  • A few months ago it looked like Carlos Sainz had free reign of the 2025 driver market, and could go pretty much wherever he wanted! Now that landscape looks completely different, and he might just be making a mistake that leaves him off the Formula One grid entirely...

If this is the case, I feel like Sainz has been let down by his management team, because they should have been hammering down Toto Wolff's office door until he signed Sainz.
Mercedes are not the first team to go down a developmental dead-end, and they have been showing (small) signs of improving even before this season, and it's not like the team has emptied out its expertise. The team prides itself on giving both drivers fair crack at results and I think Sainz would be a good fit for that kind of atmosphere; he's always worked well with teammates, never really rocked the boat and this season has shown his work-ethic by actually bothering to make an effort.
And Merc do seem to be in a much better position this season; the car is getting better and the team hasn't imploded the way Alpine have. So Hamilton's seat should (in my opinion) been at the very top of Sainz's wishlist and his management team should have done absolutely everything to get it.
I like Sainz a lot, he's a great driver, fantastic team-player but also an impeccable role model on how to conduct himself and so should at least be in a Top 6 team. Having to settle for Williams or Alpine, or out of F1 completely feels like a waste of his talents

He wants to be at a big team. Mercedes are a big team, so he would want to be with them long term. A one year deal puts him in the exact same position again, since it shows they're likely to replace him so he'll be back looking for contracts in a year.
On the other hand, he wants a short deal at his next team, because if he's at a lower, midfield team, he's probably wanting to take a shorter deal so it's easy to hop over if a red bull, mercedes or McLaren seat opened up for whatever reason.

Sorry, but it seems you are making the mistake of not adding context or doing any research.
The correct statment would have been:
"Antonelli's F2 results make it clear that Prema dropped the ball this year and that he is paying for it."
The reality is that F2 has a new reg of cars this year and to the surprise of pretty much everyone, the once supreme Prema team doesn't know how to get on top of these cars.
Bearman and Kimi were both rated highly and expected to be at or near they top before the start of the season and they are scrapping in the midfield and bottom. So, it's very fair to say they are being let down by the team/car.
At the very least, for normal outsiders like you and I, the picture is very muddy in terms of whether he is doing great or bad in that car. But the engineers and Merc will know. For now, it seems he is handling the shit box better than Bearman, though.

Idk man I feel like everyone that wanted him before wants him now. If Mercedes wanted him, he would have already signed with them before. Same for Redbull.
Mclaren has 2 drivers already and all other teams are still just waiting for him to sign.
I think he should just suck it up and drive for Sauber until they turn Audi. He wont be having any great car either way in 2025. Currently the best looking one is maybe the Haas or the Alpine, but the midfield is so close it really doesnt matter. Sauber looked decently fast last race weekend as well just to look like the 2021 Haas in Austria again.
so yeah it doesnt matter. Just get yourself a seat at Sauber and suck up 1 year of driving in the midfield car (which you have to do anyway) which maybe is a little bit less competitive.
I mean loot at the AM right now. They looked great for Alonso and when he got there he was driving to some podiums, but now they are cruising at the back of the field again.. You cant predict it so it just doesnt matter.

Carlos should just sign a multi-year deal with Williams with some opt-out clauses after a year. I don't understand why this is so hard to get done. Williams is the perfect backmarker team to sign with. You have James Vowles as Team Principal, who by all accounts seems to be one of the best equipped for that particular job. You have Albon as a teammate, a very good but beatable driver. The team itself has nowhere to go but upwards, and Carlos can be integral in making that happen. If he achieves even moderate success there, it will increase his stock significantly, and if he doesn't, then it's the car/team's fault.
And I don't care who Alpine brings into the organization, I still wouldn't trust them. Flavio certainly has the capability to turn that team around if given the control and resources, but the upper management have shown time and time again that they are the problem, and I'm not even sure the team will still be Alpine (or Renault-owned) 5 years from now. In fact, I'd be kind of surprised if it was. I also doubt Famin's ability to be a Team Principal, although maybe he deserves more time in the role before casting judgement.

Won't happen next year. The plan was for 2026 and that got rejected. GM are losing interest so their main backing and power unit supplier is in doubt. F1 f-ed up big time with Andretti.

I'm a fan of the smooth operator, but I'd kind of like to see Carlos in formula-e or even Indy. It is hard to have much sympathy for all these millionaires. They make more in one race than most of us will make our entire lives, and most of us can't even afford to see a whole race weekend. I say put some sort of limit/expiration on the super licenses, spread the wealth, and enjoy the excitement that would bring to the grid. I don't watch to see records broken or the constructor's championship (all the jelly beans!) anyway.

I think this is on him. He was practically guaranteed that someone would want him, but hes been messing around too many teams. If you're in F1 in a midfield team, you can still show your worth, if you're on the sidelines, you can't. Sainz belongs in a race winning team, but none is available, so really he should have signed for audi, give it 2 years, see how they do, keep driving well and then 2027 you have options potentially, that is, if audi don't hit the ground running and show future promise
