Robert L. Marshall wrote a wonderful essay about the two autograph copies of BWV 906. Why did Bach use a treble clef in one copy and a soprano clef in the other? Why did Bach title one copy and left the other without title? Why did Bach abandon such a bold chromatic fugue? This video, for the most part, distracts my curiosity for Bach's intentions of BWV 906 for there is beauty in both the performance and the performer.
+Massimo Manghi I just went to Amazon.com and saw that the book that has this essay is being sold for 40 cents!! (hardcover!! )Here is the title: "The Music of Johann Sebastian Bach: The Sources, the Style, the Significance" by Robert L. Marshall. And here is the seller: Organ Trail Book Company. Another seller called Yankee Clipper Books is selling it for 41 cents! Good prices! Good hunting!
gerubach I'll tell u exactly what has happened to Bach's intentions of why he may have most likely stopped. He was experimenting from within his own composition & kept on writing along with his Fugue in mind. His experimentation was the reason why he had wrote in in a soprano clef. And he didn't give a title to it, because it was meant for his experimental purposes. He intended to leave it unfinished, because he did not try to consider this as an actual composition, but rather it just came to him during his compositional writing that the second part, the Fugue kinda gave him newer ideas of music in a sense, for this reason he didn't completely stop, but just went along with still continuing writing out this Fugue. He did not look very seriously at this Fugue, he can do much better in his opinion, however it does sound splendid to us, because we aren't genius' like him. But it's his choice which matters not ours. This experimentation could've even bored him, because he feels he can do so much better, but he's not on purpose. Just because he wants to devote his time with this experimentation, in his mind, he was trying to sketch the idea of going beyond.. he was feeling an advancement towards his musical talents! This could've most likely been the very successful result of the Musical Offering! Basically he kinda saw the future of his music! This was the main reason of his experimentation! By looking more beyond his own music, because he feels like he can make something very revolutionary interesting & beyond at the same time! Of which he did! I don't know what exactly before the Musical Offering! But I think that it's the Musical Offering for sure! As well as the very finely done Art of the Fugue!! He basically has reached the end of his own art! He had reached the end of the complete beauty of Baroque art! There was nothing more left for him to accomplish on this earth, so God had chose to take him at the right moment in time, before the Classical era had started!! I also believe the same happens to Mozart & to Beethoven as well!! God chooses their destiny after what they had done what they were completely capable of doing at the max of their own art before they'd left the earth!
MarmeladeLP No problem, I always intend to help others with as much as I assume to dig into facts of life's most probable expectations to unaware situations! Especially as a so much important person as Bach himself for the world!!! I Love Him with my whole heart & soul!
Some cembalists play virtuously, but mechanically. You do play with perfect virtuosity but with your own great interpretation. You really are a master , Chiara!
Once again, in the busy-ness of the day, I come to this performance to experience tranquility and beauty. I can’t help but think about all the joy the artist provides, every day, to people she does not know. Thanks!
Cara Chiara, you're one of my all-time favourite harpsichordists. I love the way you bring this music to life. You have an obvious affinity for it, and it comes out in heartfelt and spirited performances. Brava e grazie!
Some fascinating aspects to this piece. The hand crossings, for one thing. Also, although Bach was no stranger to chromaticism, I feel this is a more radical departure. The work of a composer at his height. Beautifully rendered as always by Chiara Massini.
Beautiful, Chiara. Your use of registration and Bach's use of chromaticism team for a wonderful listening experience. Thank you once again for sharing your extraordinary talent. Gregory
"Quod erat in votis" mi viene da dire... Attesa pienamente ripagata per una Fantasia piena di slancio drammatico e una Fuga "scavata" all'interno di un cromatismo esasperato, interrotta con discrezione e attonita gestualità. Presto sul mio G+. Complimenti vivissimi.
So glad you stopped there like that, with your characteristic smile, giving me an opportunity to imagine a completion for it. Only about another 16 measures :) (I write lots of fugues-no I won’t write it down, but it’s essentially a trio sonata texture, with a pedal coming in...) Lovely playing with your sculptor hands! Thank you.
The unfinishedness of this piece is particularly striking in this performance. I am completely compassionate with the performer in her dramatic distrubedness and unease she leaves the keyboard with.
Beautiful woman plays beautiful Bach on a beautiful harpsichord Beautiful performance and gorgeous quality sound its a shame Bach didn't complete the fantasia und fuga, perhaps you could write your own conclusion? You seem more than upto that. Brilliant video thankyou for posting and I look out for more performances All the best Alan
(2 years later, oop) I think what you're describing is really just the difference between pianists who rely on liberal use of the sustain pedal versus those who apply it only when actually necessary. You can hear it in someone's playing, how heavy they are with the sustain or how much they focus on the feel of the notes in their fingers. But I agree that not all pianists do appreciate this deeply.
Maravilloso!!!
Fantastic playing, in all videos of yours I have watched Today, when I found your chancel. Everything perfect, and they arent exactly easy pieces to play. :) Some are very complicated, actually. And the sound, the timbre of your Cembalo is amazing. Thank you for sharing with us.
if the purpose of this is to get clicks and hits, why not dress up and perform in a candle-it setting. These videos are an amazing evening entertainment and the Performer is outstanding. Thank you Chiara, fantastic performance again.
Wanda moderna, adorata dai tuoi Fans! Marco Rotondi
Well-played here, and at a good tempo! As a general rule, the ladies tend to maintain Bach's original tempo in works such as Fantasia, whereas the gents tend to alter it, often to an extreme high degree. (Of course there are exceptions to this rule.)
Absolutely brilliant performance and J.S. Bach
The ornaments are so beautifully clear and precise. Wonderful playing.

Che mistero il finale . Da qui tutto si rinnova . Grazie from Italia .
GREAT dear Chiara !!!!!!!. Kind regards, Harry Völker from the Netherlands.

Brava Chiara ! Stupenda interpretazione, colorita e vivace.
It is wonderful to watch your hands play this technically difficult fugue; and listen to this perfect music... Grazie, Chiara !!!

Great interpretation and articulation: The polyphony really comes out like this!
Good job!

I think Bach was a flying Bachroque Supercomputer!

A really gorgeous performance,... and thanks so much for including the Fugue.
The unfinishedness of this piece is particularly striking in this performance. I am completely compassionate with the performer in her dramatic distrubedness and unease she leaves the keyboard with.
Ti amo. Non è "suoni bene" oppure "sei brava". È "il mio cuore è già tuo" :)
Grazie per tua musica

I don't think acoustic pianists really appreciate how challenging it is to play this with jumps that don't sound cut off, without a sustaining pedal.

Bellissimo Chiara!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful playing! :D

Marvelous virtuoso playing. And, Bach: Always, Bach. The Overarching Universality of All Musical Ideas past, present and future - in his work.
