My name is Brandon and I am a used car dealer. I created Car Questions Answered to share the ins and outs of the used car market from my perspective. I share with you updates on car prices, what's happening at the dealer auctions, and what it's like being a dealer. My goal is to share information to help you make the best decisions while buying a car to save you money. I do not want car dealers taking advantage of you.

Cars in the 50-70s would only run about 90K miles or so before needing major motor work. But, you could literally rebuild an old Big Six alongside the road with hand tools.
Dad did. He hitchhike into town with the head to have it checked while getting the rest of the parts. (No kits back then, you had to account for every part you would need. Did you know that replacing babbit bearings can be done using the leather belt to your trousers? Try that on a Prius!)
Yes, vehicles have come a long ways. But now, it's like riding a train, if it breaks, you're not fixing it and traveling on. It's always too complicated, or needs special tools, or it'll be three days till the parts in. And if you're dying in the desert and save yourself by fixing your own car, you're voiding the warranty.
I'm just not impressed by the overall state of the car industry these days.
    Maybe it's just me, but...

I hit them w/ some facts of the current car market crisis and told them it would be a massive financial mistake to even consider it. I asked them why would I get rid of my car in this market just to have to end up paying more afterwards for a similar car? They really do think were fools.

Those are boilerplate sales calls. They are trying to convince any buyer who bought from them to trade in and buy a new car. They are going to call everyone they have contact info for and say anything they can to convince their previous customers to buy a new car.

I once heard the Car Wizard say that "Only 25% of people take care of their cars." I'm assuming he's basing that statistic on his experience working on cars and running a shop for years. I know from my experience people used to not only drive better but take better care of their cars back in the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc. The fact that there are so many pitfalls at the auctions just tells you it's true, most people don't take care of their cars hence you have to be checking these cars with OBD scanners and a fine toothed comb because most of them have been neglected in some way. This helps push up the new car market because since you can't trust most used cars, at least with a new car you have a factory warranty and all that. Of course you have massive depreciation too. I wish we didn't have to roll the dice on used cars like we do. But makes sense, most people can't afford these car payments, they'll do anything not to have to pay for maintenance of any kind.

@@oimfc37 But my point is, people used to look after their cars a hell of a lot more back in the day. If your local bank approved you for a brand new '69 Chevy truck you'd look after that truck like it's the last truck ever made. Today people sign on the line, beat the crap out of the car, make 5 payments then they get repo'd and by the time you see the car at auction it's a disaster. Goes along with the different kind of people we have in this country, not the same we used to have.

What I fail to see is why franchise dealers don’t start their own used car lots and sell these vehicles themselves, eliminating the auction and competition from used car dealers like yourself. Used cars usually sell as is so as long as your not selling junk the dealership’s reputation should be fine!

I'd avoid model years 2005-2010. They had problems with timing chain and a defect in Radiator that mixed trans/rad fluids which would destroy transmission. Unfortunately only leaves you two model years 2011/2012. Just sad it took Nissan so long to fix those issues. Otherwise a great body on frame SUV.
