Really crisp and sharp review, thanks for demonstrating the burst modes, never found anyone doing that.Others just go on delivering long speeches sidelining the camera itself which is the focus of the video.Compliments!!
The video quality is so unreal, it almost looks like a movie. I just bought the camera yesterday and tried it out and I can say I definitely got my moneys worth.
I just purchased this and it's THE BEST. I'm no photography or techie expert but I need no effort to take ridiculously almost-flawless photos. I love it.
They're quite different, really. SX40 HS's main advantage is its big zoom, with the G12, it's lots of buttons and dials for adjusting settings. Both great cameras, but if you're inclined towards the G12 I'd seriously consider the Fujifilm X10 instead - I'll be publishing a review very soon.
@shortsharpreviews You seem to really know your stuff. Upon wacthing the ELPH 310 HS video I grew attracted to the Canon 230 HS. You mentioned that it limits at 10 minutes of video which is absolutely fine seeing as I don't even expect my videos to be that long. Thank you!
Ur reviews are amazingly crisp & awesome...just need 1 suggestion ...i shot videos a lot than pics espcially of trains which is a moving object would FZ150 b d best choice or any other bridge camera u wud recommend as am highly confused between SX40 & FZ150...thank u in advance
@shortsharpreviews Thanks for the quick response. I was looking more into decent video cameras later today. I came across the Panasonic Lumix GH2 and G3. I'm pretty sure that the GH2 has better quality as well as more features, but I might be able to get the G3 for much cheaper than both the GH2 and the FZ150. What would you suggest?
So the FZ150 has a much faster autofocus system? If so I think I will pick that over the longer zoom of the Canon. 600mm is already more than enough for my current needs, since I'm alredy used to shooting with 200mm on a DLSR :D
Again, the SX40 and G1X are very different to each other, so it's hard to compare. SX40 has a massive zoom so good for sports, wildlife, sightseeing. G1X has fantastic image quality in low light - just as good as an SLR. So it depends what's more important. I'll hopefully be completing my review of the G1X soon.
@Pulkadrage No, the SX40 HS doesn't accept an external mic. The Panasonsic FZ150 does though - see my review on my channel. It's an unusual connection (2.5mm) but you can get an adapter to connect a 3.5mm plug. Or just record audio onto a dedicated audio recorder. It's more of a hassle, especially when you come to edit, but it's useful to be able to monitor the audio on headphones - something no digital camera can do.
i was planning to buy the sx30 but i think this one is better ....I have 4 Qs: 1-how much is it more expensive than the sx30? 2-does it make noise while zooming? 3-can I capture while recording a video? 4-what are the differences between the two? thaaaaaaaanks for the amazing review =)
@Pulkadrage It's just a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter - make sure it's the right way around though... you need a 2.5mm plug and a 3.5mm socket. Some are just a solid adapter widget and some are a cable with a plug and socket on either end - the cable type is better because it puts less strain on the camera's microphone socket.
@galaxyships I just got mine 2 days ago, and am really enjoying it! I was doing tons of research, and comparing lots and lots of homemade videos here between the SX40HS, and it's two main competitors, the Panasonic FZ150 and the Sony HX1000V, and came to the conclusion that they were equal with regards to sharpness, and also the Canon photo quality was the same, if not better than the other two. Some people prefer the other two because apparently you have more manual options and the RAW mode.
@CarlitxTricks92 I haven't tested the S100 yet but I'd anticipate that it's even better than the SX40 for image quality, thanks to its larger sensor size and brighter lens. It's also much slimmer, but it's 5x zoom lens isn't a patch on the SX40 HS's 35x zoom. Go for the S100 if you need something highly portable and take a lot of photos in low light. Go for the SX40 HS if you like to zoom in on faraway subjects.
@shortsharpreviews - How about the Canon SX30 IS, i know that's not any lighter but is there a difference between that and sx40, because im getting sx30 IS 40-50 dollars cheaper online....
Hope my answer is not too late. So I have 3 cameras. A Nikon D90 for portraits. It's quite heavy cca 1 kg with lens. A Panasonic Lumix G6 mainly for time-lapse purposes. It's lighter cca 0,4 kg. And a SX40 mainly for hikings and travelling. It's also light cca 0,4 kg. So if light mass is important for you I recommend it.
