  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk and the 2015 Jeep Wrangler are two very off-road worthy vehicles but which one of these is better off-road in the ice and snow? Andre and Roman recently had the chance to find out when they compared 2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk versus 2015 Jeep Wrangler in the Canadian ice and snow.

    simple:
    Do you need a car to get to the gates of hell and do donuts on Satan's front lawn? Get the wrangler
    Do you need a car to go camping on the weekend and drive a 40mile commute the rest of the week? get the renegade.

    First half of the video "The renegade is a great car, I really think Jeep outdid their selves as it can handle off road no problem".
    Second half "The renegade will get you to the cabin but wont get you up the mountain."
    Bottom line they are both off-road capable but obviously if you want more off-road go with the wrangler, the cons is you will be sacrificing MPG and price.
    I have a renegade trailhawk in Colorado and love it, great for skiing trips.

      Renegade will climb a snow covered hill, just use snow/winter/mud tires. All season street tires blow in heavy snow. Years ago I had a chevy celebrity fwd, put mud/snow tires on it and it was like a mule in 14 inch snow storm and mud. Crazy how good tires changes the game.

    • @jeffb8562

      @@ericj810 Disagree. I had a 99 Saturn LS. I thought it was the best handling vehicle on the snow covered road. And yes that was after I put snow tires on it. I bought a new Jeep renegade in 2019. There are a few things with it that I am not excited about. Cargo space, the transmission and comfort. There is one thing that I am extremely happy about, and that is how it handles in the snow. Even before I put decent tires on it, the renegade is the best handling vehicle in snow that I have ever driven.

      +javan olson 10/4... I bought mine in the Chicago market.. What I did was comb the auto trader app and the car guru app. I found a bunch of prices i like and started calling the dealerships. I quickly found that almost every one of the dealerships no longer had the car lol. I then figured it was all bull ... Just the dealerships getting you to come in and slap the real price at you. I did find a Jeep dealership in the area that had the car at the price I wanted. I went , test drove, and then had to play the game with these guys. They argued that the "internet price" had a safety package of 2500.00 that is added to all prices.. Lol SCAM! I told these clowns that I didn't want the "safety package" so take it off.. Of course they said all their vehicles have it and cant be taken off ... So... I said you either sell it to me for the price agreed over the phone or we walk. In the end they caved and agreed to the price.

    This video is pointless, of course the wrangler is better off road what a stupid comparison to make, the point of the renegade is that its a small SUV with genuine off road capabilities for Europe where the roads are much more narrow, fuel is much more expensive, and parts for American cars cost a fortune, that's why the renegade is fiat based to make the parts more affordable. so for everyone calling it garbage and saying just buy a wrangler perhaps do some research about the vehicles purpose and demographic before righting it off.

    Looked to me like either one can do what most people will need them to! A person can probably take them just about anywhere that don't require hardcore offroading. The Wrangler seemed better off road but the other seemed like it could get it done in most cases and probably be more comfortable on pavement. Personally I think if someone wants to go deeper into the wild than what these will take you they need to consider a horse.

      I'm ready to purchase the Renegade Trail Hawk also. What TFL does not talk about enough in the video is that the Renegade drives really well as a everyday driver on road, in a city, tight parking, etc... and it does all well and feels great on the road while still giving me decent off-road capability versus the 4 door Wrangler which is not a great everyday driver when it comes to most on-road driving. It's not unmanageable, but it certainly lacks way behind the Renegade in that respect. If I had the money for 2 vehicles I would totally drop the Renegade and have a Wrangler and something else for highway/city driving. But for a 1 vehicle budget and spending 90% of my time on-road and in snow the Renegade is much better for me.

      How would Fiat ruin it? I want a Wrangler Rubi, like nobody's business.
      But what do you think corporate owner Fiat could do to ruin it?
      They'e put the most powerful engine in it the PS V6 with VVT, so it gives you 285 hp with 260 torque. Mine would have a standard 6 speed.
      For those automatic weenies, it means pushing the clutch pedal down, every time you want to shift.
      How can you knock that? Especially compared to what this video shows.

    With better tires, lift for ground clearance and momentum the renegade works just fine. However, having owned both, I would say if you plan on Rock climbing and playing in deep mud puddles the Wrangler is the best bet, as you can lift it higher and put bigger mud tires on it. As if we all didn't know that already! lol

    That renegade looked like a posing toy that was right at the edge of it's limits even on that little track. The wrangler had loads left in it. I'm not a great jeep fan but respect where it's due - the wrangler seems decent. That renegade is like all the other pretend offroaders. Just something to take kids to school. When your "diffs" are just electronics controlling the brakes there are going to be limits to the ability. Real diffs, good ariculation and low down grunt/gearing - as the wrangler - are some of the key offroad attributes.

