 'how you doing, sweetheart, give me a kiss' think it's ME instead of the bird. I got some weird looks from the neighbors when I first moved here. Now they're used to it, and they teach him words in polish which I don't understand. An old man who used to live next door died; every once in a while, I hear what sounds like his voice coming from my bird cage. It's a little unnerving.
Dee B o wow that's creepy! They sound like fun pets though even though I heard they can make A LOT of noise
She even sounds like you, so cool
Absolutely superb. Still whistling!!!!!