@mohammadzafar It's 600g including its battery - that's a little heavier than other ultra-zoom cameras (the Panasonic FZ150 is 528g) but a little lighter than entry level SLRs (Canon 1100D/T3 is 695g with its kit lens). If you want something much lighter, consider the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS - very similar quality/performance to the SX40 HS but only has a 14x zoom... but also fits in pockets and weighs 230g.
Hello, I'm pretty new to this camera and cameras overall, but we're filming alot. I was wondering if you can put a microphone on the SX40 since there is no external mic output? Grateful for answer!
@Surfakingdom Ultra-zooms and SLRs are very different kinds of camera. The SX40 HS takes great pictures compared to any other ultra-zoom but image quality isn't a patch on the t3i and most other SLRs, especially in low light. The t3i is generally much faster too, although only if you use its viewfinder - it focuses really slowly when using the screen to compose shots. The main advantage of the SX40 HS is its enormous zoom - great for wildlife, sports and macro photography.
@LazerLord10 Yes cap: yes. Zoom during video is optical. Normal videos are at 1080p (ie 1920x1080) at 24fps, but there's an alternative mode that captures at 640x480 and 120fps, and another at 320x240 and 240fps. These play back at 30fps for 1/4- and 1/8-speed slow motion but the resolution is much lower than the 1080p videos.
I think you can get conversion lenses that strap onto the front but only to improve the macro mode, not to extend the telephoto for shooting faraway animals. Then again, it's pretty good for that already.
@GayanPethiyagoda Depends on your budget, but in terms of entry-level SLRs, my current favourites are the Nikon D3100 and Pentax K-r. The Pentax is a bargain at the moment - a mid-range SLR at an entry-level price. Superb image quality, fast performance, great controls. Only downside is that there aren't the same number of lenses are there are for Nikon and Canon SLRs, particularly low cost ones. If that puts you off, go for the Nikon D3100.
I'm trying to find myself a good digital camera because I can't afford a DSLR. So far, I'm debating between Canon SX40, CanonSX30, or Panasonic FZ150, I've also heard some good reviews for a Coolpix P500. I'm planning on using the camera for whale watching/nature stuff. So I will need something that can take pictures quickly and in good detail (both video and picture). What are your suggestions? Because I really want to make sure I'm getting a good camera for the money.
@dummerbube That's a good point. The T3 / 1100D is in a different league for image quality, particularly in low light. (See my Panasonic FZ150 review which compares image quality to the Canon EOS 600D.) However, you'd have to spend a fortune on lenses to get the same 24-840mm focal length range and macro facility with an SLR. The SX40 HS is much more affordable and compact given the flexibility of its lens.
hi.. nice review...! well im a bit confuse between this camera, nikon p500, and sony hx100v.... while nikon is cheaper... sony offers cool features like 3d imaging... can u suggest me one. my main concern is image quality with best image stabalisation... and ease to use... thanks..
It's a short, sharp review, so I'm not going to fault it missing out some important omissions from the SX40's spec, but I am going to mention them. Firstly, there's no hotshoe and secondly it has no remote shutter facility. But the real SX40 killer for me was the scren resultion: HALF that of the Panasonic. Pathetic! Add the lazy-slow operation and the SX40 is a dead-end that will frustrate as often as it delights. And how can it claim to achieve 10 FPS if it can't sustain it for a second!? :-D
@Blargh665 I don't have the camera in front of me, but if memory serves, it's on the mode dial on top of the camera - the icon of a running man, just below AUTO. It's in a different place to the other burst mode options as this mode isn't available at the same time as manual exposure control etc.
I've not tested the P510 yet, but with its 16-megapixel sensor I'd be surprised if it outperformed the SX40 HS for noise levels in low light. Its 42x zoom sounds pretty impressive though.
@weezyed The E-PL3 and E-P3 are very different to the SX40 HS. They have much bigger sensors, which gives better image quality, especially in low light. Their kit lens has a much smaller zoom - 3x compared to 35x - but detachable lenses mean you can upgrade them. However, you could pay $1000s on lenses and still not match the SX40 HS's 35x zoom range and macro facility. So it's Olympus for better quality or Canon for more versatility.
@JulieRitchie97 Yes, both. There's a built in pop-up flash, and also an accessory hotshoe (underneath a plastic cover) for a Canon Speedlite (or similar) external flashgun.
Hello shortsharpreviews, I bought this camera a couple of weeks ago and I can't seem to find the burst setting that you talked about where it took 8 photos. Your help would be appreciated:)
@loganlakmal Might be just because there's not enough sharp detail in the sky for the camera to focus on. Most cameras get confused when pointed at the sky/clouds. Best thing to do is set the camera to manual focus and then adjust it to infinity focus.