    • @hyperlogos
      @hyperlogos 9 лет назад +2

      The best though is when you combine the two approaches. Sometimes you unlock a diff and use the brakes, sometimes you lock them, depdending on conditions. Something Land Rover has really been doing well with recently, but it's not like they're alone.

      @veemacks7255 9 лет назад +5

      Now it's clear why American cars/trucks are made with such low quality materials, because people think $30k is a lot for a new vehicle. It's like they've decided a price that's fair for something and will stick with it all their life, not allowing for inflation over the years. There's a reason LR's are more expensive, it's because the rest of the world is willing to pay for better engineering and better material quality. You get what you pay for. Demand dirt cheap prices and look at what you'll get.
      None of that is directed at the Renegade, just American cars in general and the American buyers forcing the makers to lower the quality and engineering. When I saw/heard the price $30k I personally thought "wow, that's cheap".

    • @vertik7
      @vertik7 9 лет назад

      Alien Or Sutin American cars/trucks are forced to compete with Japanese cars. Japanese cars/trucks have usually lower price and higher quality. How USA government made this is unknown to me. Governments usually protect business owners from other countries, but not USA. Probably after WW2 USA doesn't charge Japan for importing their cars or something.
      In many other countries if the car is not domestic it has twice the price or more. This is why Chrysler and Chevrolet went bankrupt because of imported cars that are cheaper! and better for the same price. Ford didn't go bankrupt because most of the cars they sell at other countries and don't expect lots of sells in US (except F-150). Ford Fusion doesn't even want to compete with Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, It can't be compared for the price mostly and fuel economy too.

    Nothing beats the patriot in the cuv segment. It looked like a jeep and it drove like one too. Even the compass was better than this one. The front of the renegade is rather acceptable. Its the backend that completely gives away the fiat 500 platform which is a shame really. 30k for a car that is likely to get discontinued in 5 6 years (considering patriot/compas) totally not worth it. Id rather get a 2012 grand cherokee for 22 000 and save 8000

    People seem to have a tremendous problem with realizing that car companies need to make money. They still have the Wrangler, which is what you buy if you want a pure off road vehicle. The new Cherokee, Compass and now the Renegade are aiming for a different market. This Renegade would be a great commuter for a cold, snowy environment and offers a smoother ride for when the pavement is dry. It is also something Jeep wanted to bust into the European market, which the Renegade is perfect for.

    The more I watch vids of the Renegade the more it kinda grows on me. Dont get me wrong, I would never get rid of my JK for it but I think it does extremely well given what it really is. If I was in the market for a small/mid size city car I would seriously consider the Renegade... The only real problem with it IMO is its price point. A full load Trailhawk should not cost over $30,000...

    • @KnightShadey
      @KnightShadey 9 лет назад

      Welll, yeah it should considering everything that they have to add to it as a low-volume option. However it's harder to justify that $30K versus a much more appealing, IMO, Willys Wheeler Edition for about the same or less.
      But it's based on cost, and it's cheaper to make the Willys, just like it's much more Expensive to make the Rubicon X they were driving in that video versus the Renegade or Willys..
      I could never see myself owning a Renegade, I'll always be a Wrangler + other kind of person (currently GC + X-Trail), but I'd be interested in getting it as a rental when flying into some of my favourite ski resorts if it saves me a bit of coin over a Cherokee/Escape or a bunch of coin over a Grand Cherokee / Explorer / etc.

      +Daniel Iannantuoni I bit the bullet and I got a Latitude, since I needed something to commute from my house in the suburbs to a city during rush hour. The Renegade gets great mileage and I'm pretty certain it can handle the steep driveway and mountain roads even with snow on them, which is basically all I need it for. I debated between it and the Patriot and the new Cherokee, and I hated the way the new Cherokee looked(my previous car was a 2000 Jeep Cherokee a GDL driver wrecked) and the Patriot was too big for what I needed, and I don't regret my decision at all. It's a practical daily driver with a great interior. It probably "sucks" off road compared to the wrangler, but honestly... that's not what I bought it for.

