Terracotta pots are the way to go with snake plants, they allow moisture to seep through the pots helping to prevent root rot. I tend to shy away from plastic or glazed pots. Just a helpful tip, ♥️.

I'm new to planets and I have a great fear of killing them. However, I bit the bullet and picked up a snake plant. Call him Vern. Got him in the window, watching this video and crossing my fingers in hoping I don't have to conduct a funeral in the up coming months. So, a lot is riding on this video to help me keep Vern alive. So, I'll be checking in from time to, time to re-educate myself on the care and wellbeing of my new buddy VERN!

These plants are one of the easiest to care for. Just move them around until they find a spot they are happy in. Not a difficult plant at all and water from the bottom, let them tell you how much water they want. They also love it outside, so if you have a patio or front yard with some shade, plant them and they will do great. A bit invasive, so they multiply quite a bit, but give you more plants that you can share with family and friends.

I got my grandma’s snake plant that she had for as long as I could remember. It was way over grown to the point it was tried together and leaning against a wall so it wouldn’t fall over. I got in last winter and didn’t want to start cutting it back until summer. The reading I did said not to cut more than 1/3 of the plant. I think I only saving 5-10% of the plant. I split in up into three pots, two of me and one for my mom. I water my two every week maybe two cups of water. They are in bigger pots but I knew they would be in shock. I think that was at the end of June and all of the shoots have new leaving and quite a lot of them.
As winter is coming I probably will go every other week or every 3 weeks with a couple cups water. So far I have had luck with my watering.

Our snake plants grow since 1987, some of them even in the same pot (very low light, almost no growth, but also no bad sideeffects, they just stay the way they are), some of them need to be repottet 3 times a year because they burst their rizomes through the plastic pots (those are on the window sill). The ones on the windows have many tiny little flowers (annoying to clean up) every year. We water them regularly every Saturday, and they seem to like it that way. The soil is the cheapest soil we could find in the gardening center, and is always kinda damp.
(some background information: 22 degrees indoors throughout the year, air humidity at about 55%, central european sun and climate)

I was gifted my snake plant 8+ years ago from a single stalk and have just done my first version of propagation. Ho-ly- Hell, if my guys survive it'll be despite me not because of me. Lol! I used water heavily during the process in a panic that the roots would get scorch and kill the individual pieces. I worried I had waited too long to separate it and that it was choking out. I left it in the sun too long and it bleached to the palest yellow.Thank goodness this plant is a beast and has been able to withstand my ministrations. I thought this would be a plant able to survive my 5% sun exposure home. Now I feel negligent on that front as well, uuugh! It survived but was it happy?

I move mine outdoors for summer. ( Alabama) once acclimated to bright light, I give it the best sunny spot. Last summer it rained almost every day. They didn't rot ! They grew well. This summer was very dry. They didn't get water for 23 days. Still doing great.
The most important thing is sun. They're adaptable. Most people stuff them in a dark corner and expect great things . The most it'll do is not die.

Yeah, Snake plants are actually full sun plants so they do incredibly well when outdoors.

I had15 snake pants now i have 3. Cause i did just what you and everyone else said. I watered them once a moth. But the root system had dried up and the plant died.

Great video :) another good tip to get pups from your snake plant is to repot it, I noticed each time I repot my plants they give new shoots and babies. You don't have to place them in a bigger pot just repot them in a same sized pot, I don't know why but each time I repot mine they give new babies :)

I bought two whale fins this summer one regular and the other variegated. the regulat WF has already pushed two pups and one of them is almost as big as the Mother plant already. shocked as I had heard they are super slow to grow. I am excited about this though. I have plans for both pups.

Great video! I was wondering if you could tell me why my snake plants won't grow upright. They spill over like a fountain. They are in a southeast corner window that looks onto a covered porch so the light is filtered. They are healthy and in taller narrow pots. Thank you.

Good one. I really appreciate you talking about every plant even the one people usually do not talk about like jade and Sansavierias.
I ave several of the latter and really love them. They also flower. I find the perfume pleasant and stronger at night.