@simon44 I've just finished testing the X-S1. It's a phenomenal camera and the best ultra-zoom i've ever used. Its only slightly weak area is video - the picture is a little blocky and there's no control over video exposure..
hey ! Awesome review ! i just wanna know , i want to buy this camera but what good more to video , the sx30is onw or this (sx40hs) ? cuz the megapixels of this camera is 12 and the 30 one is 14 ! so i dont know .. please answer me =)
@fabulust09 Yes, there are options to take photos at 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9 aspect ratios. Videos are widescreen unless you choose the basic VGA (640x480) option.
Sx40is dosnt offer raw,it has a loud zoom noise ,images look great ,stereo mic are position on front thus causing a near half ear close effect while the fz150 offers stereo mica dynamically on top ,fz150 offers raw,fz150 offers fast zoom speeds while filming ,and has a 3200 iso option and looks pretty good ,especially when you edit in raw mode.
Hi, I have two cameras in mind, one is the Sony HX100V & this SX40 HS... Which one would you recommend? Im in a real dilemma here & cannot make up my mind... Brand & quality wise canon is far ahead but the HX100V has some good features like Sweep Panorama, Back Ground Defocusing, Manual Focus etc etc but i am worried because sony even though they have a good reputation I kinda doubt their cameras & I don't notice any feature junkie using a sony! Its either a Nikon or Canon.... Pls help me out..
Some people have questioned my shot-to-shot performance results. If anyone can get significantly faster performance than a shot every three seconds (single drive mode, 12MP), please post a video and I'll link to it.
@JoeSzilagy I agree with you regarding her videos. They prompted me to buy the canon sx40hs two weeks ago. While I am yet to learn the manual controls, I have used program, auto and scene modes. I am happy with the results that I have got.
@ThreeGuysTechReviews Lumix G cameras are superb for video - even better than the FZ150. One drawback is that only the GH2 has manual control over video exposures. Not so important for casual use but for creative projects the G3 might be frustrating. Also worth considering the Nikon J1 - I'm hoping to review this here soon.
@XPmichaliXP the SX40 HS is much better than the SX30 IS. The truth is, when you've got a sensor the size of your little finger nail, packing more and more pixels in actually starts to reduce image quality - the pixels become so tiny that the picture becomes really noisy. That's why lots of manufacturers are dropping from 14MP to 12MP this year. (SLRs have more megapixels but their sensors are ten times the size.)
@Mtcrazyguitar It's a great choice if you're interested in telephoto photography (ie wildlife, sports) or macro (insects etc), and image quality is great for this type of camera. If you're more interested in photographing people, landscapes etc, I'd recommend an SLR - image quality and performance are in a different league, and controls tend to be better too. My SLR reviews to follow shortly, but at this price I'd recommend Nikon D3100 or Pentax K-r.
@CarlitxTricks92 The FZ150 is great for video. Yes, the 50fps mode needs a fast computer to play them back, but you can also shoot at 25fps (it's actually 50fps interlaced, but the result is the same - easier for computers to play/edit)
@JoeSzilagy I have yet to try the video mode. Even I found the image quality very good. I dont need to resort to post production editing in photoshop or gimp, etc. Before buying the sx40hs i did go through lots of reviews on youtube including drewnetwork and fatdragon100. Even though it is slightly expensive as compared to other bridge cameras, it is worth every penny. I do not regret spending so much on this camera as it is giving me the image quality that i need. I recommend this camera.
@Maio0oia Yes it's a much better camera than the SX30 for image and photo quality. It tends to be a bit more expensive because it's newer - I'll leave you to check local prices - but it's definitely worth the extra. The zoom motor is picked up by the microphone in videos but it's pretty subtle. It can't take photos while recording videos. For this feature and silent zooming, go for the Panasonic FZ150.
Hi I'm looking for a camera that have high quality with both video and picture..which one is better Canon PowerShot SX40 HS or Canon PowerShot SX130 which one do you recommend? or other good camera as well please answer and thanks! :)
I've just reviewed the HS30 at Expert Reviews (moving house and no time to make a RUclips video, sorry). Both great cameras but of the two I'd go for the SX40.
@Twolf1613 I'd avoid the sx30 but otherwise that's a good short list, especially for nature photography. As that's a priority, I'd recommend the FZ150 as it's so much faster than the others - gives you 4 or 5 shots to choose from whereas the others would only take one or two.