    I just came back from Islington Chrysler Etobicoke Ontario ,they asked me to pay over $36,000 for Trailhawk version !!! They had some Chrysler people doing some promo ,so I asked question are you serious?
    They told me yes! Whey I compared other brands to Jeep their answer was its me model and they need to cover the cost of new design!
    All wheel drive Subaru Forester cost 31,000 with tax this Jeep would be over $40,000 on the road.
    Any buyers?

    1. did they air down the tires at all?
    2. didn't they say that the wrangler had the rear lockers engaged? of course it did awesome with lockers!
    I own a jeep wrangler unlimited. It will go anywhere I point it at. But times have changed for me. I am down sizing. Want better fuel economy want 4 doors and trunk space. I think the renegade is going to be the choice for me. Even though I know it's going to be hard to make that huge shift to something so less capable. And I would have liked to see him try harder to make the hill on the first try. with the automated system it will brake the tire that is spinning to send power to the opposite wheel. So I think he should have committed to the hill and tried harder and let the vehicle do it's thing. I think it may have done it. gas, no gas, gas, no gas, I think he was confusing the computer.

    First you said it was designed for the Landover, then you said it was designed for the renegade so which was it designed for. If it's for the Landover at the very minimum the trail hawk took down Landover for half the price. Now that it's been years since this review we now know with some modifications the renegade can take on almost anything a two door wrangler can. Also modification in the renegade is far less expensive than in the wrangler. I love both vehicles but the renegade is very impressive for what it is.

    There is a lot to be said for axel articulation, plus tyres .. plus proper 4wheel drive .. and obviously with more articulation comes more ground clearance.. the wrangler was built for more off Rd than on ability, the renegade.. a balance of both ... and refinement .. look at it from another perspective.. the renegade is a very capable 4x4 ..for how its produced ... to pitch it against the definitive off roader.. it does an excellent job of it .. and I disagree with what you say .. because it can and has gone up many mountains.. in the next generations it can get even better.. , but even now you can lift it .. widen the track and everything else .. but soon the manufacturer will do all that and then the renegade will achieve world dominance and rule the world !! Oops .. got carried away,! .. I love mine its allot better than the subaru forester I had.

    The Wrangler has demonstrated more suspension articulation than the Renegade. So none of the wheels ever leave the ground also from what I see from your trail driving.

  • @fmonk
    @fmonk 9 лет назад

    As expected, the Wrangler (as outfitted) is more capable. But, you'd probably have more fun in the Renegade because it's more challenging.

    • @Corvettes1996
      @Corvettes1996 9 лет назад

      As much as having fun is awesome. This isn't really a challenging course. I've got a 2000 tj that could blaze this no problem. That "renegade" wouldn't perform on the trails I use to wheel on. It would get to the trail start and have to go home. Independent suspension is terrible for an off road scenario as seen when the tires come off the ground going through those gullies. True jeep solid axle like the wrangler shows that all 4 tires stay planted. And yes I know at one point the wranglers one tire come off the ground

    • @fmonk
      @fmonk 9 лет назад

      No shit, Sherlock. The course was specifically built by Jeep for demo purposes. They would never set up a demo course that would cause their products fail. Renegade was never designed ore built for hard-core off-roaders. Furthermore, most people who buy any Jeep model will never ever do any real off-roading. Majority of the time is spent getting groceries and driving kids to soccer practice.

    Sadly the brake torque 4wd in the renegade leaves a lot to be desired on low traction surfaces. The electronic lsd in the grand Cherokee scaled down would have been world's better but would have increased the cost. Not bad when compared to a Honda awd system but even the ford explorer awd would probably beat out the renegade trailhawk and that's kind of sad. Diff locks matter. The wrangler had the rear axle locked and walked up it fine.

    I like this renegade but it's far too expensive. A top of the line trailhawk (which is the only model i'd take off road) looked like it was struggling to make it up that hill. My base forester could make easy work of that. Yes I know the subaru system is one of the best for hills but I would expect a top of the line trailhawk to be a little more capable than that. If the top trim struggles there is no hope for it in my mind. I'm slightly disappointed as I was hoping for more.

      So far they said its keep solid axle. Unibody isn't a huge deal, the XJ's did fine unibody and todays tech they are much stiffer. Aluminum for lighter weight is good. Small engines are fine if its gear right... the old 4 bangers with 4:10s would go anywhere the 6 would, just a bit slower. And they are adding a diesel which wrangler owners have wanted for a long time. So its not over yet.

    • @RedneckGarage
