Just saw this episode today. The two people this episode centers on had no way of making fire. Some people just are not meant to go hiking in the wilderness, much less a desert.
Have you not heard that heating plastic bottles and drinking the water cause cancer? Also, on your fire video, that a huge amount of wood to consume. Living with Yogis in jungles taught the way of slowly burning a tree trunk that can take weeks to burn.
We're not talking about something you do every day you imbecilic moron. This shit is to save your life on the short term and that's it. Drinking water boiled in a plastic container will NOT increase your risk of cancer.
Water boiling times depend on altitude. Technically, it doesn't have to boil at all. Heat above 160 degrees F (about 70 C) will kill all pathogens. It will not remove impurities (mud, worms, bug guts). The correct order is: strain/filter first. Heat to in excess of 160 deg F. More heat doesn't hurt, of course, and if you are boiling creek water, you probably don't have a thermometer. Hence the SAS wisdom "big bubbles, no troubles". Since boiling point drops a degree for every 500 feet of elevation, you can get a rolling boil AND 160 degrees at up to 26,000 feet of elevation. If you are that high, and boiling water, you're a better man than me, Gunga Din. Point in fact, it's not particularly healthy to heat plastic up to boiling temps, but neither is dying of dehydration. This is about survival, not "the State of California says that eating, drinking, breathing causes cancer". Funny, they don't say anything bad about drug use or indiscriminate fornication -- go figure. Me, personally, I'd rather spray Roundup on the weeds than inhale marijuana.
Actually, you have to heat it to 180 F, but you're close. That's why the W.H.O. says to bring it to a rolling boil before drinking. Like you pointed out, "big bubbles, no troubles."
"United States Environmental Protection Agency, you should bring the water to boil and keep it rolling for one minute to purify it. At altitudes above one mile, 2,000 meters, you should increase the rolling time to three minutes."

Mary Kingsley true on the cancer part. But in an emergency situation would you rather die of dehydration or risk maybe getting cancer?

I wonder where do you get this

First
YOURE BEYOND INSANE.. water should be boiled a minimum of 10 to 15 minutes,,, strained and if possible boiled again
Not sure where you got that info., according to the CDC it only takes 1 minute at a rolling boil to kill pathogens.

Johhy, I hope to God you're being sarcastic.
Huh?