GF3 is smaller, faster and better in low light, but no zoom function with its pancake lens. SX40 has a much more versatile lens so better for wildlife, macro.
@atq42 Sony makes some great cameras (particularly the NEX range), but between these two models, the SX40 HS wins it with its superior image quality. The HX100V does have some great features but its sensor is noisier and its colour processing isn't as flattering.
@RAWRnomnomIMMYDEE95 Yes, it works really well on Auto mode so you don't need to be a photography expert to use it. Having said that, if you just want a point and shoot camera there's no need to spend this much and get something this bulky - you might be better off with something like the Canon Ixus 230 HS (see the review on my channel). But if you want to get into photography as a creative hobby, the SX40 HS is a great choice.
@CuteFunnyMusicGirls @Blargh665 Sorry, I was wrong and Fatherof5ive is right... it's not the running man icon. You need to select SCN on the dial on the top oft the camera and then press FUNC. SET and select High-speed Burst HQ from the scene preset options.
@babythuyngoc The SX130 IS is a solid low-cost option, but the SX40 HS is much better for image quality, has a bigger zoom - is generally a better camera. If you want something more compact but still with a big zoom, I'd recommend the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS or Fujifilm F600EXR.
@BigBangfanable OK, taking video out of the equation... the Canon is a little better than the Panasonic, especially in low light. The Panasonic is much faster. So if you tend to take a lot of photos indoors, go for the Canon. If you often photograph fast-moving subjects (animals, children etc), or if you like to take a lot of photos quickly, then go for the Panasonic. There's nothing much to choose between them for manual controls - both are pretty good in that respect.
@XPmichaliXP Autofocus speed is about the same, as far as I remember. The SX40 HS is faster in continuous mode. If you want speed, consider the Panasonic FZ150 (see the review on my RUclips channel).
@RAWRnomnomIMMYDEE95 Depends on your priorities - Canon has slightly better image quality but Panasonic is much faster. Personally, I'd go for the Panasonic.
@esselp I've been enjoying it so much experimenting with the video mode that I keep forgetting that it's a camera too! In fact, it's a camera first! And to me the photo quality is as good, or almost as good, as my Canon XTi DSLR !
Almost all comments at older than 5 years... currently in 2024 , im learning to use this camera . My dad had brought it 10 yrs ago
Same
Same
Dang same 😂 we're all here. Hope you all learn and have fun and have cool results 🙏🏽
It was just given to me today
Finally a short and to the point honest review of the camera which i was looking for a long time. Good job!

i was planning to buy the sx30 but i think this one is better ....I have 4 Qs:

2-does it make noise while zooming?
3-can I capture while recording a video?
4-what are the differences between the two?
thaaaaaaaanks for the amazing review =)
@Pulkadrage It's just a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter - make sure it's the right way around though... you need a 2.5mm plug and a 3.5mm socket. Some are just a solid adapter widget and some are a cable with a plug and socket on either end - the cable type is better because it puts less strain on the camera's microphone socket.
@ThreeGuysTechReviews I'd recommend the FZ150 if videos are a priority. Longer clip lengths, quieter zoom, manual exposure for videos.
Highly recommend this camera. AMAZING.
@galaxyships I just got mine 2 days ago, and am really enjoying it! @shortsharpreviews I certainly will! Now, can you tell me why when my knee hit my desk really hard just now the inside of my right ear began to throb?

Thx
@dummerbube That's a good point. The T3 / 1100D is in a different league for image quality, particularly in low light. No, it does not
No, its not*
@shortsharpreviews - thank you for your help :)
@shortsharpreviews okay thank you so much :]
and the focus in this camera more good and speed than the 30 one ? :)

No, you can't change the lens on this type of camera. The upside is that the lens is pretty versatile - wide-angle, macro, telephoto.

Hello shortsharpreviews, I bought this camera a couple of weeks ago and I can't seem to find the burst setting that you talked about where it took 8 photos.

If you want to decide on which one you'd go 150-fz or Sx40HS and if u consider the Sx40HS is CHDK enabled (hacked)?
@AlbernDc Select SCN on the dial on the top of the camera and then press FUNC. SET and select High-speed Burst HQ from the scene preset options.

Hi,
I have two cameras in mind, one is the Sony HX100V & this SX40 HS...
