- This was a stretch for me. I pushed myself a bit further than I usually do because I’ve always dreamt of flying - literally I have dreams about it. At the same time… I went to cognitive behavioral therapy for a year and a half to get over my FEAR of flying. It mostly worked, but I still have to deal with fear every time I get on a plane - it’s not like it’s gone - it’s just that I now have some techniques to process it, so it ends up feeling less horrible. Anyway all that to say, getting my pilot’s license to be able to paramotor was a bit of a complicated decision for me. But I’m glad I did it. I have a belief that people are capable of change - that anyone is capable of deep, broad, expansive growth. And part of the reason I did this trip was because I wanted to give myself another proof point in support of that belief.

This video strikes such a chord for me. I’m a Paramotor pilot of 4 years who taught professionally for 2. I started making videos about flying 1.5 years ago and since moved out to Cali to fly and make movies about it full time. A lot of my income comes from Patreon. I’ve been listening to scary pockets for 3 years- they have been the soundtrack to hundreds of my flights, and now I come to find out Jack is flying Paramotors! If there’s any way you see this jack, please reach out. I’m just trying to figure out the whole content creation thing. Sorry youre having a hard time with some of these fears I’d love to take you flying and work through some of these. Reach out!
You must one of - if not the - bravest content creators I know. This story shows both your triumph, and the pain (terror) you had to endure to get there. Anxiety is a real thing that millions of people deal with every day. Triumph notwithstanding, this video shows that it’s OK to feel anxiety. If Jack Conte can go through it and be such a stunning success in life - there’s hope for the rest of us. Thanks so much for this.

Watch everything you put out, going back to the days when you and Nat were working out of her (?) apartment. This m’effer I am watching again. When it dropped a month ago I was thunderstruck by what Natalie said to you about not wanting to be with someone who lives in fear, or something to that effect. That descended over me as a fundamental truth about myself. My friends and family think I am so strong, and I am, but a lot of my life has been propelled and overshadowed by fear and anxiety. Fuck that! I am a 70 year old woman who acknowledged that self truth, gleaned from you transparently sharing this nugget. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!! It not only has helped me understand myself better, but to be more patient with others.

Jack, you are SO far away from being a wimp, not only for the incredible way you succeeded at this, but even from the very beginning of deciding to go with all you have and confront your fears as a first thought. I am an old fan, and I mean old like from 14 years ago! I just gotta let you know what a genius you are with the editing and the drawn frames when you explained about you handling the fear on the plane. Beautiful and inspiring just that little sequence alone, I don't know how you did it but it got me inspired to try to do something like that myself. Everything that goes along with it, like you writing your own music for your video and the little clip of you pushing buttons and stuff was like the best red thread and reminder of the old music content you used to do in your childhood bedroom. I love you and your content and music and I always will and you will forever be a true inspiration to me in my life! I have to be honest though, I had a very unique reaction to this video: as great as it is that you pushed thru your fear and took the leap into the sky in this way and joined the very small flying community in the US, I was a bit shocked that you are now a paraglider pilot. This hits very close to home for me... I've been flying paragliders and paramotors since 2009 and I've been teaching for the past several years in NC. This would all great, if I hadn't already been part of your community and had some level of experience with your world before now.
Last year, I found out about you and Pomplamoose and Scary Pockets and became a patron of both groups on Patreon... and thought I might actually have a chance to connect with you more directly... but I realize that was wishful thinking at the time - you are a busy guy and I'm just some random dude online... but ultimately my experience as a patron wasn't stellar and I decided to cancel my patronage as it felt like I got lost in the shuffle and that my approach to connecting with you there was a dead end.
I'm stoked for you and I'm hopeful we might actually have a chance to connect one day, and in the meantime I hope you continue flying and might be willing to help support the flying community in a more meaningful way. There's lots of ways to help, feel free to reach out anytime for ideas.

This is a fantastic video/story, Jack.
3rd attempt selfie shot gave me chills. So visceral. I could feel your “last shot” determination through the screen only to watch your facial expression morph to “OK this is happening” such a range of emotion and adrenaline in that first flight. More pilots struggle with the same fear than are willing to admit. Brilliant, revealing, humble look into your experience. Trust me it only gets waaay better!

Jack, I love this video! This is better than most (all?) reality content on television yet it feels like another episode in a loosely-threaded series you're doing on risk-taking and commitment. The sound design, the scoring, the mixed-media artistry. The buildup to launch, finding courage, and the euphoria expressed when you finally rocket yourself into the air. This video was clearly a massive effort by a small team of creatives yet has the intimacy of a vlog. Congratulations on your adventure and thank you for making this.

Awesome story! i got into paramotoring for similar reasons. I don't really consider myself to have a fear of heights as much as a fear of FALLING from heights. As long as I have something around me, like the cockpit of an airplane or the structure of a building, I'm fine. But to be out in the air without something around me, I tend to get a little anxious. I didn't want a fear to have power over me so I took up paramotoring. There are still times when I'm up in my "flying lawn chair" that I have to talk myself calm so I totally understand the panic attack. I started out motoring and now want to get into free flight. It looks peaceful up there without a noisy sky blender on you back! Paramotoring is full of awesome folks! If you ever find yourself down in Louisiana, we've got a great bunch of guys to fly with.

I have watched a lot of "learning to paramotor" stories. This one is on a whole 'nother level - so good! I literally threw my hands in the air in celebration when you took off with the motor. Love this to death man! Fear (as they say) is the mind-killer. Now I totally want to be a 'bookman' (but only if I can show up for the morning sing-a-long and then split!).
So as far as paragliding goes I would say being towed is the most terrifying thing you can do. I've done it behind boats for SIV menuvers and it still makes me feel uneasy even after like 15+ times.

Excellent video, I too almost passed out on my first paramotor flight and then threw up when I landed thinking id made a terrible mistake and how am I going to sell my brand new paramotor. I stuck with it and now I love it more than anything ive ever done and fly every chance I get. If you are ever in Northern CA come fly with us. Also hope to see you at Salton Sea. :)

I love all of your old old video songs aswell as the EDM-Songs you absolutely worked your butt off to make your vision into reality and it is inspiring. I am currently doing an apprenticeship as Electronic engineer and am in my young Twenties And that apprenticeship is sort of my safety harness but I hope one day I am able to express my dreams in ways like you did!

I have developed a fear of driving that has evolved since 2020 into agoraphobia. I have also benefited from CBT.
Thanks for sharing your story. Something very similar happened to me when rock climbing and again on the ski slope. Haven't gone back to either since.

This is weird but one of the things you said that stuck out to me was that you had to pee, and that could've partially been why your anxiety had gotten worse. This is so true and happens to me, I've just never heard someone else say it