@pablosanroman0 No, it has a non-removable lens. If you want to use different lenses you'll need an SLR or mirrorless system camera.
@JoeSzilagy I agree with you regarding her videos. They prompted me to buy the canon sx40hs two weeks ago. While I am yet to learn the manual controls, I have used program, auto and scene modes. I am happy with the results that I have got.
What would you suggest for recording youtube vlogs under $300?
What about the Fuji 1-SX? I think its called. Is that better than the FZ150 for video mode?
@ThreeGuysTechReviews Lumix G cameras are superb for video - even better than the FZ150. One drawback is that only the GH2 has manual control over video exposures. Not so important for casual use but for creative projects the G3 might be frustrating. Also worth considering the Nikon J1 - I'm hoping to review this here soon.
What camera did you get?
My SLR reviews to follow shortly, but at this price I'd recommend Nikon D3100 or Pentax K-r.
what do you think of canon 1100 D , i have no idea if its good or not
what about the sx40 vs. the g1x? (which one is better for versality and good amount of different in-camera options?)
@CarlitxTricks92 The FZ150 is great for video. Yes, the 50fps mode needs a fast computer to play them back, but you can also shoot at 25fps (it's actually 50fps interlaced, but the result is the same - easier for computers to play/edit)
@RJL17 Canon quotes it as 380 shots based on CIPA testing standard - that's about average for an ultra-zoom bridge camera
@mohammadzafar The SX40 HS is a massive improvement over the SX30 IS for image quality. Best to avoid the SX30 IS.
Hi, I don't know if these are even comparable but Canon sx40 hs or Lumix DMC-GF3 ?
Hi I'm looking for a camera that have high quality with both video and picture..which one is better Canon PowerShot SX40 HS or Canon PowerShot SX130 which one do you recommend? or other good camera as well please answer and thanks! :)
Would this camera be good for short distance video shooting?
I've just reviewed the HS30 at Expert Reviews (moving house and no time to make a RUclips video, sorry). Both great cameras but of the two I'd go for the SX40.
@Twolf1613 I'd avoid the sx30 but otherwise that's a good short list, especially for nature photography. As that's a priority, I'd recommend the FZ150 as it's so much faster than the others - gives you 4 or 5 shots to choose from whereas the others would only take one or two.
Witch is better then the lumix or the Canon? For taking photos.
Comparing
-Canon PowerShot SX40 HS
-Nikon P510
what shall I get better ? n why?
GF3 is smaller, faster and better in low light, but no zoom function with its pancake lens. SX40 has a much more versatile lens so better for wildlife, macro.
@atq42 Sony makes some great cameras (particularly the NEX range), but between these two models, the SX40 HS wins it with its superior image quality. The HX100V does have some great features but its sensor is noisier and its colour processing isn't as flattering.
did you buy any camera at all? if you did, what camera? =)
You know what? fuck all those 10min review, short, TO THE POINT !!! i LVOE IT, GREAT JOB !!!!!
What are the different lens for it. Mainly better zoom for far away animals.
There's nothing much to choose between them for manual controls - both are pretty good in that respect.
is this camera better than the OLYMPUS E-PL3 or E-P3? please be honest
What camera was this video filmed with?
Which is better, Powershot SX40 HS or Powershot G12?
is there manual focus while shooting in movie mode?
@XPmichaliXP Autofocus speed is about the same, as far as I remember. The SX40 HS is faster in continuous mode. If you want speed, consider the Panasonic FZ150 (see the review on my RUclips channel).
Hi there,, what do you think about fujifilm finepix hs30????
@greg3o3 I *think* so but I can't remember for sure. Can any SX40 HS owners confirm?
@pablosanroman0 there is a fisheye effect in the camera while shooting pics. hope this helps.
@RAWRnomnomIMMYDEE95 Depends on your priorities - Canon has slightly better image quality but Panasonic is much faster. Personally, I'd go for the Panasonic.
would this camera be good for vlogs?
@ExtremeScooters24 Sadly no. For that, consider the Panasonic FZ150 or Fujifilm X-S1 (see my other recent comment)
i just bought mine today and i cant find the hq (high speed burst) thing. which was one of the reasons i bought it, but i cant find it.
Should i get a panasonic fz150 or a canon sx40 hs.
@esselp I've been enjoying it so much experimenting with the video mode that I keep forgetting that it's a camera too! In fact, it's a camera first! And to me the photo quality is as good, or almost as good, as my Canon XTi DSLR !
